"The kid's already gone anyway" Ross cut in, standing near a freshly broken window in the room. Those who went over to check would see that it had a dumpster directly below it, then see that a ten year old boy with a grey coat several sizes too large, a brown bag slung over one shoulder, and apparently no pants was running away down the alley.

"Fast little bugger" Ross muttered, rubbing his shoulder where the brick had hit him. The room itself was some kind of nursery or kid's clinic based on the faded wall decorations of blue sky, white clouds and colorful flowers. In one corner was a rectangular mat, probably from one of those physical examination tables; it had long tears in it around the edges, mostly pointing inward at random angles. Next to the mat was a couple discarded, empty water bottles. A closer look at the floor would see that what initially looked like just scattered dirt was actually hair. Lots and lots of course, mostly dirty hair.

Downstairs, Blight*

would hear something coming from the open door the group was going to check before Jadis spotted the kid. The sound was faint, but would be immediately recognizable to anyone who had dealt with walkers; the sound of moaning.

"We better get back to everyone else." Clark said. "Splitting up is a bad idea." Following his own advice, he promptly did so.

"Hey, we've got a walker down here!" Blight called.

He held his weapon ready, prepared to blow the walker's head off as soon as he saw it.

Clark grumbled. "Of course. Wolves and vampires I have special equipment for, but I have to use the Barrett for close-quarters." He holstered the Judge and pulled the Barrett M82 off his back.

"If you had any experience, then you wouldn't have ran after the kid like a fool. You had no idea whether or not it was human, especially since many monsters are capable of imitating a persons voice.", Dean said in flat tone, "Also it matters not whether kid trusts us. As long as we take him out of harms way, his trust is of no concern to me."

As he was about to turn to leave the room, something bothered him. The hair on the floor was odd. A kid couldn't grow that much hair, not unless he'd been living here alone for months and he really doubt that. He went over and picked up a few hairs, taking out a small piece of fabric and wrapping it in it.

Then he heard Blight call out and quickly moved towards the stairs, readying his smg for battle.

Ross looked back and forth between Clark and Dean, looking like he was about to add his own input, but was interrupted by Blight's call. "We can talk about this later; go, go!" Ross said, following Dean back down the stairs.

As Blight watched the doorway, the sound of the zombie became more clear. Even the shuffling of its feet could be made out. There was also, however, even more noises. Coming from the same way was something like a cross between shouting and growling. Runners, probably attracted by the noise of the walker and Blight's yelling.

Then there it was at the doorway; first a rotted arm, then the rest of the walker started to lurch into view, shambling slowly on its way out of the room.

Clark dropped to a prone position, bracing his rifle against the large recoil of the .50 BMG round. He didn't fire juuuuust yet, but his crosshairs were on the thing's collarbone, ready to blow a hole in its torso and decapitate it in one squeeze.

Blight fired the hunk of metal at the walker's head, then put the weapon in it's harness, and pulled out his dagger.

The hunk of metal caught the walker right above its left eye as it lurched forward towards the group, tearing out a quarter of the skull before flipping back into the wall above the doorway. The walker started to fall backwards, undoubtedly taken out.

Unfortunately, that was when two runners showed up. They came rushing through, the first one unceremoniously shoving the dead walker out of the way before sprinting towards the assembled group, still screaming. Ross's shotgun fired, hitting the first one square in the chest and making it stumble backwards, nearly losing balance. It wasn't down yet, but it was delayed. The second one however, was still up and charging the group at full speed, also screaming.

(OOC: Fair warning, I'd like to give more people a chance to respond to this one, so the next post may be delayed a bit depending on that.)

Clark didn't blink, adjusting his aim in a fraction of a second and putting an anti-materiel round through the runner's collarbone. It was decapitated and its spinal cord destroyed in one fell swoop.

Dean stepped forward towards the zombie that Ross shot and pulled out his handgun, instead of using his Kriss, and quickly placed two shots in the head while it was on the ground to kill it. Without a word, he then reholstered his gun and turned to Ross, "We must move now before they catch our scent."

OOC: Cant' you just wait for me? two pages since my last post! And I recall Masked and Dangerous didn't post either.

