Misleading and inaccurate name, overlap with another index: Trans Gender Tropes get usage counts

[up] Wasn't the whole point of the LGBT community adopting "queer" to attempt and reclaim the word, and give it non-negative common use?
And I'm certain they're making great strides in doing so, but I don't think it's there yet.

And regardless, "Genderqueer" sounds more like something from A Clockwork Orange then something that can be used for a trope name.

Thanks

I see the Awesomeness.
It has to do with the structure of the word.

Right, so to people ignorant of the term it seems like Double Speak, as, presumably, do "feelgood", "Comcast" and "tumbledown". But it isn't, so no problem, right?

Gender and Sexuality Tropes seems to be a kind of super-index which also encompasses tropes involving heterosexuality and cisgenders, with Queer as Tropes being the LGBT sub-index of that. In theory, I guess Bisexuality Tropes and Transgender Tropes would be sub-indices of that, but that wouldn't address the problem of many tropes in the latter index having nothing, or very little, to do with transgender identities (often not even in terms of the execution of said tropes in fiction).

I think we're ready for one. I made and hooked it.

I think that rename has consensus. What we need the crowner for is what to rename it to.

Thanks

It's not that it is bad. It's that it sounds bad.

The cross burning comment was uncalled-for.

I'm sorry, I'm just unhappy that most people round here play the Thought Police card to easily

I wasn't aiming for the thought police, I was aiming for the "wow, that sounds kinda awkward, like a made up word from 1984."

Calling the crowner in favor of renaming. Make it so.
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.
Ok, so... Gender Bender Tropes then?

TV Tropes is fundamentally a site about storytelling, and names should be chosen for clarity in that arena, not whether they're used in academia or generally accepted in LGBT circles (whatever that might mean.) Genderqueer is a loaded and jargony term that I don't think fits our needs.

For a different reason, I don't think "Gender Bender" should be used either. For better or worse, Gender Bender has become a specific TV Tropes term of art (complete physical sex change via magic or Applied Phlebotinum), and there's already a fair amount of confusion to it. Putting "Gender Bender" in the name of an index that includes both Gender Bender tropes and a whole bunch of tropes that aren't is undesirable. I think the "Gender Blender" name is the best of the current options.

I like the name "Gender Blending Tropes", but if we title it that, you know a lot of tropers are going to forget the l when they try to pothole it, then wonder why they've gotten a redlink. (On the plus side, the "ing" should help distinguish it a little more than the "er" would . . .)

That name still reads as a misspelling of Gender Bending Tropes.

Alternative Titles: Trans Gender Tropes
14th Mar '12 8:26:53 AM
Vote up names you like, vote down names you don't. Whether or not the title will actually be changed is determined with a different kind of crowner (the Single Proposition crowner). This one just collects and ranks alternative titles.
At issue:
Previous crowner voted to rename the index Trans Gender Tropes as most have nothing to do with transgenderism.
