Yeah, that's not a very good picture.
I like your first image. It pretty much has it all.
It does not matter who I am. What matters is, who will you become? - motto of Omsk BirdGirl Genius is the first thing that comes to mind, but I'll admit to not being familiar with the X Punk genres to know if that counts or not.
Fight smart, not fair. That comic falls under Gaslamp Fantasy more (it even named that genre).
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I believe the primary distinction between Steampunk and Gaslamp Fantasy is whether or not magic is involved. (On that note, withdrawing the dragon.)

Don't put the entire image addresses as link text. It just screws up the formatting. This is actually the reason we have pothole formatting.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I think a city-scape might cover it rather well. Gears and steam engines and airships and such. Maybe a frame from Steamboy?

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.I can't clearly tell that anything in there fits aside from the fins on the airships.
Here is that first one:

I like the girl from 8.
I am in support of a frame from Steamboy, possibly one showing the full tower?
When I saw that this thread had gotten a reply, I thought about Steamboy...if we can find something good from that, that would be great.
I think The Other Wiki might have beaten us here.◊

This signature can be dramatically improved by reading it in Logan Cunningham's voice. How about this?
I don't like the Verne-Wells picture one bit. For one, the writing on top is bloody impossible to read.
For another, and more importantly, the ray guns and helmets make it look like Fallout-style retro futurism, not steampunk.
When I think of steampunk, I think of clockwork.

That's Clock Punk that uses clockwork.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I agree that the current image is not actually funny. The image in post 9 would work better.
I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!I like Verne and Wells. The retro glass helmets and uniform-like space suits give off a very 19th century vibe to me.
It does not matter who I am. What matters is, who will you become? - motto of Omsk BirdFound a funny Sesame Street one.◊
Also, I found a My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic one◊,
Can't find any safe websites without the shirts, though.

Always hiding my keys in the bug bucket, you bastard dog.Okay, wait. This guy's fucking awesome.◊
Always hiding my keys in the bug bucket, you bastard dog.Indeed he is.
Moon◊That's like a jillion times more steampunk than the current "image".
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. Is it time for a crowner? I don't see enough consensus on a single image.
The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything.

This is a repurposed Demotivator◊. I think it's not clear or witty.
A good image should feel◊ right◊*, maybe show "airships and giant robots powered by steam".
* note: would need permission for second, and judging by the page it's from, may not get it
