The Resilient One

Well, I've never made a list of my characters to count them, but I'll go from memory. With three Na No Wri Mos under my belt (and one of 'em finished), along with a little bit of fandom OC's, I probably have a lot!

Lucian of Pisces- The protagonist of The Celestial Legend. He is young, idealistic, and very devoutly religious. Lucian is devoted to his duties as a missionary priest. Although he is not physically strong, he knows basic self-defense, and he has a lot of control over the magic he uses to help his allies.

Ivan Reitman- The secondary protagonist of The Celestial Legend. He is Lucian's opposite: being cynical, a non-believer in the Gods, and pretty much a brawler. He is Lucian's guard, and the two form a bond that is inseparable over their years and travels together.

Dylan Smith- A simple gunsmith, who ends up following Lucian on his journey. He is a man who believes in the power of human minds and technology, and is often seen wielding his own creations. Dylan is the realist between Ivan's cynicism and Lucian's optimism.

Evelina Randel- A water magician who also ends up following Ivan, Lucian, and Dylan. She uses her power over the water element to heal, but can do quite a bit of damage as well. As a citizen of the Libra nation, Evelina has a strong sense of justice, and is a little more on the "Lawful" side of Lawful Good.

Ursa Major aka Aaron, Former Priest of Pisces- A mysterious masked mercenary who has a contract to eliminate Lucian at all costs. He is very cold and calculating, and uses direct methods in dealing with his opponents. He's later revealed to be Father Aaron, Lucian's spiritual and adoptive father who turned to an assassin's life after he was excommunicated.

Ursa Minor aka Victor Aaron's partner in crime. He does mercenary work for the "fun of it", and enjoys toying around with his opponents, rather than cutting to the chase. His face is also masked, but he is often laughing in the midst of battle and would probably be smiling. He's a mercenary that comes from the small, independent Region Fourteen, a place that lives outside of the Orders' laws and protection. His job is mainly to support his family.

Irene of Scorpio- The High Priestess of the Twelve Orders of the Zodiac. She is very wise, and has used her rare gift of seeing the future timeline to help citizens around the world. She is very calm and well-mannered. First she is in "NPC" territory, but become an antagonist toward the end.

Lazarus the Crusader- Irene's most trusted Holy Knight. He is duty-bound, serious, and would follow Irene's orders no matter what the cost. Like Irene, he also becomes an antagonist toward the end.

Alex- Dylan's sixteen-year-old brother, who is running their gunsmith shop while his brother is out adventuring. He is known for his creativity.

Miranda- Evelina's fifteen-year-old sister. She was ill until Lucian came to help her with his magic.

Orlando- Evelina's father. A former Enforcer, or policeman of Libra.

Ruth- Evelina's mother, who still looks after all her children even in her old age.

Theo- Evelina's 2nd oldest brother, though he doesn't appear in the narrative.

Arthur- Evelina's oldest brother, who also doesn't appear, but is mentioned.

Adelita- A civic leader of one of the Zodiac regions Lucian visits.

Elizabeth- Ursa Minor's wife, and the healer of her village.

Daniel of Aquarius- A Sinister Minister who serves as a minor antagonist during Lucian's travels.

Frederic of Aquarius- Daniel's Holy Knight.

Orion- The God of the world The Celestial Legend takes place. In the past, he was known to be draconian and unforgiving, but he's softened up after handing some of his godly duties to his twelve children, the Zodiac.

Pisces- The patron saint of Lucian's Order.

Libra- The Grand Judge of the Zociac, who gave Ivan a lighter sentence for a crime against the heavens. Is mentioned by Ivan as the only Zodiac he respects.

Aquarius- The water-bearer who cannot be heard by his own Order due to their corruption.

Scorpio- An ambitious Zodiac who wants to see his name forever carved in stone on earth and the Heavens, by making Irene a saint.

Cancer- The patron saint of Adelita's region. Makes a rare appearance because he misses the earth.

( And that's all I'm leaving for now. More lists will come later, but I have to go. :3 )

Not an extensive list, mostly just major characters. All ages are at the start of the plague, by the beginning/end of the story everyone is 10 years older.

Ace(aka Anna Christina Evans) 19. Nerdy college student who becomes a badass Mama Bear guardian to her cousin Angel. She Jumped at the Call to work for Phoenix in order to provide food for her family. She is a believer in spite of her father being a charlatan. Although she is not very feminine she has a strong maternal side and is a Friend to all children.

Teach (aka Mary Lawrence Evans) 38. Mother of Ace. She Homeschooled Ace by choice, Angel of necessity. Later she starts a school for all the children. She lost her siblings in the plague, along with most of her physical strength, but not her indomitable spirit.

Angel (aka Ally Lawrence) 5. After she Lost her single mother (Teach’s sister) early in the plague she was immediately ‘Adopted’ by Ace and Teach. Fiercely intelligent. Reads everything she can get her hands on. She loves animals and younger children. She grows up to be very beautiful.

Ghost 19 Mysterious loner. Tough, strong, cautious, avoids crowds. He works as a scavenger for Phoenix and it’s employees. He can find anything you need. He is extremely loyal to his friends. He believes in honor, decency, and chivalry, and is very respectful of women. Claims he does not like kids, yet needed no persuasion to take Julian as his apprentice. Best friends with Tango. He is in love with Ace but will not admit it even to himself.

