Yes. Three days. Thirty votes without a single dissenting opinion. Calling the crowner.
I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.White Elephant, as a preexisting and (in my experience) reasonably common term, should be considered. Perhaps White Elephant Gift, White Elephant Plot, or some variation.
It has no connection to this trope.
Yeah, unwritten rule number one: follow all the unwritten procedures. - CamacanAs a variation of one of the above, Saddled With An Unwanted Gift?

My Games & WritingSo, correct me if I'm wrong, this trope is about "a gift that you can't complain about it since it's a gift"?
How about... Gift Horse?

No, it's a plot based on that premise.
A "white elephant gift" might be good or bad. This is bad only.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Given the support for a rename, there is now an alternative titles crowner for this trope here. Feel free to add names you see fit.
"irhgT nm0w tehre might b ea lotof th1nmgs i dont udarstannd, ubt oim ujst goinjg to keepfollowing this pazth i belieove iN !!!!!1 dGawdy Gift Fake Smile perhaps. I would say that the Home Improvement example shows that it isn't necessarily a plot trope, it was just a gag of Jill faking delight over a half-gallon bottle of perfume. "Oh it tingles... and burns!"
"Gaudy", tho.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Hmm, learn something new everyday. I always thought it was spelled Gawdy but after a quick google search it seems Gaudy is more modern but Gawdy is an accepted (though archaic) variant. In the interest of appeasing grammer/spelling nazi's, should probably stay with the modern version.
Almost every single major dictionary either doesn't give that spelling at all, or lists it as "archaic", which does not mean "accepted".
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Bumping this to get more votes.
Bumping again. I think that Stuck With The Unwanted Gift is a better name than the current leading option, Unwanted Gift Plot, because it is more descriptive and tells you more about the trope.
Still need consensus here.
I'm going to keep bumping this thread until we get consensus.
The two leading options right now are Stuck With The Unwanted Gift and Unwanted Gift Plot. I'm okay with either. I think I prefer Stuck With The Unwanted Gift, though.
Rhymes with "Protracted."Still no consensus.
We don't need a strict 2:1 on an alt names crowner, but I would like a couple more votes.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickBump. It's now time for the crowner call, isn't it?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanRename is done. All wicks are changed. Stuck With The Unwanted Gift and the pre-existing term White Elephant are now redirects. Added a note to Renamed Tropes linking back to this thread. No subpages to move, but there is a discussion page with archived discussion that should be hooked to the new location.
I've also added a laconic, which is hopefully a decent summary, and folderized the previously-unsorted examples section.

I take it we can call this Crowner right?
