This is the sticky thread for questions related to the namespacing of works. As in, "which is the right namespace for this work?"
Ideally, questions already answered are covered on the Namespace Map. If you know a namespacing issue has already been resolved, but it is not yet documented on the Map, please update the Map.
If you want to suggest a new namespace, don't post here, but in Suggesting New Namespaces instead.
For easier reference, I've numbered my questions:
- #1: Where do animated films go? They seem to be distributed rather inconsistenly over Film/ (Puss In Boots, Whats Opera Doc), WesternAnimation/ (Disneys Anne Frank, Snow White), Anime/ (Princess Mononoke) and Disney/ (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Der Fuehrers Face).
- #2: There are a few songs which have their own pages ("Pirate Jenny"). Where do they go – to Music/ or to Literature/ ?
- #3: Where do composers go – to Music/ , or are they to be treated like other creators, which hitherto stay on Main/ ?
- #4: Where do Talk Shows, Game Shows and News Broadcasts go? I guess you could call these formats Live-Action TV but they're not really "TV series", as in Series/.
- #5: Am I right in assuming that Puppet Shows go to Series/ ?
- #6: What about “hybrid shows”, i.e. segment shows that incorporate both live action and animation? (e.g. Die Sendung Mit Der Maus)
- #7: Where to put picture books? I am thinking of books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max and Moritz — books that are really not complete without their illustrations. They are not (yet) ComicBook/s, but to sort them under Literature/ feels a little unsatisfactory too.
- #8: The rule is to put works into the namespace of their original medium. However, once in a while there is a work which is little known in its original medium, and almost exclusively known by its adaptation. I’m thinking of Das Boot, for example: there's a novel, but it is almost exclusively known by the Petersen movie.
- #9: Should One Book Authors who are invariably tied to a single work be treated as a creator or a work page rather?— Currently, we have Samuel Pepys and Herodotus, but shouldn't these pages be at Literature/The Diary of Samuel Pepys and Literature/The Histories rather?
- #10: There are cases where I’m unsure whether to use the English or the original title. Is there are hard rule that determines whether Der Ring Des Nibelungen goes to Theatre/Der Ring des Nibelungen or Theatre/The Ring of the Nibelung? Even Wikipedia uses the original title.
I'd be grateful for input.

The Scripture of the Great Duck is the Cult's proudest achievement. It is a work being constantly built upon and revised by the community, and it tells epic tales of love, loss, and Ducks. Mainly Ducks. It is considered sacred by the cult (actually it is just part random forum fiction, and somewhat original stuff). Everything below (except for writers), is fiction. Nice, productive comments and questions are appreciated and encouraged, especially for outsiders.
That is the description the work has for itself on its page. Now aside from the slight humor it refers to it as a 'forum fiction' (my gut instinct was to insert fan). After looking around a bit, I determined that it seems to refer to work based off of the forum itself. Now that's where it gets confusing. Is a 'forum' considered a work, or does it just fall under the category of real life, I.E. any regular thing that can inspire a story?

My game. I reckon it's gonna be a big oneBump. Does anyone know where to put it? I want to make sure everything is placed properly.
My game. I reckon it's gonna be a big oneYo Yo Games seems like something for Creator/.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWhat are you even talking about? Please re-read my posts. You're confusing something.
My game. I reckon it's gonna be a big oneUh, OK? Not sure why you'd mention Yoyogames here unless you were asking which namespace to put it under.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI was responding to your question regarding the other thing I posted on the last page.
So, is it a fanfic or not?

My game. I reckon it's gonna be a big oneShould we start a Creepypasta namespace? Looking at some of the creepypasta wiki pages, Sonic.exe is under video game, NES Godzilla Creepypasta is under Literature, Ben Drowned is under Web Video, and The Slender Man Mythos is under Franchise. Honestly, I think it's kinda dumb and could easily be fixed with a new namespace.
"Come on! Let's get this show on the road."Why? We don't use namespaces for genres; we use them for mediums. The sole exception seems to be fan fiction.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"A Creepypasta is a genre, persay. Same genre can exist in several different mediums (videos, text, webcomic-like and webgames) thus it gets spread out between namespaces.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI might not know tvtropes' page format/software perfectly, but if it similar to wikia, there are categories which could be used for genres as an alternate way to search for things. It wouldn't affect the structure of tvtropes except adding genre pages and updating various works.
My game. I reckon it's gonna be a big oneWe have indexes that work like categories. Namespaces are medium-specific and are used for disambiguation.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well, then perhaps a creepypasta index could be added?
My game. I reckon it's gonna be a big oneCreepypasta is already an index.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDoes anybody know how to move this? After a lengthy discussion in Ask The Tropers, it was determined that it is not a Fan Fic. My question, now, is what is it, actually?
My game. I reckon it's gonna be a big one@The Great Duck: Having a brief look at that, I'd put it under the Web Original namespace for now. I'm not sure if it would belong under web serial novel, since it looks like it's written by a bunch of different people, so I wouldn't put it under the Literature namespace. I don't know the specifics of how you transfer a page, so I can't help you on that. I haven't read enough of it to know for sure, but this is a fantasy story right? If so, you should index the page under Fantasy Web Originals. At the very least, it would count as a form of web fiction, so it should be listed under one of the subcategories on the Web Original Fiction page.
The stories vary, but I suppose fantasy could apply.
My game. I reckon it's gonna be a big oneWhere do we put a Public Service Announcement like Its Time?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI would need some ruling on the interface between the the Manga/ and Webcomic/ namespaces.
Since Axis Powers Hetalia is namespaced as a webcomic, rather than manga, I would think any sequential art that is first put on websites of user-generated content (personal blogs, Pixiv, etc) should be namespaced as webcomic, despite having an anime adaptation later on.
However, there exists so-called "online manga magazines" published by traditional manga publishers, the best-known being Square Enix's GanGan Online. While these are usually free-to-read online, they are subjected to the same level of editorial oversight one would see in normal manga that is published on print magazines. The several pages of works that are published this waynote are namespaced as Manga, and they are traditionally seen as manga. But if we define Webcomic strictly, they are in fact webcomics because they were published online first. So what should those be namespaced?
I also bring the issue on the article Yonkoma, as it requires a work to list under the Anime/Manga folder "if it is related to an anime in any way." I consider it an inconsistency is we look at namespacing rules, as this would cause the aforementioned Hetalia to be put in the Anime folder..

Scientia et Libertas | Per Aspera ad Astra NovaI have no problem with saying that any Print Creator company that puts up their product online first should still belong in their normal print medium. Thus, newspapers that put up articles on the internet is still the newspaper print medium, and a Tor Books book that gets published online is still literature, and a Marvel Universe comic released online is still Comic Book.
The Anime/Manga/Light Novel/Webcomic issue is dealt with in the Media Categories FAQ. To summarize, adaptations in Japan are usually much closer than adaptations in other countries, so it makes more sense to treat the diverse mediums as a single group. (Otherwise you get fans of the Hetalia anime being unable to find it because it isn't in the anime folders.)