Julian (aka The Kid) 6. He lost his mother early in the plague. He lived with his father, barely scraping by, for almost 3 years until his father’s death. He was found and adopted by Ghost. He tries to model himself after Ghost but he is more relaxed and fun-loving than his mentor. He falls in love with Angel and is completely terrified of Ace. Although he could barely read until he met Teach at about 9 years old he latter feels driven to become a writer.

Tango (aka T.J.) 21. He is a born leader, likeable charismatic outgoing. He has a severe case of Single-Target Sexuality for his Fiancée (latter wife) Athena. He tends to see all other women as sisters or aunts. He mentors new recruits including Ace.

Athena 20 A leader, can make people trust her. She is extremely faithful to Tango but likes making him jealous. She likes Ke$ha. She is more feminine than Ace, but she can still mess you up in hand to hand combat if necessary.

Ty 20. He is Tango’s cousin and the leader of the Blackstone Pirates who he considers a gang. Most consider the Pirates a band of fairly harmless, homeless teenagers. It is debatable if he is actualy an Ethical Slut or just a Casanova Wannabe.

J.T. 9 Tango’s ½ brother and one of the Blackstone Pirates. Tango allows him to remain in the gang because he is “safer and on fewer drugs” then he would be if he joined Phoenix.

DJ was born 7 years after the start of the plague. He is the son of Tango and Athena. The rest of the above consider themselves his aunts and uncles. He is considered a symbol of hope for humanity’s future. No pressure smile

Jason 22 He is the leader of a hippy commune which Ace discovers. He tries to tempt her away from Phoenix. He becomes a good friend and ally.

Kendra age unknown. The first dog to have a human master since the plague (canines avoid the infected). Faithfull companion to Julian. Mother of 4 pups.

Denger - Patriarchal chieftain of a prehistoric African clan destined to settle the Nile Valley and help found the ancient Egyptian civilization. Middle-aged guy who is traumatized when his eldest son and heir gets killed by a lion during a rite of passage.

Sabef - Denger's son, the guy who gets killed by a lion.

Baktre - Denger's first wife and Sabef's mother.

Ruia - Denger and Baktre's daughter and Sabef's sister; Denger considers making her his new heir after Sabef dies.

Senet - Denger's second wife, who is power-hungry and wants her son to be the next heir rather than Ruia.

Ineni - Senet's son, the alternative new heir to Denger's "throne".

Wahka - Chieftain of a clan opposed to Denger's. He wants to conquer Denger's clan.

Abana - One of Ruia's female friends. Relatively minor character.

Jacobus Ottosiarck- Old Soldier, Genius Bruiser, A Father to His Men, Brilliant Tactician, Knight in Sour Armor, Deadpan Snarker, Prideful Sonofabitch, Magnetic Hero. Caustic to people connected to his past, something that he's desperately tried to leave behind. Does whatever he can to stick to his principles, even as the world around him descends further and further into a World Half Empty.

The Solitaire- Determinator, Badass Assassin with the Conservation of Ninjutsu, extraordinarily deadly martial artist, crack shot, imbued with an indominatable will to live, Combat Pragmatist, and is pragmatic to the point of occasionally getting close to the Moral Event Horizon. More than willing to sacrifice or throw away the lives of anyone who, he believes, has not yet earned the right to live.

Ariana Awolowo- Team Mom, Broken Bird, Action Girl, Shrewd Diplomat, The Lancer, Warrior Poet. One of the few emotionally stable and well-balanced individuals in this particular group. Provides both a contrast/control specimen to this Dysfunction Junction, whilst also helping them cope with their tragic pasts. Unfortunately, she's next in the Trauma Conga Line.

Eck. That's it for now. I've got other things to do.

Main Characters (because as interesting as Surgit is, do you really need to know about the owner of Gabe's local curry house?)

Dr Gabriel Wright PhD, aka Gabe. (Leading Man). Criminal Psychologist and Psycho-analyst. Mostly deals with serving prisoners and newly arrested people. Self employed, but contracts to the Ministry of Justice/National Offender Management Service - called in for cases when a prison's forensic psychologist needs one of the top practitioners. Has written books that are 'required reading in at least five university courses', as well as co-writing 'Frasier was Wrong', a 'how not to do it' manual for psychologists/psychiatrists, using the sit-com Frasier as examples of bad practice.

Gabe is very good at dealing with other people's problems, but can't sort his own life out, and has very little confidence in himself. Gabriel was very shy at school - he was the nerd before nerds were cool (mid 80s). His friends think he adopts 'masks' - the person he wants to be. Doesn't realise how adorkable he is. He has never admitted to himself that he has spent the last 25 years trying to replace...

Lucy Payne (nee Castle) Gabriel's first love, and the first girl to properly break his heart. They were together when he was Upper Sixth and she was Lower Sixth (now called years 12 and 13 - think the last two Harry Potter books, where N.E.W.Ts equal the UK's 'A-Levels'). She is the PA to the married-couple bosses of a small but successful industrial moldings company. Usually is attracted to men who are dominant, Gabriel was the exception to this.

