We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.
Open sections with inactive heralds:
- Betsyandthe Five Avengers — World Building
- Ori Doodle — Old Folks Home
- Cyto Zytokine — New Media
- Totemic Hero — Webcomics
- JHM — Music
- Parable — On-Topic Conversations

Wiki Talk is one forum about talking about the Wiki and Forum proper. Our goal is to make improvements upon it through discussion and ideas.
There are quite a few threads in Wiki Talk. These include "Please Unlock a locked, cut page(not a member of the Permanent Redlinkclub)", "Screwed up Custom Titles to Fix", "Get Help with English Here", and others. Many of them are to help you with things, improve the wiki, discuss major changes to the wiki, or to talk about current wiki problems that may come up.
The first topic mentioned is about unlocking pages that have been locked, then transferring the data over to a new page, and cutting the old, outdated one. The next one is when Custom Titles go haywire. Reporting which ones cause problems allows the staff to find why it's not working and fix it. Finally, the English thread is for users who do not have English as their first language or are not good at it. The goal is to help improve their English so the entire wiki and fora is easier for everyone to read. Many other topics will appear with various improvements upon the wiki, staff, and fora much like these.
If you have a specific problem with someone causing trouble, please report it on Ask The Tropers. You can also asking about glitches, coding help, and other general questions that may come up. As usual, please follow the Forum Rules listed. I wish you a great time visiting and posting on this forum.
Have a nice day. ~Hydronix

Quest 64 threadI'd be happy to help for the TRS subforum, assuming Shima doesn't take the job. I don't want to step on her toes here, she just said she was swamped, so...
I'd apply for a TRS or IP job, but I don't know if "welcomer" is a good fit, I have been told I'm a bit gruff. I'm open for pm's asking questions though.
Fight smart, not fair.I wuv Forum Herald (yes I admit I proposed it, but that's because of this, not viceversa) because it uses Herald as a trope in a pretty interesting way. "Behold, newcomer, this Call to Adventure, new lands to explore and yadda yadda!"
Fanfic Recs orwellianretcon'd: cutlocked for committee or for Google?I really don't mind answering questions and I do a lot of that as is. I just can not do it all on my own with everything else. If I could be like back-up greeter, that would rock. Of the two of you, you're both awesome, but I think Discar is less abrasive on newbies. No offense. Deboss is an acquired taste,

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickOut of curiosity, what will our badges look like? And will mods be getting badges too? I feel they deserve them.
some suggestions
- Color in avatar boxes
- Admins: Gold
- Mods: Pink/Red (the same color modhat posts are, but just the avvie box)
- Friendly Native Guides: Green (since green is a soothing color and makes people look friendlier)
- some sort of icon either under the avatar box or in the post header.

go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagineJust FYI On the bottom of the conversation list for each subforum, there is now a link for showing new posters in the subforum who have not yet been welcomed.
I'm working on the welcomebot now.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyYou mean this whatsit right?
Should I start my duties ASAP, or should I wait?
go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagineI'm ready, well, if I got the job, of course.
Quest 64 threadCan I assume that I'm within my rights to tell people to not crack jokes about other parts of the forum? If not, I can delete that post, it only occurred to me afterward that I might be overstepping my bounds.
For the record, I did so because I don't want people to think that the "jokes" being made there are serious, and subsequently be driven away.

go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagineYou have my full support. We've had complaints about that kind of thing before, elsewhere in YF.

Wait, a bot is doing the greetings? That's really cool.

"Dr. Strangeloid, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Cleanlink" - thespacephantomNo, the bot is sending data to a sheet for us Guides to look at.
At least I think so.
Bobby: Thank you. Also, do you think it's pretentious to now consider myself part of the staff? (Though obviously I am a rung lower than your moderators and such, but that's neither here nor there) I just want to know if that's proper or not.

go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagineProbably would be a good idea to say how high we are on the staff if at all. We don't want to do something that's not within our power, after all. I mean, I know we can't thump, but we can ask them to cool down, I guess.
Quest 64 threadnevermind.

