Kind of an interesting read about Nielsen Ratings. Still, even if I don't actually have a vote, we need to foster an atmosphere where we all 'feel' like we're contributing to it, otherwise the overriding pessimism would just cause a Firefly Effect.

I have heard maaaany conflicting things about how Nielsen ratings actually work.

Plus, it's been demonstrated before that [as] don't really care about ratings. Do you honestly think the crap original programming they show are huge ratings draws? Even ATHF isn't really that popular. Weird, cult stuff like Tim And Eric even less so.

Wack'd: I'll sort it when I get some time to do so, then.

For those wondering about the transition from TOM 4 back to TOM 3, from DeMarco's Twitter:

"no plan right now, but if we can get some $$ or a sponsor we will tell that story."

Also just noticed this question/answer which comes as something of a relief to me (some people were saying we'd need like double AS's normal ratings constantly for months or Toonami is dead again).

If the ratings don't do well the first week...should we panic? Ideally, how High will you NEED them?

There's not a hard and fast rule. As long as they don't get LOWER than they were before, we're okay.

GRW was upsetting. Well it was cool, but raping NGE with it's editing was PAINFUL.

[up][up][up]Methinks you're suffering from Fan Myopia; a lot of Animu fans seem to. I actually like a lot of their Stoner, Absurdist comedy stuff, and do dig their 'weird unsettling Public Access' tone. It's having a diverse marketplace of shows; if having high ratings was all they carried about, [as] would be nothing but Fox Animation reruns because those consistently blow all the original programming out of the water.

I honestly really can't stand how a lot of anime fans not just don't like [as]'s original shit (which is an alright thing to have an opinion about), but think that their opinion is the majority and that there's some conspiracy at William Street to screw them over. That's the kinda entitlement that William Street has rightfully made fun of in the past. Obviously people are watching these shows or else they wouldn't air them. It's not that hard to figure out.

...

Anywho, hearing some preliminary rumors that all the Animu premieres ranked Number One in their age demo. I... don't exactly know what that entails but we should be seeing numbers soon.

[up]Would loooooove them to air Rebuild of Evangelion now though.

Oh don't get me wrong, I like a lot of their original stuff too (especially ATHF and Ozmo) but it's not exactly the most popular shows on television.

And no, I do think a lot of people complain for no reason (that said, I think [as] mocking the anime fandom probably does not help their case there).

Eamil: That is indeed a relief to hear. I can't imagine the ratings getting lower, to be honest.

[up]Well of course, but to be fair, neither is Anime.

And eh, they make fun of a lot people too. It's just something you kind of have to have thicker skin about since I know they don't really hate their anime viewers. But really a lot of fans go waaaaay overboard with the persecution complex; there was a completely unsubstantiated rumor on the Big O Main Page (in the main article in fact) about Tim and Eric threatening to leave if Season 3 were okayed, but since there was no citation and it itself said there was no proof, is all rang of bitter 'Stabbed in the Back' theorizing.

^^I never said it was, I'm just saying I don't think that ratings are as big a deal as a lot of people seem to be making them out to be, is all.

Also that news should be shared on [as]' Toonami board if it hasn't been already.

As for Tim & Eric, I really dislike their work, but I doubt they're the total animu-hating douchebags that some like to make them out to be.

Furthermore, [as] has little to do with whether or not a third season of The Big O would ever be okay'd.

^Cool! grin

[up][up]Well, we're talking about like seeing the block get more money and such.

I reeeeally would like to see a repeat performance for those ratings for the next several weeks, but I have to wonder; how many of the viewers who turned in last week were just 'novelty viewers' who will probably taper away over the next several weeks?

[up]Deadman Wonderland, Casshern Sins, and Bleach all scored number one in their cable timselots for the 18-34 Age demo on Basic Cable.

[up][up][up]Wait wait, I was always under the impression that Cartoon Network/[adult swim] had everything to do with the fact that The Big O got a second season. Remember? It didn't do hot in Japan, did great in the U.S., and a few years later we got a second season that, unless I'm misremembering, even mentioned Cartoon Network as a co-producer in the credits?

[up]I think it's that so much time has past that rounding up the talent on the otherside of the pacific would be kind of impossible. Plus 2003 was at the height of the American Anime Boom.

Piccorotto: That was true at the time, nowadays I doubt [as] has even the least bit of say over whether or not O'd get a third season.

As for novelty viewers, I'm sure a lot of them were. But! I'm also sure that many weren't, and it's those that we need to hang on to, you see.
the cat got skinned again!
[up][up][up][up]Correct.

The Great Recession happened between the Anime Boom of 2000 and today. It also NOT coincidentally occurred the same year Toonami was killed off, abite only by two months before that. Anime ain't what it used to be in the US anymore, and because of that, [adult swim] is no longer the saving grace it once was for keeping anime in the public eye.

As previously pointed out, however. If this does well enough it could possibly signal a return to semi-mainstream status for anime in the US.

I like my weird stuff, but I think anime's been a "weaboo-only" thing for entirely too long.

[up]Yeah, that's how I feel too. What Toonami is trying to do is bring back a sort of "Casual Anime Fan" atmosphere, which I really want. I think that's why /a/ in particular turns its nose up at it.

Ir's kinda why I think PSG would work for the block, cause it's weird in a sorta 'American weird' way that would jive with viewers.

That feel when you find out that Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins are both on Youtube so you can catch up on the stuff you missed.

Ugh, me too man.

I love anime but quite a few anime fans kind of annoy me.

quick question: is there anyone here that thinks Tim & Eric should continue their run? They had a big movie in theaters and even that bombed like it did with Adult Swim viewers. AS can't honestly believe that it had a small pocket of fans. Call it opinion Myopia or Fan Myopia but dudes let me put it this way: If I had to choose against the King of the Hill (a show whose presence in AS was questionable with me for a time) and Tim & Eric I'd pick King of the hill.

[up]The Tim and Eric Show ended, I think. Also I actually really got into King of the Hill by watching it on AS.

[up]Yeah, true.

I don't care for Tim & Eric's work, so I could care less what happens to them.

This isn't the thread for them, though.

I have to wonder, how many weeks do you think they'll have to post these numbers before we see things really take off? I'm thinking like between 4-6.