Major Jason Hardie, DSO, Royal Marines, Gabriel's best friend, and one of the 'three musketeers'. Jase bullied Gabriel for a couple of years before 6th form, until one day Gabriel stood up to him and told him off. Jase invited Gabriel to a video evening in a clumsy attempt to apologise, where they found the depth of Gabriel's normally quiet character. Jase is strong, athletic, handsome, and attracts girls easily. Though he and Gabriel may be an odd couple this is where the strength of the relationship lays: Jase protects the bookish Gabriel, Gabriel's thinking helps Jase. Gabriel is the only one of his peers who can get away with scolding Jase at school.

Gabe was jabbing Jase in the chest, despite the fact that Jase loomed over him, and would flatten him in a fight. Rich stood a few feet behind with a bemused grin.

“What the hell do you think you are doing, you cock? We’ve allowed you to do this when Charlie didn’t want you around, but we all knew each time it was while she got her head together. Why are you such a cock? What does she have to do to stop you treating her like crap, make sand letters too? Why are there dicks like you always trampling on other blokes? You don’t have to be some alpha male all the time. You complete and utter cock!”

Anyone else would get thumped. Talking of Rich...

Rich(ard) Gibson, the third of the three friends, the ego in the Freudian Trio. Probably a better friend to Gabriel and Jase than they were for each other; he is the level headed one - the balanced mix of the two. He is the calming influence on the three man band. He runs his own business that makes high tech circuits for energy systems. When he was 15 'Charlie' (Charlotte) said to him ‘My mate fancies you, will you ask her out?’, which is how he met the love of his life...

Lizzie Gibson who still adores Rich after 30 years together. If you see a group of women together, Lizzie is the loud one, not offensively so, but she's the one buying a round of shots for everyone. Lucy once described Rich and Lizzie as

like they are two halves of the same person.
Her best friend of over thirty years is...

Charlie Hardie met Jason at the video night in the 6th at Rich's house Jase had invited Gabriel to. Became like a sister to Gabriel, and they have supported each other through their darkest moments. Jason asked her out the day after the video evening. So did Gabriel, which has led to a somewhat odd relationship. People who have seen her and Gabriel dance together to 'Tainted Love' can't help but describe it as 'incestuous'. When Charlie and Gabriel danced together at her and Jason's wedding, it caused a stir, but Jason thought it was hilarious. Lizzie once said that she felt Charlie wasn't sure she picked the right teenager, something echoed 27 years later by...

Jennifer Wright (nee Sharpe), Gabriel's wife, and fully qualified psychiatrist, and co-author of 'Frasier was wrong'. Initially attracted by Gabriel's 'adorkableness' when they were students, and his quick mind, the years of mental and verbal fencing have driven them apart, despite the fact they both enjoy the 'competition'. Rich calls her Maris behind her back, a reference to Niles Crane's wife.

Annie Lucy's best friend at school. Blonde, bubbly and elfin, it is Annie that boys see first, not Lucy.

Rachael another one of Lucy's school friends, now a good friend in their 40's. Becomes (accidentally) Gabriel's nemesis, because she doesn't understand adult Gabe's actions. This is because Lucy never told her why she left...

Gary Payne, Lucy's abusive husband.

Nicky, the teen who split Lucy and Gabe up in the sixth form. Lucy couldn't understand Gabriel's attitude. He treated her as an adult who could make her own decisions, but she thought his refusal to forbid her to talk to Nicky was a sign he didn't care.

Dan and Martin Wright - Gabriel and Jennifer's teen sons. Dan is a Jase in the making, and Martin is emo.

William (10) and Lottie Gibson (8)- Rich and Lizzie's kids.

Betty Hardie- Jason and Charlie's teen daughter.

Val, a relationship councellor and friend of Gabriel.

Muriel and Vic Castle, Lucy's parents.

Hakkadus Mechur- A Sad Clown. Overcame a hard childhood, joined the military and had a bright future ahead of him. He advanced through the ranks, but after a terrible battle, The Slaughter At Constantine, where he was on the losing side, it kind of broke him. A member of the Lone Hundred, the one hundred survivors rallied by Major Ottosiarck who punched through enemy lines and made it to safety, out of the twenty thousand men on their side. He obsessively clings to an optimistic outlook, because he can't stand the thought of things getting worse.

[up][up]Furthermore, I'm only listing my complex, well-developed characters. I'm a busy man, so I can't go and list all of the minor supporting characters too.

Here's another one.

Malefice- The disordered ego of an experimental collective. Originally mistaken as an AI in control of a hive mind, it was soon discovered that the individuals in the collective with the strongest "mental" attributes naturally gained influence over other members of the collective, and their minds "blended"/merged in order to form a single entity. With a fractured, disordered intellect, Malefice has multiple, disassociated personalities which become "active" randomly at different times. Each of these constituent personalities often has their own goals and agendas, some of which go completely against the goals of the other personalities, making Malefice notoriously unpredictable and unreliable. One personality may actively assist someone that another personality considers hostile and antagonistic. One of the more "philosophical" personalities gave the name "malefice" to itself because it doesn't recognize its own right to exist. Trying to upload itself or at least gain access/influence to interstellar information networks.

