Some help with a Mons idea

Let me start with information on the things I don't need help with:

  • The idea is that all the Mons are based of beings in the Cthulhu Mythos
  • A handler can only have 2 Mons per individual, anymore and there's a risk of going insane
  • It's supposed to be based primarily off of Pokemon
  • I have things like locations, towns, and other aspects of the setting set up

The things I do need help with:

  • A type list, it's based of Pokemon, so it's necessary.
  • Some ways to name the Mons
  • Some design ideas for the Mons
  • Help with working in the combat aspect
  • Making it a mix of a Type I and Type IV Mon genre (I like to do this, because it seems like a more logical and slightly more realistic way to do a Mon work)
  • Some kind of loose canon ideas.

It isn't anything I intend to publish, it's merely something for a forum I am on, I just need help with some things. All I ask, that if you do check this thread out, please offer some assistance or advice.

EDIT: A poster brought up a point, so I have decided to clarify what I already have, which is pretty much the setting for now.

Being based on Pokemon, the setting is called a region, and is named the Arkham Region, with names of cities and towns referencing the Cthulhu Mythos. Some areas include the Alhazred Desert and a seaside town named Innsmouth.

In terms of other areas, they are quite many to list, so I still need help.

Have you seen this?

It's beautiful and so full of deep imagery that it doesn't surprise me to find that it has gone WAY over your head

[up] Facepalm

Unfortunately, yes I have, however it isn't something I intend to publish, just something for forum, so it isn't the same. I need actually help, not links to completely irrelevant things.

Sorry if that seems rude, but I do need actually help

Well, then loot it liberally for ideas. I was linking it as a suggestion, not as a "OMG U R SO UNORIGINAL DOOD". S. John Ross isn't going to come to your house and beat you up.

It would help to know what you've already got.

Common types: water, fire, earth, wind, electricity

It's so weird for pokemon to have dragon and bug listed as types...

Will grand, abstract elements like time or space work?

[up][up] actually, for something based of Yog-Sothoth, that does help.

[up] that would help for something based off Vulthoom

Well, the Chinese elements did have wood.

And it's associated with wind, which contradicts the existing elements.

^ Wood as an element distinct from wind and earth appears in multiple series, and many places, and is pulled off quite nicely. It works and fills a niche unprovided by earth itself (which can be pretty awesome, even when just encompassing rocks and the ground. Earthquakes, landslides, mudslides, boulders...)

Metal, too, allows to fill for spots unprovided by current elements, while leaving plenty of room for them. Earth can have a rich and bountiful supply of inspiration, even when separated from Wood and Metal.

Also, if using Time and Space, may I suggest Fate and/or Chance?

[up] Well, the Mons are based on Cthulhu Mythos beings, I don't think it really applies, but it is an excellent suggestion.

Are you going to have tiers?

How about you name them by taking a Pokemon being, and a Mythos being (perhaps related ones), and make a Portmanteau? For example, Azathoth + Arceus = Arcethoth.

At first I didn't realize I needed all this stuff...

[up] The naming is similar to pokemon, in that the name's combined from two separate words or derived from one. I don't know what you mean by tiers.

I thought tiers were a fairly integral part of Mons design? As well as being divided into Types, Mons are often divided into Tiers (though the Tiers are not explicitly stated). A tier tells you roughly how powerful a Mon is. In Pokemon, the highest tier is Legendary (I think, I'm not that familiar with Pokemon).

[up] Hmm, well I've read up on Mons idea, Tiers never really came across though.

The only tiers I've heard of for Pokemon are the fan-decided ones based on how much use they see in competitive. Probably not something you an plan for there. "Legendary" isn't so much a tier as it is a classification of sorts for powerful Pokemon that you only get one of (barring trading) and which figure into the myths and legends of the Pokemon world.

I couldn't conceive a dream so wet; your bongos make me congo.
