Is Eva 3.33's English dub even finished yet?
Egh, that stinks of Kojima having a more hands on role with MGS 2's script, and look what that got us. The Woolseyisms in Eva 3 were awesome imo: "He's not an idiot, he's an asshole."
These are the words that shall come from my mouth. I shall be known for speaking them. How much of a mess is it? Amazon has had 3.33 on its site for pre-orders for MONTHS, and that won't even be the final version of the packaging, let alone the content!
As far as I know, Anno and Khara decided to take action and provide stuff for the redub, simply because the movie is entirely new material and territory. Thus there's a lot of stuff in it that isn't given a lot of explanation or context which Funi might've missed in the original dub.
Granted this is just speaking off anything I've heard, so how right I am is up for debate.
I'm on Youtube Reviewing Things Cause I can. This would all have been better if they had decided to do all this BEFORE Funimation finished the dub and already rolled out a limited theatrical run for it!
You say that like Metal Gear Solid 2 was badly written. :|
but HOW?Another Month of Movies? Hell yes! I hope this becomes Toonami's holiday tradition!
As for my wishlist, here's what I think should be done...
Assuming they can't sort out Evangelion 33.3 next year (I'd wait until 2015 and air 33.3 for Toonami's 18th birthday), I believe the following films should be top picks...
- First Week: The Castle of Cagliostro
- Second Week: Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society
- Third Week: Any of the Naruto or Bleach Films that are unaired
- Fourth Week: Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Other honorable mentions that would fit the Month of Movies...
- Vampire Hunter D
- Ghost in the Shell (1995 Original)
- One of the Inuyasha movies (If they can get the rights)
- Any of the Sailor Moon or DBZ movies (Again, if they can get the rights)
- Resident Evil: Degeneration or its sequel, Damnation
- Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (Alternately, they could use the SFIV anime as well)
- FMA Brotherhood: Sacred Star of Milos (As much as I hate Brotherhood and love FMA 2003, I still think that given the programming, Sacred Star of Milos would fit. Moreso than Conqueror of Shamballa did, and I liked Shamballa)
Any of the Sailor Moon movies
Viz has not started redubbing the movies yet, and likely won't until they finish at least season 2. As for the Canadian dub, the rights aren't available.
Movie wish list:
- The Iron Giant
- Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
- Ghost in the Shell
- Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
- Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and 2
- Batman Year One

That's why it's just a wish. I know Viz hasn't redubbed the movies yet. But maybe when they do, Toonami could air them.
My wishlist:
Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust
Batman: Under the Red Hood
FMA: Sacred Star of Milos
Streetfighter II The Animated Movie

"I'll show you fear, there is no hell, only darkness." My twittergASP! REDLINE! THAT MUST HAPPEN!
Yeah REDLINE has easily been the most requested movie for Toonami
I'm on Youtube Reviewing Things Cause I can.Personally, I think Castle of Cagliostro would make a great fit for the Month of Movies 2014, and they could use it as a precedent to air any of the Lupin III series, whether it be a re-airing of the Red Jacket series in full form as filler near the end of the block, or a television debut of the Green Jacket series in a similar fashion. Now, from what I understand, The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is too risqué to be aired on television, so that's out. But I'd love to see some Lupin aired on Toonami.
Other ideas would be Street Fighter II's animated movie, as stated before.
Overall, I hope that December will remain as a Month of Movies for Toonami, but I'd like to see more holiday events.
2015 has the 18th Anniversary of Toonami (granted, March 17 is on a Tuesday next year, but they could air a movie event on the Saturday after he 17th as sort of a "18th Birthday"-themed event).
Also, in 2015, Halloween falls on a Saturday. Which means Toonami should probably do something for the holiday. I'd like to see a movie event, preferably a horror anime movie like Vampire Hunter D or its sequel, or as stated before, the Resident Evil CGI movies.
However, the idea of "writing off" shows is somewhat disturbing. Although I'm glad Beware The Batman is gone for good, I'm worried that Adult Swim's higher-ups may do the same to anime programs or worse yet, Toonami in general. At first I thought losing Batman's rights had to do with something on DC's end (much as how losing Star Wars: The Clone Wars had a lot to do with Disney's acquisition of it), but then I realized that Symbionic Titan was also written off, and I have no idea what caused that or whether or not it was even in Cartoon Network's control.