From the Blood Oath project:

  • Theign "Storm" V'lgre-Nasthyll: Protagonist, Umbrian warrior, and Anti-Hero. A young man making a near-hopeless effort to keep a blood oath he naively took as a boy.
  • Tigris Liarren: Co-deuteragonist, sorceress, and aspiring guardian of something or other (despite harboring a festering hatred for her half-sister Hashine). An ally and close friend of Theign's, as well as an eventual love interest (but for how long, I still haven't decided).
  • Harrow: Crazy co-deuteragonist, wandering ex-soldier, musician, and ladies' man. Initially sticks with the group out of sheer boredom, but quickly feels a calling to add meaning to his shallow life. The red Oni to Theign's blue.
  • Harrumek: The Eldritch Abomination, Complete Monster, and Big Bad of the series. A demi-god who cheated in the division of territory, at the expense of Theign and his people. It's a bit more complex than that, but anyway.

  • Revellu: Theign's father and idol. A Jerk with a Heart of Gold and one of the Chieftain's faithful lords. An incredibly skilled swordsman, killed in battle when he and his men pulled a You Shall Not Pass! against Radula's invading army.
    • Nialle: Revellu's wife, Theign's mother. A warm but strong-willed woman who was killed in the rout following her husband's last battle.
  • Radula: The fiery young warlord who sought to quickly end the war he inherited from his father, despite actually being an Umbrian. Seems to enjoy the ol' "conquering-and-oppressing" routine, but has Hidden Depths which I have yet to figure out.
  • Alice: A mysterious girl Theign manages to run into quite a bit. Seductive and cunning, she keeps her motives well-hidden.

That's most of them, anyway. All in all, I'd say they're a decent bunch, in need of some more variety and less cliches. As for setting, I honestly don't know. I'd like to make this 100% fantasy-themed, but I'm not experienced in writing that genre. Perhaps a dual-universe, with overlaps between them? I dunno.

Some more. Mostly villains.

  • Sandalphon: Starting in book 2, this slightly chubby ten year old might not look very menacing, but believe me when I say the magic he uses is as horrifying as it is powerful. Despite lording over the Heavenly Blades, he is not Anathema's favorite agent, namely because Even Evil Has Standards. His Spell Core is Den of Lions, which makes it so his being is tied to 16000 "Heavenly Beasts", which he can combine and control to make terrible creatures.

  • Metatron: Vice's savior, Kyrio's rival, and archenemy of Matthew, this angel is present through most of the books, though his full impact is not felt until the final four. Uses Midnight Control, which lets him control dark energy and Stagnant Mana.

  • Michion: The sole female of the Trismegistus, but do not look for any mercy in her. You will find only sadistic bloodlust. She is actually the cruelest...and correspondingly weakest member. Uses a whip sword, Spell Core is Pain Flux, which stimulates all of the opponent's pain receptors.

  • Hector Gibbs: Hitman who has a taste for Anything That Moves, this self described omnisexual mixes innuendo with death threats. Strange and silly he may seem, but do not underestimate him. NO MATTER WHAT. Uses a pair of huge hand guns. He uses Imagine Max, a Spell Core that lets him make strange "Shells" for his guns.

  • Sharon Tate Roman: The main villain of book 2, though she is just an underling of Hector. She is quite The Vamp, using sexuality to make people do as she wishes. She is a Medium, which means she can channel spirits into her X Steel, which takes the form, initially, of a gauntlet ending in talon like weapons. She is very, very good at using complicated spells due to her X Steel Manipulation ability.

Seiryu-> The main character, he's the prince of ice dragons, and dragons period, but he doesn't know the royalty bit. He's a coolheaded badass but he isn't cold, though a little stoic.

Maru-> Seiryu's best friend, cool nice guy, a bit perverted ( he's a teen, reality ensues ), human but not quite puny thanks to charles atlas superpower.

Imoto-> Maru's ( maybe twin, maybe younger ) sister, slightly ditzy, kind and selfless but not to good is dumb level. She is on roughly equal footing with her brother ability wise.

Sofu-> Early old mentor/sage/master, he was the last guardian of Seiryu's egg, also an old pervert, come to think of it he's pretty much the old everything, including badass grandpa.

Annachi-> One of the last elder vampires, about 2 millenia old, she's a very experienced lady of war.

Byako-> The rival, he's a tiger-cat boy, initially wants to kill Seiryu because his clan was destroyed by what he identified as a dragon. Afterwards he just wants to beat him as a friendly grudge.

Jin/Izanami-> Eccentric mentor, something of a trickster, pretty much only helps if it makes things "fun", she's the capital G creator god(dess) for all intents and purposes.

Hyo-> Seiryu's father, Great Dragon King ( including king of the ice ones ), he's pretty much an eldritch abomination scale and power wise but not madness inducing and other related utter wrongness traits.

Demon King Cerberus-> He's exactly what it says on the tin.

Ryukotsukaikyomaru-> Demon and dark dragon prince, he's actually stronger than the demon king and queen but he has to bow initially because they know how to make the powergap meaningless.

Yami-> King of dark dragons, father to Ryu...maru, he's the one who destroyed Byako's clan. Also a sort-of eldritch abomination like Hyo, but less on the sort-of side.

Demon Queen Chikyo-> She's also exactly what it says on the tin, plus Ryu...maru's mother, so she more or less "romanced" Cthulhu.

Aelfa-> Arcadian Queen, she's a reasonable authority figure, a lady of war and made of light.

