Cameos:

The time is now,
Anyone else put characters from one work in as 'extra' in another? Not reference, just a short description that readers can pick up on.

I draw comics. So I sometimes use character designs, for fun. Especially my time traveler, because it amuses me. Also the one time I drew a video camera room, and it was pretty much a bunch of inside jokes and references.

...I can't do that anymore, since it's pretty much become less cameo, and more of intertwining stories that are slowly becoming more and more related.

I've just put a couple of lines into the current WIP that references an incident in the next one: A woman knocking a jug of milk on the other side of the cafe over breaks the tension. In the other work we see why she does it, with WIP main characters being background, but they will be commented on: think the scene in Marcellus' bar in Pulp Fiction.

Due to all three of my main works taking place in the same universe in a way, its sort of inevitable that Look-a-likes appear. (its complicated. Time travel, alternate universes and extra dimensional space are involved)

Johnson shows up in New Dawn as a delinquent, Nathan as a young FBI agent, etc.

[up][up] I do that too! :D Are there any instances that you're particularly fond of?
Theres sex and death and human grime in monochrome for one thin dime and at least the trains all run on time but they dont go anywhere.

Actually that's the first time I've done it - previous characters have all inhabited different worlds (SF, Fantasy, Historical), though I'm going to put the SF pair in the next work, which although 21st Century is masquerade/Techno-mage.

Oddly these two stories are not the same 'verse - current WIP is a serious romance/finding yourself, where, as mentioned, the next is Techno-magic.

Gabe sat upright, making himself taller, tilting his head back slightly, looking as if he was about to bite back. He took a sharp intake of breath, but held it. Lucy tensed, ready to shout at him for whatever he was about to say. She could feel the tension between the three of them. She knew this was the point they split.

Suddenly there was a crash from the couple in the far corner, the woman appeared to have swatted the milk jug across the room. The unexpected noise broke the moment as Gabe let out his breath in a rush, the tension leaving him.

He turned his head down and to his left, and closed his eyes. “Compromise?” he said, finally looking at her.

... Rob glanced to either side to ensure no one was close, then said in a low voice "I'm a magician."

Dee looked confused. "What, like David Blaine and David Copperfield? What's so bad about that."

Rob grimaced. "No, actually, more like Gandalf and Dumbledore."

"Very funny, " Dee said, "if you are just going to to muck about I will tell you to bugger off. Now seriously, what the hell is going on?"

Rob's eyes became unfocused, and he held his right hand ten centimetres or so above the table, moving it slightly. The milk jug floated across the space between them, and as Rob tilted his hand slightly, the jug followed suit, pouring the milk into Dee's cup. Dee looked at Rob. His eyes were focused back on her now, and he gave her a grin, but she could see he was still concentrating to a degree. She looked at the milk jug and frowned. There were no obvious wires. She waved a hand underneath the jug, then above it. Nothing.

"Okay, what's the trick?"

Rob's grin became wider. "No trick, just what is usually refered to as magic."

Tentatively Dee reached for the jug. Rob raised his hand by a couple of centimeters, and the jug rose above her grip. He looked around, making sure no one was watching, and then moved the jug around in the air as Dee tried to catch it. Her hand darted forward and caught the jug with a slap, causing it to tumble across the cafe.

"Clumsy, " said Rob, "you'd better apologise to the owner. Oww."

"What's the matter?"

"The guy over there, in the grey waistcoat, massive spike of emotional energy, " Rob managed, holding his head.

"Does this happen a lot?"

"Occassionally. He's probably got latent abilities, but never been identified." Rob blinked in rabid succession. "It was like being punched on the nose, but in your brain. I guess there is some sort of argument going on, look, " They watched as one of the women stood and strode off to the toilets. "I think he was about to say something, but calmed down - all that stress had to go somewhere - and I acted like a lightening rod."

The Eternal Fool
I mainly work with game plots, so I made a few characters cameo as joke bosses towards the end of the story of my current project.

I do this, but I turn it Up to Eleven by going full-on Canon Welding. One of my characters is slated to appear in all six of my book series, and a couple of my stand-alone works as well (basically, anything that takes place in "our" universe he's around for via Reincarnation... no matter how many times he dies, he keeps coming back). Of course, his cameos are harder to spot due to the reincarnation thing... he looks different every time, and has even come back as a woman on a couple of occasions.
