Quest XP should probably be a separate trope. Some games like Mass Effect 2 that is the only way to get XP as enemies give nothing.
Incidental XP like getting XP for completing maps (which can still fall under Quest XP like FFXIII-2), finding codex, picking locks, crafting, using gathering skills like [[World Of Warcraft picking flowers]], conversation options and such would be good.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!I like XP For Everything. Like, where you just rack up xp for everything you do.
Rhymes with "Protracted."That's not a bad idea.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickSo make it a Super-Trope to the others discussed here?
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Skimming the examples real quick, yeah, I think XP For Everything works. Most of them fit reasonably well. There are some that give you xp for like a bajillion different things, which fits to a T. There are some that give you xp for specific things, but like really unavoidable, like, just for walking around or reading books or talking to people you get xp, so you could accidentally level up just by putzing around. And I think that fits the spirit well enough. And there are some that are just about easy noncombat ways of getting xp, but I'd be willing to cut those.
Rhymes with "Protracted."I think the only other trope we'd be making is Quest XP. A game can give you experience for completing quests without giving you XP for every little thing you do, so it wouldn't be a subtrope.
I'm okay with XP For Everything as the rename too.

"for everything" implies "everything", as in quests, monsters, and mundane things.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. That's why it's not a supertrope. A game can give you Quest XP without giving you XP for everything else too.

Again, "for everything" implies a supertrope. If it's not, then I really think giving it such a name is a bad idea, as it would look broader than it is.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I like Exploration XP but suspect implying the trope is broader than it is (XP For Everything) is better than implying it's narrower than it is.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. How does XP For Everything make you think anything other than "game gives you XP for everything you do"?
The supertrope of Quest XP would be "game gives you XP for some things." XP For Everything is obviously much narrower than that, even to someone seeing the name for the first time.

"game gives you XP for everything you do"
It does. The thing is that defeating monsters and fulfulling quests are things. That is why the word "everything" makes it seem like a super trope.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Yeah XP for menial tasks is very different than Quest XP, Combat XP, XP From Using Skills etc. However "everything" makes it sound like all of the above but only the first one is the trope.
I know at least one game that uses only Quest XP and that is it. And another that can give XP for menial tasks like searching random boxes and items but not always for quests.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!That would be XP For Something, not XP For Everything, silly.
Rhymes with "Protracted."edited 12th Mar '12 9:58:18 PM by abk0100
Actually "something" implies a singular thing.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. Why do I get the feeling this was written by someone who dislikes the trope?
Fight smart, not fair.Miscellaneous XP? And some searchable redirects.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. That's the point. XP For Something is the supertrope that Quest XP (getting XP for one specific thing) would fall under. XP ForEverything obviously only includes cases of being given XP for everything, not just one or two things.
Let's just do a crowner. We've got a lot of good options to choose from.
But XP is usually not given for everything, just some things. Like Mass Effect giving XP for finding codex entries.
I think it's making more sense to create XP For Everything as a supertrope/index for how characters can gain experience points. Then putting in Combat XP, Talking XP, Quest XP, Reading XP, Exploration XP, Crafting XP, and Inaction XP.
I can't think of any other ways to get XP. A work would qualify for the supertrope if it uses 3 or more of the above methods.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.So redefine this trope and create seven new ones? Yeesh. Prefer one (XP For Everything or Miscellaneous XP) with the others as redirects.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. That is a much better argument against the name.
Maybe subtrope for Reading XP could work, but most of the others would end up being really tiny pages. May as well lump them all together.
Page action hooked as requested.

What would be the best way to fix the page?
Miscellaneous Experience is the best I can come up with. It's XP for weird miscellaneous things that shouldn't logically give you XP.