Orochi-> The serpent king, war loving warlord ( gentlemen, he likes war ) and obsessed with strenght and power, which he obviously has shit tons of.

Inari-> Kitsune elder, four-star badass as he's basically a general equivalent, also an old soldier.

Yggdrasill-> The eldest kitsune elder and lore master.

Aero-> Wind dragon king, black lord of the void, like other dragon royalty he's eldritch abomination level in scale and power and he has a ( pretty well justified ) god complex.

Maeko-> Okami queen, black lady of the night, she's an old friend of Hyo and a rough equivalent of Seiryu's godmother, she's not really evil but sides with the bad guys just because it provides better fights.

Genbu-> Black lord of the land, later rival to Byako, he's arrogant about his strenght but he knows not to bother the more powerful black lords too much.

Aikyo-> Black lady of darkness, Izanagi's latest pupil/sevant, she's also his personnal enforcer. She's bitter at the "world" and hateful, practically worships her master and has an inverted view of metaphorical light and darkness, for exemple she would say a "shade of hope" instead of a "ray of hope" or "my darkness in the light" rather than "my light in the darkness".

Mephisto-> Black lady of destruction, Goddess of Oblivion, Queen of Nogitsune. She's a torture technician and a kind of dark cloudcuckoolander, her favorite foods are cake, ice cream and blood.

Shinigami-> Black lord of death, he's an unfettered stoic combat pragmatist, he's basically just there to kill, period. Unless of course his current goal doesn't involve killing, in which case he will only kill if it happens to be the most effective way to achieve said goal.

Shuzaku-> Black lord of Heat, he's a bishonen so eventual fangirls ( and gay fans ) can nickname him the Lord of Hotness or something. He's peace-loving to an extent and honorable in the sense that he wouldn't fight an obvious curbstomp battle if he can avoid it and will only use minimal force if he can't.

Tengeki-> Black lord of the heavens, also kind of a bishonen, he's calm and aloof, he'd also try to avoid curbstomps but in his case it's only because he feels it would be a waste and if it's unavoidable he won't go easy like Shuzaku would.

Ragnarok-> Black lord of the End, he acts like he's king of the cosmos, likes boasting and flaunting his power because he knows he's the weakest black lord, so he's essentially a cosmic bully.

Faust/Izanagi-> Sovereign Of The Black Lords, God of Evil, the big bad. He's ridiculously powerful far beyond multiversal levels, he doesn't actually need the Black Lords, nor does he really want to destroy all of existance, he just wants to watch big chunks of eat rot away because he finds that entertaining. Pretty much a complete monster.

I also plan on having Tsukiyomi, Susano'o, Amaterasu and the 5 Kotoamatsukami in there but I don't have clear roles for them yet.

Alexia: Traumatised farmer living on the planet Pacific-10. Mostly just stares at her farm all day and talks to friends via a chat client rather than meet them in person

William: Self-Appointed law enforcer on the planet. Hates Richard because of his relentless stalking of Alexia.

Richard: Described as a "Creepy bastard" by pretty much everyone. Stalks Alexia.

Gloria: Makes most of the furniture and computers that the others use. Also hates Richard and regularly threatens to kill him. Is not happy that they're a viable breeding pair.

Damien Woodhouse - The protagonist; Damien is a cynical 16-year old high school sophomore and a Jerk with a Heart of Gold who dies trying to prevent an armed robbery, only to wake up in limbo a month later, as a poltergeist. While in limbo, the Grim Reaper tells Damien he has inhuman levels of spiritual energy, leading to Damien becoming a disciple of the Grim Reaper on Earth. The story follows Damien fighting escaped monsters, demons, and evil spirits. We later find out that Damien is actually the son of the devil and his mother has been preventing all influence of Satanism, raising Damien to become an anti anti christ (The Omen)

Nancy Woodhouse - The deuteragonist; Damien's 20-year old sister. Nancy is prone to recurring nightmares, which has led to her becoming an insomniac, with the side effect of being cranky and paranoid. Nancy sees Damien sneak out of the house late at night and decides to follow, only to learn of Damien's new powers. She is commonly shown to be an action girl/final girl, fighting the monsters whenever Damien can't, instead of running away or being a bystander. (Nightmare on Elm Street)

Rosemary Woodhouse - The literal Team Mom; When Rosemary was 18, she had her first child with an unnamed boyfriend (Nancy) but the boyfriend ran off with another girl. Rosemary decided to move to Chicago with Nancy, hoping to start a new life, and met Norman, a "Long Hair" gang banger who attracted Rosemary because all girls want bad boys. Unknown to Rosemary, Long Hairs were the enemies of the Neo Nazi Skinheads. The Skinheads, led by Imhotep (The Mummy), abduct Rosemary in order to use her in the ritual to summon the Antichrist into her. Rosemary decides to keep the baby (Damien) and teach it to embrace its Human-side. (Rosemary's Baby)

Detective Helsing - The supporting protagonist; Detective Helsing is an occult detective with the ability to see the paranormal. Helsing and Damien crosses path many times and the story sometimes even switches to just a Helsing story.

Grim Reaper - Because the Grim Reaper cannot manifest into a physical form on Earth, it makes Damien one of its disciples to close the Hell portal which the evil spirit, Pazuzu (The Exorcist) has opened.