Now, Toonami's revival has been getting rave reviews and good ratings, the budget is slowly but steadily increasing, and the fact they got both Space Dandy when it world-premiered, and managed to acquire Attack On Titan at the very height of its popularity in the West is a good sign. The fact that both Stuart Snyder and CN Real are gone as well are also good signs. Hell, Tim & Eric, who were arguably the biggest benefactors from anime getting screwed by Adult Swim back in the late 2000's, are unfortunately still around, but in a reduced capacity (their shows are in reruns).
But sadly, Tim & Eric are getting a new show in 2015 and when combined with the fates of Beware the Batman and Symbionic Titan, this may not be a good sign. I may be jumping the gun, but I am legitimately worried something bad might happen to Toonami. For now, I will try my best to relax as Symbionic Titan was a dead show, Star Wars: Clone Wars was a dead show and had licensing issues with Disney, while Beware the Batman was both poorly received and had licensing issues with DC anyway. But if they start writing off anime (and by that, I don't mean letting the license expire after they air a full run, I mean Toonami announces that an anime is getting "written off"), then we may have to worry about CN/Adult Swim going back to their old ways...
And before anyone accuses me of being a nutjob for my comments regarding Tim & Eric, I don't believe Tim & Eric were directly involved in the downsizing and under-promotion of anime on Adult Swim in 2008 and 2009, I do believe that they inadvertently benefitted from it because the downsizing of anime and Adult Swim airing on Fridays for the first time essentially opened up a lot of free space, which, if anyone remembers Golden Age and Silver Age Adult Swim (or around 2004-2007), the weekday slots were almost entirely reruns while Saturdays and Sundays aired premieres of anime and comedy respectively. Therefore, with the new weekday slots, Adult Swim greenlit a lot of new comedy shows to fill the gaps (as the Japanese Invasion was winding down at this point). How else could talentless hacks like Tim & Eric get on TV? Seriously, their brand of humor (which was incoherent even by Adult Swim's surrealistic standards) got low to middling ratings despite Adult Swim's over-promotion of it (probably because they thought it was so surreal it would be a ratings smash hit. Remember, this was during the Snyder regime) and celebrity endorsement from both David Cross and John C. Reilly (both of whom are talented actors who I happen to like. They also just happen to be real-life friends of Tim & Eric). Tim & Eric had no hand in anime getting screwed back in the late 2000's and they probably don't know nor care that it happened, but again, they inadvertently benefitted from the downsizing because it gave them the opportunity for their shows and style of humor to be greenlit by Adult Swim.
But with the writing off of Symbiotic Titan (Clone Wars and Batman are understandable given their complicated rights issues), I am getting worried we may enter another Dark Age for Adult Swim. Again, I'm not saying it's gonna happen, just that this could establish precedents for if something bad did happen.
In other words, don't panic. Nothing bad has happened or is going to happen for now, but be on the watch if something does happen. Just be careful.
VHD and Hellsing on Halloween night would be awesome, but unfortunately the most we'll actually get would just be a premiere of the latter (which still isn't that bad).
Regarding your T&E comments, while it may signal another Dork Age for AS comedies, I'm sure Toonami will be fine since [as] adores it and all. And if Rick And Morty is any indication, then it may not be as dark an age of ASC as you think.
"I'll show you fear, there is no hell, only darkness." My twitterMy understanding (pieced together from what I remember the tumblr saying about the matter) is that a show being "written off" means the company that created it is basically declaring it a financial loss and getting some kind of tax credit in exchange for never attempting to use/profit from it in the future. That's probably an oversimplification, because they've said on tumblr that the details are too complicated to really get into, but that's what they've made it sound like to me. In this case it was probably Warner Bros. Animation since they produced the show and they have the same parent company as Cartoon Network.
Assuming my understanding is right, they literally can't "write off" the anime being aired, because they don't own it. The other examples we have of shows that were written off are Symbionic Titan, Megas XLR, and IGPX - all Cartoon Network original productions. And I imagine it would be hard to write off Toonami as a financial loss given everyone who works on it isn't being paid.
Very late edit: I just noticed you mentioned Clone Wars, missed that before. As far as I know that's not being written off - it was produced by Lucasfilm, not Cartoon Network directly.
