Which namespace does this work belong in?

Go To

This is the sticky thread for questions related to the namespacing of works. As in, "which is the right namespace for this work?"

Ideally, questions already answered are covered on the Namespace Map. If you know a namespacing issue has already been resolved, but it is not yet documented on the Map, please update the Map.

If you want to suggest a new namespace, don't post here, but in Suggesting New Namespaces instead.

    Original OP:
I busy myself with moving works off of Main/ and I've encountered a number of cases where I can't decide to which namespace something should go. Some of these questions may have been asked before, but there seems to be no general reference point for namespace issues. Maybe this could become a sticky thread for all media-namespace related questions?

For easier reference, I've numbered my questions:

  • #1: Where do animated films go? They seem to be distributed rather inconsistenly over Film/ (Puss In Boots, Whats Opera Doc), WesternAnimation/ (Disneys Anne Frank, Snow White), Anime/ (Princess Mononoke) and Disney/ (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Der Fuehrers Face).
  • #2: There are a few songs which have their own pages ("Pirate Jenny"). Where do they go – to Music/ or to Literature/ ?
  • #3: Where do composers go – to Music/ , or are they to be treated like other creators, which hitherto stay on Main/ ?
  • #4: Where do Talk Shows, Game Shows and News Broadcasts go? I guess you could call these formats Live-Action TV but they're not really "TV series", as in Series/.
  • #5: Am I right in assuming that Puppet Shows go to Series/ ?
  • #6: What about “hybrid shows”, i.e. segment shows that incorporate both live action and animation? (e.g. Die Sendung Mit Der Maus)
  • #7: Where to put picture books? I am thinking of books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max and Moritz — books that are really not complete without their illustrations. They are not (yet) ComicBook/s, but to sort them under Literature/ feels a little unsatisfactory too.
  • #8: The rule is to put works into the namespace of their original medium. However, once in a while there is a work which is little known in its original medium, and almost exclusively known by its adaptation. I’m thinking of Das Boot, for example: there's a novel, but it is almost exclusively known by the Petersen movie.
  • #9: Should One Book Authors who are invariably tied to a single work be treated as a creator or a work page rather?— Currently, we have Samuel Pepys and Herodotus, but shouldn't these pages be at Literature/The Diary of Samuel Pepys and Literature/The Histories rather?
  • #10: There are cases where I’m unsure whether to use the English or the original title. Is there are hard rule that determines whether Der Ring Des Nibelungen goes to Theatre/Der Ring des Nibelungen or Theatre/The Ring of the Nibelung? Even Wikipedia uses the original title.

I'd be grateful for input.

A haunted house can probably go in Ride/. They're in the same space, more or less, and I'm fine lumping them. I bet we already have some in there, but I don't want to check.

A more pressing issue is that they are works that have no trope lists.

Seems like. I'd move them to Ride/ if they get trope lists, and cutlist if they don't (with messaging the creator, of course).

It's been three days, and they haven't got any trope lists. Anyone agree with cutlisting the current articles (as they are in the wrong namespace) and asking the creating troper to restore them in the proper namespace, with trope lists?

OK; no trope lists other than ZC Es were added, so I went ahead and cutlisted those pages for being in the wrong namespace.

I'll also add them to Summary.Other.

Done, then.

Next off, RPG Maker: Is this namespace the accepted place for Ganme Maker stuff? There are some unnamespaced pages for that, but most of them list works made with the help of these, not tropes per se.

That's appropriate to me. DND is a bunch of books that are used as a tool to create a game. It isn't the same game everywhere, and isn't the same name every time. A computer program that helps you create a game sounds like it fits Video Game. Unless Computer Program is a namespace?

The page layout is in Creator format, and that works, but it doesn't create anything on its own.

Never mind, further edits show that it's in the wrong namespace; I am moving it now.

I notice that Historical Domain Characters don't have their own namespace (yet), but what's the policy for those who are also authors? Julius Caesar is listed under the Creator namespace. Miyamoto Musashi, however, is listed under Main. Should he also be moved to Creator?

There was a long discussion in the "Suggesting New Namespaces" thread about creating a Profile/ namespace for Historical Domain Characters. I don't think that all details were ironed out, so I would suggest to bump that thread and move the M... page to Profile/ once it's been settled.

I've just noticed that After Hours was moved to WebOriginal. After Hours with the edit reason "Moved over to After Hours - an original series that stems from the web belongs on said subpage, the only animated aspect of the series is the opening titles."

Given the description, I'd actually move it to WebVideo/ since it seems to be in video format.

[up][up]Yup, it's WebVideo/ alright.

I have a bit of trouble with World Of Color. It's part of the Disney Theme Parks, but it's a show rather than a ride, so I don't think Ride/ would fit. I've seen other Theme Park shows put in Theatre/, but I don't think this one features live actors, only special effects...

I'll move the other page, then.

On World Of Color, that one's really weird, but a work allright - I would put it under Artwork/ (a proposed namespace, kind of like Ride/ but for art).

A bigger problem is the King Arthur page. Its page type is "creator", but it clearly isn't about just the character but the whole Arthurian legends, making it a work article. I guess the namespace should be Literature/, but a name change would be needed too. "Arthurian Legends"? Or maybe the more technical "Matter of Britain"? Your thoughts?

I've always heard it as "Arthurian Legends", so I would support having the current general, non-Arthur-specific material moved off to such a page.

The namespace is tricky, though - given that they mostly appear in text format (I am not sure how to trope oral-only material), I would support Literature/ but I am not bound to that option.

We should be using Mythology for general stuff like that. Is that a namespace? I'm slightly embarrassed that I can't recall immediately.

Mythology isn't a namespace yet. It stalled over the question of how to arrange the corresponding Mythology, Myth, Legend etc. pages - ideally, they ought to match the namespace usage pattern, but their definitions are hanging in the air of the Oral Tradition TRS topic.

I remember having suggested once a Myth/ namespace as a catch-all for these stories (whole mythologies and specific stories), but I don't think it caught on. It would be a valuable addition, IMHO.

How about a ShortFilm/ namespace for live action works that are not part of a series or other show but aren't full length features?

Personally, I'd need persuasion that there are striking differences between a "film" and a "short film", since at first glance none seems namespace-distinction-worthy.

Yeah, that's not needed. People can figure it out from context, and it's better to put them in Film/ than to have to establish and enforce a standard as to what constitutes a short vs. long film.
