Namespace Migration Project Statistics:

Seeking for Light
[up] That's actually a bad idea. A very bad idea. First of all, redirects don't count inbounds on their own page; all inbounds get counted on the page that they redirect to, so it's impossible to see how many inbounds a redirect actually has.

Second, many of those redirects are either the names of the various parts of the work (for series which are on a single page) or redirects from other namespaces which reflect media the work has been adapted into. It is far, far better to have someone use a "wrong" namespace (say, Anime.Bleach) than for them to give up using namespaces because they can't remember (or don't know) which namespace the work page is in and thus get redlinks which they try to link with a namespace.

World's Toughest Milkman
In the case of literature series, deleting the namespaced redirects is a very bad idea, as many people may be more familiar with the names of the individual works in the series than the (often arbitrary) name we've chosen for the series. For example, John Varley's Literature.Eight Worlds series is what The Other Wiki calls it, but I'd never heard that term used, and the books themselves are only loosely connected, so it makes perfect sense to have redirects at Literature. The Ophiuchi Hotline, Literature.Steel Beach and Literature. The Golden Globe. Furthermore, many tropes are specific to individual books in the series, so it makes sense to use the redirects in examples. That way, if someone decides to make a separate page for one of the books, they don't have to go hunt down and correct all the wicks.

Sweeto!
I've never mentionned redirects concerning works adapted in different media but which doesn't have a specific page yet. Of course I won't touch those; the redirect might be transformed into an actual article sooner or later.

I'm talking about redirects using a namespace that is plain WRONG. Like Series/ or Film/ for a WesternAnimation/ (or Anime/ or Disney/) work (there was plenty of them). Those are really worthless. If someone take the time to put a namespaced link, they should at least check that it lead directly to the the correct page. Removing those redirects discourage their use.

Thing is, lots of people are going to put Film.Brave because WesternAnimation.Brave is longer and Brave is in fact a film. I reckon it's better for them to use an arguably wrong namespace than none at all.

And I reckon it is better to have none at all, because then it will be a red link and thus DISCOURAGING people from using a wrong namespace redirect and correct it to the right one.

See the difference in perspective?
Seeking for Light
[up] But that is likely to lead people to abandoning using namespaces altogether, which is precisely the opposite of what we want.

No, that is encouraging people to use the CORRECT namespace in a link instead of an obsolete one. I don't see what's so hard to understand about it.

The whole Wick Namespace Migration effort is about having every link being direct toward the correct article. Redirects using an incorrect namespace are still redirects and need to be corrected (and take just as much work) as any other redirect. Deleting those having no more wicks and no inbounds avoid those redirects to be used any more and croping more wicks in the future. (It also have the minor side-effect of discouraging anybody to move back the article on the wrong namespace, as unlikely as it sounds, since a deleted page is automatically locked too). Overall, only pros.
Seeking for Light
You're missing that fact that while we understand what the "correct" namespace is, those who are not involved in the cleanup aren't going to have as good of an idea. And people generally take the path of least resistance. If they consider, say, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to be a film—which is not inaccurate, as it is one—and know that they are supposed to use a namespace, they, logically for them, put it under Film.Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs. They go to save the page—but what's that? It's a redlink! At this point, they either try to figure out where it goes, likely through trial and error, or they give up. And even if they do go the former route (which is less likely to begin with), if they run out of ideas of where we might have put it (WesternAnimation.Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs? No, that's not the right one. Well, where else could it be?), they'll probably give up anyway. And when they give up, they delete the namespace and leave the wick to Main/. And then the next time they're adding an example, they're less likely to even try to use a namespace, because the last time it was just wasted effort.

So yes, it is much better to have people linking to the "wrong" namespace than to make it more difficult for them to use namespaces at all in the hopes that it will encourage the use of the primary namespace.

