Help Needed: Common Fantasy Villains:

1 Toaster Dust, Tue, 13th Mar '12 11:06:20 PM from Sacramento, California
I need to know as many different kinds of common fantasy villain archetypes as possible for a story i am working on. Individual trope pages will be appreciated but if you have descriptions for antagonists that do not have trope pages please post them here.

This should be moved to Writer's Block, methinks.
Forum Villain
The thing about archetypes is that they tend to not be limited to specific genres. It's a constraining mindset, methinks.

Lesse... in descending order (of power, that is... and admittedly, these are more general guidelines than hard-and-fast rules... and there can be a lot of overlap >.>),

  • First/Original/Ultimate/Source of/Sum of All Evil... evil as an Anthropomorphic Personification, basicallly.
  • The Magic Goes Away- the fantasy being sucked out of a fantasy world, basically. Not always portrayed as destructive, or even undesireable, necessarily, but more often than not, it's something to be desperately resisted.
  • Evil god
  • Dragon
  • Evil magic-user
  • Horde of Always Chaotic Evil things (anything from Orcs to Goblins to the Undead to the slightly out-of-place Horde of Alien Locusts you keep expecting to ask for directions to another story)
  • Evil royalty
  • Barbarian Horde
  • Coalition of Underworld-types/Criminals/general douchebags
  • Humanoid Abomination... this one tends to be a bit odd, as, at least in my experience, they tend to be more akin to really creative serial killers than serious Big Bad contenders in fantasy stories, maybe because they're not nearly as overwhelming and alien in a universe where Reality Warper-types are the rule rather than the exception.

That's all I've got for the moment... I'm generalizing pretty broadly, but that should cover a lot of the usual suspects.

Also, Cthulhuesque Eldritch Abominations seem to have become more popular these days (there were a bunch back in the classic sword-n-sorcery period too, admittedly).

Thanks for putting them in list form. I am planning a story that has as many different fantasy villains as possible in it and putting them into a a list really helps.

[up][up] Well, one of Lovecraft's closest friends was Robert E. Howard, so there's never been that much of a remove between evil/alien pulp fiction deities and evil/alien cosmic horror deities.

No problem- I'm kind of a list sort of guy anyhow, so no real worries on my end. Fantasy villains are all kinds of fun, and slamming them into one another can be seriously good times. The usual cautions apply, though- make sure you have a good idea of who each villain is and what they want.

11 Toaster Dust, Tue, 27th Mar '12 11:16:40 PM from Sacramento, California

Well the idea I started with was that in Fantasy there is always another villain or two waiting for the current one to be defeated and I had the thought "what would happen if one or more of the villains on the lower end of the food chain won? what would the others do?" and it just sort of grew from there.

The system doesn't know you right now, so no post button for you.
You need to Get Known to get one of those.
