Rough Concept for a Fallout Fusion Fic (Need Help):

Otaku Cowboy
I had a rough idea for a Fallout New Vegas fic that is both a Fusion Fic (Chun-Li as the Courier, still in-character in terms of personality, but retrofitted to fit a Fallout context) and a semi-AU Fic.

The biggest difference is that Caesar's Legion is no longer the villain, they treat their women much better, and the NCR are the bad guys, made to resemble modern America much better, that is, a corrupt state rife with Corporatism and Christian Fundamentalism, fallen from it's glory and egalitarian foundation, while Caesar's Legion is a coalition of both Neo-Pagan and Atheist tribes united against the socially conservative and Judeo-Christian Church Militant NCR. (Yes, I'm fully aware this is an Author Tract, but I want to do it right! Tropes Are Not Bad, after all.) Caesar's Legion itself wants to make New Vegas into a new Pagan Rome, with protection given to the Secularists, and make the Mojave Wasteland great again.

That part can't change. The core of the fic is Caesar's Legion being remade into a good faction, while the NCR is made into an evil Church Militant Faction. Instead of being misogynistic cannibal slavers, Caesar's Legion is like the glory of Rome at the time of Marcus Aurelius, while the NCR is remade into a Type 2 Eagleland fused with elements of Medieval-era Catholicism, Colonial Puritanism, and the Westboro Baptist Church. I know this is preachy, but this is a fic I really want to write really badly. But I want to write it the right way. I want to make an AU fanfic that is an Author Tract of sorts that is actually decent.

How can I make a shaky concept work? How can I make a Fusion Fic/Author Tract actually decent? I know to avoid Mary Sues, and keep spelling and grammar in the best shape possible. But what next?

Like you said, reading this, the first thing I thought was "RELIGION SUXS ATHEISM FOREVERZ". If you think its going to be an author tract, then one recommendation I can give to you is portray both sides as a sort of grey and grey mortality, not making the NCR a baby kickingly evil, and recognizing that the Ceaser's Legion may have some problems and discontent.

Overall, if you can focus more on plot and character, instead of focusing on the preachness and tracts, it should be alright.

[up]That is actually a very good way of preventing the worst excesses of an author tract. And Caesar's Legion is pretty gray, with it being a mix of Pagan, Shinto, and Atheist members (the atheist members tend to get into extremist territory, while the Shinto and Pagan members of the Legion have their own issues to work out), so I already came in with the plan of Black and Gray Morality. I'm not an atheist, but a Greco-Roman Neopagan, and I do have an intense dislike for Judeo-Christian traditions (Example: NCR Rangers are now NCR Inquisitors, and their uniforms are modeled after the soldiers of the IDF), however I have a strong respect for the New Atheist movement.

Now, on terms of characterization, there is Chun-Li, who is a Roman Pagan (follower of Mars and Diana) in this fic, but otherwise remains the same as her original personality.

Now as for the NCR, they won't all be baby-kicking villians, going by what you say, a good way to avoid it from being too bad is to portray sympathetic NCR characters, some of them even devout Christians. Whether they be innocent civilians, or even NCR troops who have a Honor Before Reason or My Country, Right or Wrong thing going for them.

Yes.

...

Okay, this probably didn't help much. "Laconic mysterious guy" thing aside, what do you say about... Hmm... Since it's going to be an Author Tract anyway, try this:

"Human nature is corrupt, and it can't be helped". So, it doesn't matter what label somebody wears - being "good" is a constant conflict against one's own nature. When people stop that fight, they become immoral, etc. Or, the fight is hopeless, and the only thing that can help (if anything), is... Love? Whatever?

This is the first thing that came to mind, because it looks like your story is about "Corruption vs Progress".

Oh, and where does Mr House fit into all this?

Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.
Otaku Cowboy
[up]Mr. House is a slowly decaying maniac, and both factions want him dead for reasons obvious. The Legion sees him as hinderance to progress, while the NCR wants to eradicate both him and all of New Vegas, as the NCR government and state chrch view New Vegas as a den of sin ready to be destroyed.
I guess you want to make him an object lesson of "How the Mighty Have Fallen"? It looks like it will work very well to illustrate the point of "Human Nature is corrupt". Something like this:

"As for House... He was a genius before the War. A man of mighty intellect, who had built an empire and managed to save himself and a small portion of his domain from the nukes. All this with the power of his own mind and determination. He forgot that his mind is that of a human, nothing more. Look at him now - a madman, playing the Wasteland like a giant round of poker on top of a roulette. He still takes pride in his genius, without realizing that it had rotten from inside."

Next, a few ideas you might or might not like. Mostly for the NCR, because something tells me you got a few good ideas for the Legion already.

  • Those NCR troops you've mentioned above, who are My Country Right Or Wrong and Honour Above Reason - why not make a whole squad out of them? You can contrast them with another squad of Rangers, who only care about shooting things, led by a Holier Then Thou Knight Templar.

  • A tribe similar to Reavers from Fallout Tactics, mixed with Orthodox Christian and maybe Islamic vibes - they revere pre-war technology, as it was saved by their deity to help them live in the Wasteland. If Brotherhood of Steel has any significant role in your fic, they could be this. If you are reminded of Technomagi from W H40k, then you have the right idea.

  • Another tribe, or an organization, either neutral or working for Ceasar. Basically slaver Bene Gesserit - they capture people against their will, yes, but then breed them to be better, stronger, smarter, etc, so their descendants could inherit the Wasteland. The "breeds" of this tribe could be respected as highly-professional warriors, workers, geishas, or whatever they were trained as.

  • A "Moral Antagonist" of sorts, who could be one of those Decent Devout Christians. To make this a complete counterpart, make him a male. As I understand, Chun Li is a martial artist, so you might make him a non-combatant, occasionally helping her and other people. In Fallout terms, imagine a char with 10 Luck, maximum Speech and Jinx perk (if you remember it from F2 * ); weapon skills wimpy and lower, and two out of the following three on average level: Medicine, Science, Survival. His argument to stick with NCR would be that the New Rome will fall, just like the old one did, and that Chun Li's efforts are better spent elsewhere - depending on the details of her adventures. But I don't think this will work if he preaches too much. They could have a "Your gods did nothing to me" attitude towards each other: "Why follow something that's an empty idol?" For bonus irony, he could get killed by the Knight Templar from the Ranger squad above.

Which ones? Would you like more details on any? Also, could you tell more about Bo S in your story?
Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.
Otaku Cowboy
Bo S will be allied with Caesar's Legion in my fic.
That's... Unwordy. Do you give them a special reason to break their isolationist attitude, or do you simply claim AU?
Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.
Otaku Cowboy
[up]I will probably claim AU, or they have an Enemy Mine relationship against the theocratic NCR
Since you aren't asking questions, I guess you're content with the suggestions you have so far. Still, there's one more thing I'd like to add.

I suggest you do some research on being a good Christian vs being a bad one. People are going to complain about your fanfic anyway, but this way they would be less likely to complain that you have no idea of what you're writing about. If you want, I can send you some notes on the subject.

The system doesn't know you right now, so no post button for you.
You need to Get Known to get one of those.