Pazuzu - The Big Bad. Some how manages to open a portal to Earth from Hell, allowing many demons and evil spirits to escape in hopes to create an army, which will then allow him to take over Heaven and Hell.

Discarding canonical, the character list for In The Service. (This should probably be fifteen-twenty extra long with canonical people, tbh, and I know I'm forgetting a few minor characters of my own as well.)

Samuel al-Faddil: Mage Commander (commander, major). Officer In Charge, Mage Team Seventy. Main viewpoint character for much of the story, introduced to provide a more normal person's perspective on the canonical main characters. Because he's lucky, and his Ancestral Weapon has features no longer considered morally sustainable, he can sometimes fight at their level; by luck, good judgement, and skill, he is one of the few people to fight Wolkenritter and win, or even survive, earning the respect of both the "good guy" and "bad guy" ones, and the friendship of several of the former. Sustains serious injuries and undergoes Combat Cyborg conversion, putting him a little closer to the weight class of the canon characters...though he has little faith in this and still tends to employ the same strategies of surprise and superior numbers rather than get into duels.

Aziza Citroneon: Mage Officer Second Class (lieutenant). A member of Team Seventy from the start, she's a technical specialist and was commissioned directly from civilian life. Killed in action during the boarding of the New Belkan ship Invincible.

Bei: Senior Mage Specialist (very senior NCO; outranking Bei requires being a commissioned officer). A longtime friend and former mentor to Samuel; there are references to Bei having been Mage Specialist Second Class Samuel al-Faddil's first partner. Originally partnered with the youngest member of Team Seventy, Carolyn Altima. Part of the reorganized Team Seventy and partnered with Sette.

Ricard Heinrichs: Veteran Mage Specialist (low-middle NCO). Samuel's original partner. Badly hurt by an Other-Signum during the attack on Midchilda, offered a transfer by Samuel, refused it. Killed in action during the boarding of Invincible.

Cora Zeal: Mage Officer First Class (captain/lieutenant commander). Cora was Team Seventy's original 2IC. She left when she was promoted to Mage Commander, going to command her own Mage Team before the war began. Replaced by...

Simo Fiat: Mage Officer Second Class. 2IC of Team Seventy from the departure of Cora Zeal to the boarding of Invincible. Simo was openly friendly with the attached Combat Cyborgs, repeatedly flirting with Tre. He clears the bridge of the Invincible alone but does not survive so doing. Tre is particularly hard-hit by his death.

Carolyn Altima: Mage Specialist (no direct equivalent, private or perhaps recruit), later Veteran Mage Specialist. 15 when the story begins, Bei's partner. Impetuous at first, held in check by her partner. Badly injured during the boarding of the Invincible, reigning her in somewhat, but earning her a promotion for her actions. Part of the reorganized Team Seventy, partnered with Rudolf Galland. Injured again at Iorgu, only a few days after her sixteenth birthday. She's offered a transfer to a noncombat posting by Samuel, at Carolyn's mother's request. Carolyn refuses it, wishing to remain with the team, and has put in for Combat Cyborg enhancement.

Vult: Ground Forces General, Chief of Ground Forces. First appears in the aftermath of the Rogue Wolkenritter attack on Cranagan, where it's established he's one of the major reasons for poor relations between the Navy (where most of the other characters come from) and Ground Forces. Considered after the escape of Jail Scaligetti from prison to be incompetent; it's eventually discovered that he is in fact a traitor and was complicit in Scaligetti's escape, after which he is arrested and replaced by General Hans Luck.

Sollex: Ground Forces Brigadier General. Responsible officer for the defense of Cranagan, he was not at his post when the Rogue Wolkenritter attacked, thrusting command of the defense onto Genya Nakajima. Several units that should have participated in the defense did not accept Genya's orders and played no part in the battle while awaiting orders from Sollex which did not come. Appears only in the aftermath, where it is made clear that whether he resigns or is subjected to a court-martial, his career is over. It is implied he committed suicide shortly thereafter.

Dust: Veteran Mage Specialist. Has no speaking lines, never described. Member of Team Seventy, he survives the boarding of the Invincible, but is transferred out of Team Seventy when it's rebuilt.

Moulders: Veteran Mage Specialist. Has exactly one speaking line, though it isn't said it's his(!), never described. Killed during the boarding of Invincible.

Kate Sentri: Mage Officer First Class. The 2IC of the reorganized Team Seventy, Kate is tall, blonde, blue-eyed, looking considerably more Belkan than she actually is. She's also admirably eager. When Samuel is injured, she is immensely frustrated to have to order a retreat from a second group of Rogue Wolkenritter. When Kate is badly wounded in the battle for Iorgu, Samuel must order her off the field despite severe facial burns. Partnered with Micheal Wittman.

Rudolf Galland: Veteran Mage Specialist. Part of the reorganized Team Seventy. His brother was Air Force and killed by a Combat Cyborg during the Scaligetti Incident. This causes friction when the same Cyborgs are attached to Team Seventy, and it appears that he will have to be transferred out. His life is saved by one of them during a skirmish with Rogue Wolkenritter, which appears to stabilize the situation though he is still distant.

Hans Luck: Ground Forces General, Head of Ground Forces...though many of his subordinates consider his true rank to be "Son Of A Bitch, First Class". A tough customer and a man who thumps on tables, utterly lacking in tact, he is the man chosen by the Bureau to rebuild their army's spirit after the failure at Cranagan and the arrest of General Vult for treason.

