Yes, he is.
No, they don't need to go through hell. They need to spend effort in some way and have a real motivation. Not all conflict is necessarily "evil" or "suffering" (see other things that involve training, for example).

True Art tropes may be pretentious but they are not anti-intellectual if anything their intellectuals being pompous about what they feel is the highest and most intellectual form of art.

I think Flyboy meant that the True Art pages at this very Wiki are anti-intellectual.
As for the trope, I agree with what Teraus said. It's perfectly possible to have an excellent story with no angst.

Can anyone link me to what Linkara about the 'True Art is Angsty' trope? I know that you not gonna burst into flames the minute you walk outside but sometimes I think about how I got it easy compared to some people who had experienced the even worst tragedies in their lives and are better off because of it.