You're basically encouraging laziness. I'm not. This is completed migrations we're talking about. A wrong namespace would have to be corrected anyway, just as would a red link. And finding the correct link isn't that hard. I rest my case.
Terradorablyfying
Using a namespace takes more effort than not using one; I fail to see how promoting namespaced redirects is a bad thing or encouraging laziness, and it may help them to use namespaces more in the future.

Update time!

According to the Page Type Counts, there are 34, 892 work pages.

And here are the article counts for namespaces, from top to bottom:
  • Film/ - 4535
  • VideoGame/ - 4410
  • Literature/ - 3074
  • Fanfic/ - 2160
  • Music/ - 1902
  • Webcomic/ - 1759
  • Series/ - 1654
  • Manga/ - 1494
  • WesternAnimation/ - 1444
  • Anime/ - 1141
  • ComicBook/ - 622
  • Roleplay/ - 582
  • Theatre/ - 403
  • TabletopGame/ - 378
  • WebVideo - 360
  • VisualNovel/ - 209
  • Franchise/ - 199
  • WebAnimation/ - 174
  • ComicStrip/ - 170
  • LightNovel/ - 162
  • Wrestling/ - 144
  • Radio/ - 116
  • LetsPlay/ - 115
  • Blog/ - 96

  • Advertising/ - 18
  • Manhua/ - 11
  • Script/ - 11
  • Wiki/ - 11
  • H2G2/ - 6

All this constituting 27961/34892 (80.1%, although the fact that some of the namespaced pages can be redirects, factoring exactly what percentage of work pages actually are namespaced can be tricky; also, some of the namespaced "works" can apply to creator pages)

For non-works:
  • Creator: 1217/4527 (26.9%, an understatement considering this doesn't include Music/, Wrestling/ or LetsPlay/)
  • Useful Notes: 680/1562 (43.5%)
  • Administrivia: 86/356 (24.2%)

Overall: For non-works: 29944/41337 (72.4%)

I think we're getting close. I feel that once we reach 85% of all work being namespaced, we should let all tropers know about namespacing and encourage them to use them from now on.

Thought I'd give this a try, since it hasn't been updated in a while.

36, 633 pages with pagetype "work"

Migrated:

31, 640/36, 633 = 86.37% for work pages

1, 820/4, 845 = 37% for creator pages

734/1, 606 = 45% for useful notes

Hoo boy... it's been a while hasn't it? Anyways:

38476 works with the page title "work", and (still not accounting for redirect overlap):
  • Film/ - 5885
  • VideoGame/ - 5461
  • Literature/ - 5108
  • Fanfic/ - 2662
  • Series/ - 2256
  • Music/ - 2221
  • Webcomic/ - 1961
  • WesternAnimation - 1649
  • Manga/ - 1606
  • Anime/ - 1222
  • ComicBook/ - 870
  • Roleplay/ - 666
  • WebVideo/ - 502
  • Theatre/ - 480
  • TabletopGame/ - 416
  • Franchise/ - 251
  • Wrestling/ - 240
  • VisualNovel - 232
  • WebAnimation - 202
  • Website - 186
  • LightNovel/ - 182
  • ComicStrip/ - 181
  • LetsPlay/ - 147
  • Radio - 124
  • Blog/ - 108
  • Disney/ - 90
  • Animation/ - 84
  • Podcast - 80
  • Machinima/ - 76
  • Bollywood/ - 65
  • Manhwa/ - 58
  • Magazine/ - 52
  • Discworld/ - 43
  • MagicTheGathering/ - 27
  • Advertising/ - 20
  • Wiki/ - 16
  • AudioPlay/ - 15
  • Manhwa/ - 11

Which is 35455/38476 (92.1%; although once again, results may not add up given that some of these namespaced pages are redirects or designated for creator pages)

Creator: 2549/5323 (47.9%)
Useful Notes: 802/1641 (48.9%)
Administrivia: 107/360 (29.7%)\

How so? Fanfiction and webcomics are quite a new phenomenon. Literature has been around for millennia.
