In 2009 Briscoe, a former environment artist on Mirror's Edge, took the project on, overhauling the visuals and level design for release as a commercial game.

Now that I think about it, that might have been an influence.

I tried playing it but really couldn't get into the "game". I'm cool with something slow but it seemed like I had to put in a lot of work holding that W key to get the slow, possibly-interesting story.

So it's basically a game where you walk around an island, doing nothing but listening to mind-screw narrations and scenery porn? No puzzles, challenges, scares, decisions, or enemies whatsoever? That's not a game, that's cinema! Normally I'm willing to try some experimental concepts, but no way I'm touching this.

Would you believe I never fully watched the original Indiana Jones trilogy? I gotta correct that someday.

This is very much a Love It or Hate It type of game/thing. Either the slow nature and abstract narration pull you in, or kick you off the boat.
Do not be so quick to make foolish offers, Daemon. Araghast too once thought I would be an asset to his cause. Look what has become of him.

Yeah, thechineseroom makes what could be arguably called "arthouse games." A previous mod by this creator was Conscientious Objector for Doom 3, where you played a guy who, well, objected to the practices of his workplace or something and had to run around doing stuff while fending off zombies with a shotgun that could only knock them down for a bit (it was loaded with rubber bullets, for some reason). It dealt with political themes, contrary to other mods by thechineseroom.

Heh, problem is, I don't recall any real Scenery Porn.

Sounds like it's not worth the money.

Enough people did think it was worth it.

[up] That's great. Doesn't mean everyone does.

Personally, I won't be getting this. I'm fine with putting story over gameplay, but when there's no gameplay? Not even choices to make, like in an RPG? No thanks.
I really like this

Is sick of your shit.
So there is a slight possibility that these guys will be involved with the next Amnesia: The Dark Descent game.

Good for them.

I'll pick up Dear Esther when it's on one of those 75% sales.

Is the free mod still available at all? The screenshots on Steam are showing some areas I didn't know existed and they look amazing.

I'm torn. I want to pick it up because they are making the next Amnesia game before the next Amnesia game comes out, but everyone keeps saying it's bad.

How much game do you want in your game?
45 Cronosonic, Mon, 27th Feb '12 6:50:40 AM from Sydney Relationship Status: Is that a kind of food?
I bought it, loved it.

So it didn't really have any gameplay other than walking around and exploring a bit while you hear narration. I enjoyed it anyway. The Scenery Porn the the details littered around the place goes a long way to making it worth it. The scenery is breathtaking, especially the caves. The art direction is brilliant. Looking around for little details and listening to the narration helps, too.

Much, much better than the original mod.

I can live with just wandering from place to place. I just don't want aimless wandering without knowing where to go.

Jonathan Blow praised and hyped Dear Esther, too.

I'm waiting for the inevitable indie sale before I play it, tho.

I played the older version (free) and it is definitely fun. Not in a shoot stuff and win kind of way, though.

And it is creepy, oh very much so.

Replay value is slight - it's something that works well the first time, but it lacks the adventure and thrill and sense of foreboding the next time, and merely becomes a race to see how fast you can get to the end.

I'm kind of with Mukora on this - if there was some interaction with the pretty environment (even if it's simple "figure out how to unlock this door" or something), it would be even better.

I finally played through it; I would not want to a second time.

When I first heard of this game and saw a spoiler-free review, I figured this game wouldn't be worth getting by itself. So I waited until the Humble Indie Bundle 8 to get this game alongside a bunch of other ones and eventually got around to playing it. In fact, I just finished it 5 minutes ago.

Anyway, I just want to say that this "game", if it can be called that, is not what it's hyped up to be, to me at least. I can sort of understand how some people can enjoy the storytelling and the whole thing as an experience, but simply put, I am not one of those people. I can appreciate the artistic values of a game. Hell, I think Flower on PS3 was one of the greatest experiences in my life (which would probably be dethroned by Journey if I ever get around to playing it). But this...I can't fully appreciate this, especially when there's little to no interactivity with the game world and the narration is a little too cryptic to catch my interest.
