I got a question: What is the definition of "old-school", as in the trope name? WW1? WW2? Vietnam? Current?
Depending on which one, some terrestrial examples of this trope can exist, and some real life ones, if the right definition is used. Too many posts to read, but did you think about that yet?
"Old school" refers to dogfighting at all, basically. If you're launching missiles at each other from beyond visual range, it's not old school dogfighting. If you're firing all-aspect missiles from any which way and letting them do the hard work of actually hitting your target, then that's not old school dogfighting. If you're Chasing Your Tail in order to get behind them and then fire a missile, that does count as old school dogfighting.
Unfortunately, none of the crowner results, as far as I can tell, have been implemented. I can definitely blank Old-School Dogfighting in preparation for the new trope, and put what's in there into Space Dogfighting (as long as someone tells me how).
Is the Space Dogfighting sandbox still operational? Has anyone YKTTW'ed Space Is Air?
Hey, was it ever brought up that this trope has suffered big-time Trope Decay?
The original YTTKW for Old-School Dogfighting by Haibane was about starfighter combat almost always happening within visual range, and almost never with any missiles.
I'm way too late for this discussion, but I figured it should be noted what the trope initially was about.
It had been brought up, and it was also determined that the most probable reason for that is that 1) there's no real link between the trope's current name and the "space fighter" aspect, and 2) we have yet another case of Missing Supertrope Syndrome.
Well, the sandbox pages I had from back in this post are gone now, but I suppose I can type up a new description for Old-School Dogfighting. One question I have though, is Space Dogfight distinct enough from Space Is Air and Old-School Dogfighting to warrant its own trope? It just seems to be "old school dogfighting and space is air at the same time".
And while I'm thinking about it, it might be a good idea to change the name to just Old-School Dogfight to make it more sentence-friendly.