Micheal Wittman: Veteran Mage Specialist. Partnered with Kate Sentri, Micheal forms a brake on some of her more dangerous moments of eagerness.

I was thinking of saving this until the summer, when my second book would be published, but I decided I can't wait. ^_^;; Here are the summaries of the new characters who'll be showing up in my second book, The Return of Mephistopheles. I hope y'all enjoy reading about them as much as I did coming up with them. :)

Anna. She's a particularly strong psychic vampire who has a rivalry with Max, as they hail from rival clans (Max is from the martial Silver Wolf Clan, and Anna is from the psychically-gifted Bronze Elephant Clan). They like to try to one-up each other over the course of the adventure, but without giving too much away, they come to work together.

Jack. Like Max, he's also based on one of my real-life friends. He's a soldier in the Marine Corp.

Bob. One of my fellow ghosts. He was a sheriff who moonlighted as a paranormal investigator in his mortal life, and now uses those skills to fight demons.

Michael Hunter. He was also a soldier in the Marine Corp in his mortal life; he even got up to Master Sergeant. Michael is very cynical and sarcastic. And the sad part is his cynicism and sarcasm isn't Actually Pretty Funny like Rattrap nor is it endearing like Dr. McCoy. Though he is a good Knight in Sour Armor.

Anne-Marie Magaña. She's a very beautiful and fun-loving ghost; she was even a fashion model in her mortal life. She enjoys fashion, sweet treats, and fire magic. Of course, she knows she has a responsibility to fight demons as well, but she likes to have fun while doing it.

Ashur Younan. He was once a scientist in his mortal life. Ashur was a practical man who didn't give much thought to supernatural stuff. So imagine his surprise when he became a ghost. As the oldest member of the team, he tries to be the responsible one. He can summon all sorts of animal companions to his side.

Ruby. The youngest member of the team. In her mortal life, she was a very skilled and agile martial artist, and this has carried over into her new ghostly life, as she enjoys ninja-style attacks. She is fun and energetic, but she has a personal reason for fighting demons as well, as one of them tragically murdered her mother.

Lily. She is a very cool combination; an angel and a princess. She was created with the Disney Princesses in mind. Well, except for the anti-demon powers.

I assume it's from one work, I'll just post the four named Characters that have so far been in the story;

  • Marty A member of The Mafia, part of the Gallo family. Bit of a Drunkard. Best Friend of Anthony.
  • Anthony Another Member of the Gallo family, Casanova Wannabe, Killed in the prologue, Apparently a capable fighter. His murder is what sets the story in motion.
  • Derrick A detective for the local police department, quite The Stoic sometimes.
  • Augustus Derrick's partner, helps him with cases. Quite Upper Class, was undercover working for the Gallo Family once, didn't take the oath due to lack of Italian ancestry.

It's a short list, but It'll probably expand when I include suspects and higher-ups, and also fully develop the existing characters. Also, it's a story with two protagonists, it's viewed from different perspectives throughout the book.

I have a lot of characters, but I’ll only show four to keep it small and simple.

Ethan Fourthorn: A young teen with a big imagination. He gets into daydreams often. He lived in his hometown, but had to move out for a while.

Katrina “Yuki” White: Ethan’s friend. She’s a Cloud Cuckoo Lander Meganekko with rainbow-colored streaks in her hair. She also paints her face everyday and has about 150 different designs.

Tina Wei-Moote: The Gamer Girl of the bunch. She has pink hair, and wears glasses. She also wears sandals all year long, due to her dislike of shoes. You can guess by her last name her favorite gaming company.

Maxwell Spitz: The Otaku. He likes magna and anime. Especially shojo anime/magna. He gets in some deep doo-doo involving the Libby, and Ethan and Yuki have to bail him out.

I also have some more, including a tsundere hippie, a girl inspired by the Heidi Bowl, a Hikikomori who’s a fan of sewing, a cute bruiser perky goth girl, among others…

  • Robin Garrett: The main villain of a later New Dawn book, I could describe him as basically Light Yagami, if instead of a Death Note, he got a power that could make people explode and other nasty stuff. While he retains the "ego" of Light, he is not as overt about it. Before he obtained the Spell Core, he was a simple college student who lived a life which really should have been exciting, but which became incredibly boring for him and brought about frustration because he felt that even though he furthered his education, there would be little he could do to change the world or end the political corruption which resulted in the ruin of his father's career. As soon as he received magic, he knew what he was going to do with it: "Purify the corruption of the world, raze the corrupt, and watch as a world burned."

  • Mr. Gein: Yes, the resurrected corpse of Ed Gein. Not a zombie, technically a Lich. His Spell Core, Soul Miser, lets him turn things into his phylactery and give him back up phylacteries to transfer his soul into if one gets destroyed. Yes, he can turn a living human into his phylactery. He had been reanimated for a while, brought back by the Gibbs Coven as an experiment. He was one of the first people to join Robin's group.

  • Jackie Rubio: The third serial killer to join Robin's group, and the one I tell you the least about. He used to be a differently named character.

Well, I thought I'd throw my main protagonists for my story "Nothing Shining Anywhere" (working title) out there. Since it's late, I'll probably post the other major characters another time.

