Lacuna: Demons of the Void for Kindle. I had a blast writing it, and I gotta credit TV Tropes for basically giving me the tools to do so. Accordingly there are lots of shout-outs to various tropes and TV Tropes itself in it.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/Lacuna

Tropes page created already.

Book itself is available here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006RZNR3Y/

It's got a fairly generous preview so you can check out the beginning for free. If you don't have a Kindle, you can download the free app for PC/Mac, or iPhone, or Android phone, or any device really from here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=kcp_ipad_mkt_lnd?docId=1000493771

I hope other Tropers enjoy reading it (and tropifying the page) as much as I enjoyed writing it. :D

Oh, just to celebrate the book's Tropes page creation, I made it 100% free for the 10th of January. So there's no excuse now. :D

So, I just downloaded my free copy. Actually makes me feel kind of bad — I'll see if I can buy a second copy later, given that it's only three dollars. My friend's thinking about checking it out as well.

I'll tell you what I think. And well done — however good it is, it's a)inspiring and b)an accomplishment. I'm uber jealous over here even if the book isn't the next Nam Lee.

Edit: I none-too-subtle criticism of the American War On Terror, I see. I'm super amused that you're taking the usual tropes of five-minute-into-the-future sci-fi and applying them to Australia. The land that sci-fi forgot. Female Prime Minister, nice, nice. I'm on the look out for zeplins! :D

Haha, thank you! And sure. It's free for a day, so if you feel it's worth three of your Earth dollars, just delete it and redownload it tomorrow. My pet cat thanks you! (Her name is Fall and she is very cute).

I wanted to write a SF novel that didn't feature Americans as the stars. Not because I have anything against Americans, but it's just that I wanted to do something different. I also wanted to make a big point of China's involvement, simply because of their increasing focus on space and because they're always so under-represented in SF despite their vast population.

I mean... Chinese people account for about 1/4 of the Earth's peoples, but in all of Star Trek the Token Asian is always either Japanese (Sulu, Reboot!Sulu, Hoshi) or Korean (Kim). There's not (to my knowledge) even a background character that's explicitly Chinese. It Just Bugs Me...

Anyhoo, At least they are gracious enough to allow me the preview. And it's a generous preview, so I will read that and get back to you on that.

And I am very happy that yet another troper managed to become self published! It's a matter of pride!

Damn. :(

But, yeah. That's rough. As an Australian I know the pain of "Your region cannot have this, for no apparent reason." Curse you Netflix!

Sorry mate!

Just downloaded it. Will read it soon and share my thoughts after I'm done.

I'll try to pay for it later, but I don't have a credit or debit card, so that's likely not going to happen. I really am sorry.

Thank you! And don't stress about it. ;) It's free today, you don't have to pay later at all...! Just read and enjoy. :)

If you really think it's worth something, well, something much more valuable than a single purchase is a genuinely honest book review. That includes the bits you didn't like, or thought could be better. It's important that you be honest like that; people can smell a fake/biased review a mile away. :)

Again, no obligation to do any of those things, since the book is 100% free. :D

I do plan on doing a review if I can get around to it.

Not sure if I'll post it on the Kindle page or here, though. And don't expect it to actually be structured. I will likely jump from point to point randomly.

As long as the review is fair and honest, I don't mind at all. :) And if you could stick it on the Kindle page that would be super cool! My pet cat will be very pleased!

sasayaki, I have created a thread that might effect you, and I suggest you (and all other tropers) visit and provide their viewpoint.

I saw this thread and got the book for my Kindle Touch. I'll check back here when I finish reading it and drop a review on Amazon.

It's funny, when I went to the Amazon website to get it for my Kindle, it said it was $4.99 and on my Kindle it says $0...is it still supposed to be free?

Finally got around to writing my review nn Amazon. I gave it four stars and summarize my main criticisms here:

  • Most of the tech seemed believable to me, with the exception of the Reactionless Drive. I get that it's a shout-out to TV Tropes, but an attempt at an explanation or no explanation or mention at all would've been better.
  • The shout-outs in the beginning were a bit heavy-handed. After they get to outer space and Saara joins, they're worked into the story much better.
  • Sheng. Did he have to be such an obvious villain? He had some legitimate points to raise despite being such a bastard, and keeping him would've been great for character development.

Overall, I did like the book and gave it 4/5. The above points bothered me though. The reference to the modern Arab-Israeli conflict was hilarious and I enjoyed Summer's character once the character fleshing-out kicked in. I'll definitely be on the look-out for a sequel if one is planned. And while I didn't appreciate the twist at the end since it was obvious and some precautions should have been taken, it does set up a sequel.

I'm one of those jerks that got a free copy and then never posted anything, but this book was actually pretty good. It's not perfect, but it's fun, and it's not random that it was posted here. You can feel the love for Tvtropes.

It looks like the second book is out, along with some short stories. Has anyone read them?
