I tried the missile thing before. Missiles are actually kind of ridiculously powerful, but the problem is that all your ships die before they hit. So it always ends up being a double KO. I've had much more success with beams.

so cloud saving didn't work as expected to transfer a save from one computer to another. should I truck on in this pretty much hopeless game or start a new one?

ended up starting a new game with a slight modification to my custom faction and it's been fairly well for the first 80 turns or so.

Speaking of custom factions, what's everyone else's favorite faction to play, or alternatively, what custom attributes do y'all use? Now that I've got the hang of it, I'm really liking the Sower affinity because it means I don't have to think about food production as much, and then I end up having a bunch of production systems.

I go all Sower all the time. Combining food and production honestly feels a bit gamebreaking to me. The default Sower traits kind of suck, but as the basis for a custom species they work very well.

Honorable mention goes to the empire for getting bonus production from an increased tax rate, but extra population gives you more money anyway, in addition to more science (and the same happiness penalties).

I've noticed that custom species are very, very nbalanced. And at least early on, custom Horation was just plain broken.

Anyone know how does the stacked industry work? I'm playing Automaton and have no idea how it works, so can't take advantage of it...

Basically you can save up industry by building nothing, or overflow from finishing things, and that saved up industry generates interest on itself. When you start building something afterward it applies all the stacked industry at once and you get a huge initial production. So... I'm not too clear on how to use it effectively since it's competing with "build money" or "build research" but I guess you can start pre-building something that you're about to research? And the existence of interest makes this more efficient than building it directly...

I've got a question: Why, sometimes, when I try and do something, does the building time go from whatever it was at first to suddenly taking 999 turns to do?

That usually happens when the colony becomes extremely unhappy and their production drops to 0. It can also happen when they get blockaded and lose access to a resource they need to make whatever it is.

@Clarste: Oh now THAT I can understand...basically storing up production you can use later...(used to that system since I played Starbase Orion)...also thanks!

Alright. I discovered by watching Total Biscuit's review of the game yesterday that I can make AI make stuff that'll increase happiness. I should probably do that.

Playing another game as Sheredyn...boy that's fun, the AI Sheredyn act all high and mighty and when it declare war against me it suddenly face my superior tech and industry...good fun, especially when my last game as Automaton I have LOADS of problem against UE (when I started looking at the score seriously at that game, I'm at 3rd, behind UE and Amoeba)...at least I won that game by going Wonder...

Also, how do you get the 20 units Strategic resource as UE/Sheredyn? You have to beat the game first?

Actually, if you look at the tech tree, there's a certain tech that gets you an improvement that increases the number of resources on a planet. So, just get a lot of planets with that resource, and then build that improvement on all of them.

Mind you, I've heard on the forums that it's a bit of a glitched achievement, think you have to play the UE to get it, despite what the text says.

After a few tries I finally won a game. Had to play on Newbie and I used the Amoeba. For the first forty turns or so I just spammed Colony Ships and ended up owning more than half the galaxy including every single Mundane Artefact source since I was trying for a Tech Victory. Alas it wasn't to be, when I was about a quarter of the way through to getting that done I was alerted that due to my patience and clever negotiating (refusing almost every deal offered to me because I'm not giving away my resources and I never researched enough to be allowed to initiate deals) that I was about to win a diplomacy victory. Seven turns from ascending I won diplomatically, so I guess the other empires hated me so much they voted me space president before I could ascend to a higher plane of existence. Got "The Way of Harmony" Achievement though so good enough I guess.

It's glitched, I got it on my 2nd try, both were with the UE.

Gratz. I remember my first few games, dear god the trouble I had with winning...

I find it practically impossible to win a Science victory, since you've already won three times over by the time you get there. You have to intentionally avoid getting the other victories, especially the Wonder victory which is kind of right there in the tech tree anyway.

I won a science victory because I held off on winning a conquest victory.

Depends on what other victory conditions you have enabled. If it's only expansion and supremacy, science victory is roughly 50 turns faster than killing the A.I.s 5 billion ships and invading the systems. The wonder victory is far too easy, though.

Got this last week, played for about an hour last night.

Seems pretty fun, which is the total opposite of what my friend told me of his experience. Is it worth looking into making a custom faction? I was playing Pilgrim last night, because the imagery of tech-evangelists trekking across the stars seems pretty awesome to me, despite their faction ability of packing up and leaving being, frankly, kinda pointless (unless I'm missing something).

Some premade factions have their point cost exceed normal limit though...then again some are way under the limit even if you remove their disadvantage...I'm looking at you Sophons...

Made a Sheredyn variant that had all the dust bonuses to see if I could abuse the half-price buyout ability (chances are, probably not, since I'm fairly sure diverse abilities are better than focusing too much on one aspect of the game).

Haven't tried it out yet, but will soon.

Double posting for great justice!

Managed my first win with a custom Sower faction focused on having the bestest ships. I probably won't do that again, because I really don't feel like the fleet battle bonuses are all that good (other than maybe Snipers). That Industry-to-Food ability is insane. Being able to ignore an entire branch of planet/system ugprades is awesome. So awesome that I actually went for a Wonder victory for the first time ever in a 4X game.

EDIT: Durr, Sowers, not Sophons.

I really liked food to production because it meant I could build all the things insanely fast.