Whiteout: The main protagonist, a 16 year old who can absorb various forms of energy through his hands and feet and, after the time-skip, ONLY his feet, and use it as either a projectile weapon, or as a means of greatly enhancing his physical strength and speed. While he dislikes his power, mainly because he is unable to turn it off, he was trained and forced to fight crime until he turns 18, when he is old enough to opt for a power-surpressing injection and lead a normal life. While he dislikes interacting with most of his Muggle superiors, through his service he developed a strong sense of duty, and tends to get along better with other superheroes, eventually gathering a small team around him. He also looks up to the supposed Big Good of the story, Stronghold. He gets involved in Edward's plot to take over immerse in a horrifying Lovecraftian dimension the world under the impression that his team is simply protecting the mayor. He's sorely mistaken. After Stronghold is murdered, post-timeskip Whiteout declines the injection, intent on stopping Edward Book from erasing all reality and getting Corona to return.

Corona (formerly Agni): The Lancer of Whiteout's team, a powerful 16 year old pyrokinetic. While Whiteout more or less had to "grow into" being a superhero, coming from a formerly Muggle family, she comes from a long line of supers (such as her sister, Heat Death, who is engaged with Stronghold at the start of the story), and is far more enthusiastic about fighting. In fact, her temper and eagerness to fight is sometimes a liability for the team, causing them to get caught in more battles than necessary. However, because of her control over her own abilities and Whiteout's ability to keep her flames in check, they are often able to turn potentially catastrophic situations into decisive victories, a quality that Stronghold's team often praises the team for. Regardless of whether her team is beating the enemy to a pulp or desperately fighting for even ground, she usually keeps a positive attitude, although the quality of her smile may vary. While she has strong feelings for Whiteout, his usually detached demeanor convinced her to wait for the right moment to confess her feelings, which turns out to be a horrible moment for both of them: specifically, during the chaos following Edward's assault and murder of Stronghold, Edward approaches her and convinces her to come with him in order to keep Whiteout safe. She later fights him and her sister, defeating them both and pleading with Whiteout to give up. When he refuses, she cauterizes his hands in an attempt to seal his powers. Afterwards, she continues to fight under Edward in an attempt to get Whiteout to give up, unaware of Edward Book's true motives.

Coal: The Big Guy and all-round Mighty Glacier of the group, 19 year-old Jesse Coleman is a former teen bandit with the ability to transform his body, and others' as well, into whatever material he makes contact with and is also able to "soften up" harder materials by reversing his powers. Originally on the run for not registering himself as a superhuman, he resorted to a life of crime as a Gentleman Thief: robbing banks while holding a pistol and wearing several iron rings (in case the pistol got shot from his hands). He prided himself on never firing a single shot. However, once he encountered Whiteout while robbing from a bank in his jurisdiction, the two developed a rivalry, slowly cumulating from a simple cop/robber relationship to the point where Coleman simply revealed his presence before waiting for Whiteout to arrive. Gradually, it changed from a rivalry to a competition, and after many, many encounters, Whiteout finally prevailed. Coal was then allowed to join the team at Whiteout's demand instead of being de-powered and incarcerated. Coal willingly accepted. While he's not as gung-ho as Corona, he can be best described as the red oni to Whiteout's blue. Despite what his powers would suggest, he's ridiculously agile, using parkour for fleeing or positioning himself to drop onto enemies from above. Pre-timeskip, he's only slightly less enthusiastic about crime-fighting than Corona. Post-timeskip, he's ready to leave it all behind, remaining on the team only because he's too proud to let Whiteout outlast him. While he's always supportive of Whiteout, he secretly believes that nothing will convince Corona to return.

Jabberwock: A 15 year old who can manipulate the size of any objects in her field of vision as well as herself, thanks to a symbiotic Eldritch Abomination that took up residence in her skull/subconscious. The newest member of the team, she's somewhat disillusioned to find that being a superhero isn't all fun and games, but the blow is softened by her Cloud Cuckoo Lander tendencies caused by the abomination. While she's extremely quirky, she's also highly intelligent and knowledgeable about many different aspects of psychology and biology, most of which she understands on a seemingly instinctual level due to the abomination's conscious intersecting with her own. In battle, although she could potentially take most opponents down very, very quickly and attempts to during the final pre-timeskip battle with Edward Book she usually stands back and uses her powers to either aid her teammates or hinder the enemy. However, while under extreme emotional or mental duress, the abomination awakens and "hijacks" her body to varying extents, depending on the situation, with the intent of annihilating whatever is causing it. Because she is interested in Whiteout almost as much as Corona—a fact she recognizes—the abomination's influence manifests itself in little ways at first, such as accidentally halving Corona's height, but later bypasses Jabberwock's powers and just goes in for a telepathic counterattack. While she comes to see Corona as a sort of arch-rival, she sees Coal as a good friend, despite the fact that he finds her combination of lapses and her Cloud Cuckoo Lander-ness extremely unsettling at times. After the time skip, she made an effort to tame the abomination in order to maintain better control of herself, and to utilize other abilities it possessed. She succeeded. Incredibly jaded and bitter after the battle against Edward Book, the only thing keeping her from attempting to shatter Corona's mind outright is Whiteout's desire to save her.