Alearth lazily yawned. "That was mr Zombie that I found in the basement earlier. He was playing seek'n hide. And then you dummies charged in! You don't know how to play hide and seek! You didn't wait for Alearth!"

She followed the group in the rear, with a pout.

"Too late for that. The gunfire must've alerted everything in the building by now" Ross said, pumping the shotgun as more runner screams came from the doorway. Another sprinted out, only to get caught in the chin and neck by Ross's second shot, making it face plant into the floor hard.

Two more followed close behind, one quickly hopping over the fallen corpses while the other diverted sideways for a split moment to go around on their path towards the group.

Meanwhile, from her new position Alearth would detect another zombie soul somewhere below her. It was active, but didn't seem to be moving from the spot it was at.

With a quickness of military training, Jadis raised her AR and put a bead on the closer runner. One had to anticipate with these things. She clicked the weapon into burst mode.

Badaba

A burst of FMJ rounds went down range.

Jadis's rounds caught the first of the two runners, two rounds hitting it in the upper chest and the third clipping its chin on the way into the neck. The runner fell to the floor, still moving but more slowly now as it tried to get up.

The second charged towards Blight, the movement attracting its attention. Ross fired his shotgun, hitting it in the arm as it made to claw at Blight, shattering the arm and making it miss the swing entirely. The runner seemed distracted by the sudden spray in front of it for a moment, before going for the swing with the other arm. However, by that time Ross was ready to fire again, and hit the runner in the head, killing it off.

Assuming someone else would finish off the runner on the ground before it got up, Ross started to reload. As he loaded in a shell, Ross glanced at Alearth, wondering what she meant. "... Wait, that's probably it. There's probably a stairway down to a basement in there" Ross said, motioning at the open doorway. A basement would be the best place to avoid sunlight, and thus where most monsters would hide at in this kind of place.

Bligt cut the runner's spinal chord at the base of the neck, paralyzing it.

That a proper way to nullify it's threat, or is it's motion magicy?

The runner fell back down to the floor, gurgling and trying to move to no avail. Ross finished reloading and aimed his shotgun back at the open door and waited a few moments. Then, satisfied that there probably wasn't any more runners, lowered his gun and fished around in one of his many coat pockets for something. "Good work everyone; now, let's go finish it" Ross said, finally bringing out a flashlight to hold alongside the shotgun as he moved ahead.

He moved through the door and made a quick sweep left and right. "Alright, Alearth and two with me. The other two watch the stairs in case something's still up there" Ross told them, bringing that air of authority back as he tried to think tactically. As he kept his gaze on the dark doorway in the room that likely went to the basement, he didn't notice that there was a little leather-bound black book near his foot on the floor.

Clark did notice it, however. Not willing to touch the thing himself, he pointed it out. "Book." He said. "Check for booby-traps first."

Ross looked at Clark then down at the book on the floor, and took a few steps back away from it. Leaning forward, he peered at it. "Don't see any wires or patterns in the floor" Ross said, glancing back up at Clark. "Unless someone took the time to replace that part of the floor with a landmine, then I think it's okay" he added jokingly.

A creak from the dark doorway got his attention, and he aimed his shotgun back at it again. "I've got this covered. You can check that out" Ross suggested, motioning his head at the book.

Clark raised an eyebrow, as visions of hexes danced in his head, but nonetheless, he picked up the book and stuffed it into a pack for later.

And then the landmine went off, killing everybody in the room.

Picking up the book did not, as Clark might have worried, put any sort of hex or curse on the man. It seemed, for all intents and purposes, to be a perfectly ordinary book, if somewhat small and lacking in any markings.

From the darkened doorway came the sound of more creaks, then a low moan. Ross stepped forward slightly and waited, until finally a slow moving figure thumped its way up the stairs and into view; another walker. Another loud boom from Ross's shotgun and the walker's head ended its existence as anything that could possibly be referred to as 'in one piece'.

Ross cocked the shotgun, then moved up to the doorway and flicked the flashlight on to peer down the stairs inside. "Well, the stairway is clear. Who wants to go first?" Ross asked a bit jokingly, looking back over his shoulder with a slight grin on his face at the others in the room.