go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagineWhy would it matter?
"Dr. Strangeloid, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Cleanlink" - thespacephantomI suppose it really doesn't, now that you mention it.
go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagineWell, you've been officially appointed, haven't you?
There isn't really a formal staff ranking. Aside from Eddie, only the mods can view hollers, and all mods can lock threads; cutmasters do not outrank other mods. Willbyr and Shimaspawn are IP and TRS maintenance engineers, not mods as such.
I'm not sure what the scope of your duties is; best to wait for Eddie on that one.
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffIndeed.
Blackcat said she found nothing wrong with what I said (she said that overstepping my boundaries would be "pretending to be a mod", and I'm well aware that I'm not), so I think I've got a somewhat better idea of what I'm supposed to be doing now.
Otherwise, I'm just waiting for the first newbie to roll in so I can smother them in love and politeness.
go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagineI've volunteered for the Special Efforts forum (no idea if I've gotten it yet), but here's the message I've drafted:
Special Efforts is the place to organize and participate in large-scale efforts to improve the wiki, such as wick moving (after renames or namespace migrations), wick cleaning (removing misuse), and page cleaning (removing natter, correcting formatting, moving misplaced elements onto their proper subpages, etc.). Our goal is to keep the wiki looking nice and functioning smoothly.
The stickied threads (the ones at the top that have the image of a note pinned to a board next to them) are for fixing ongoing, wiki-wide problems: cutting natter (NATTER ALERT!); moving works pages and their wicks from Main/ to the appropriate namespace (Wick Migration); fixing pages which have major grammar and spelling problems (Calling all Grammar police!); general page cleanup, such as removing complaining or reverting vandalism (Cleanup help needed); and removing complaining from Headscratchers pages (The Great Headscratchers Complaining Clean-up). If you have time to spare, take a look at these threads; there's always work to be done in them. If, in your wanderings across the wiki, you encounter a page which needs cleanup in one of the aforementioned ways, but you don't have the time or knowledge to do it yourself, post a link and an explanation in the appropriate thread so that the problem can be fixed.
Two other significant threads are the Regarding the Trivia namespace thread, which works to identify which pages should be classified as trivia, and the Trope Description Improvement Drive thread, which tries to improve unclear, digressive, or overly long trope descriptions. (The Trope Description Improvement Drive thread functions in the same way as the stickied threads: if you see a problem description and can't or don't feel qualified to fix it, post about it.) The remaining threads deal with specific cleanup efforts.
Before getting started, I would recommend reading Text-Formatting Rules, Example Indentation, and How To Alphabetize Things, as they contain useful information for handling some of the more technical parts of improving the wiki. Welcome To TV Tropes also contains a lot of useful information, and has a lot of links to pages with more detailed information.
If, in the course of your cleanup, you come across a locked page which needs something fixed, add a post to this thread requesting the needed change. If a thread, a page, or a post needs some other sort of mod attention, use the yellow button (called the Holler button) which can be found at the top of each post.
This forum follows the general forum rules. If you want to rename a trope or think the description or definition needs sigificant revision, post in the Trope Repair Shop (TRS). If you are having problems with a specific troper, report the situation either by hitting the Holler button or by posting in Ask The Tropers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or any of the other staff.
Thank you for your help, and have a nice day!
Let me know if you see any issues with it.

If I can, I would like to volunteer for the Video Game subforum. Here's the basic draft I made:
Video Games is the place where we, well, talk about video games. It does not matter whether that game is "hardcore" or "casual", mainstream or niche, good or bad; if it's a video game, then it's all good to talk about. Our goal is a simple one: talk about video games, and having fun while doing it.
Now, do not take this to mean that anything goes here. Besides the general rules of the forum, there are three guidelines that you should follow if you want to have a good time with no problems:
1) No Complaint Threads: By this, we don't mean that you are forbidden from raising any issues towards any game in any thread altogether. We mean that you should refrain from threads whose only purpose is to complain about something you don't like. As our past experience with threads of this sort has shown, they have a tendency to incite flame wars and, generally, invite an unfriendly air to them, which goes against our goal.
2) No Fanboyish Behavior: By this, we mean that stuff like arguing and whining over which consoles you play your games on and why the consoles you oppose aren't up to snuff are not allowed. This ties in with Guideline #1, in that they generally go against our goal, incite thread-derailing flame wars and, frankly, they are just eyesores to read. So, yeah, kindly refrain from doing this.
3) Behave Yourself: By this, we mean that, well, you should be on your best behavior. If someone posts something about a game that you don't agree with, you should either address your concerns with it in a pleasant manner, or just be the better man and ignore it altogether. If you are having problems with a specific troper, report the situation either by hitting the Holler button or by posting in Ask The Tropers.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or any of the mods. Do not be afraid to ask.
Thank you for your help, have fun, and have a nice day!
Do let me know if there's anything I should elaborate on.
Edit: Fixed redlink for pothole. Thanks, Nocturna.
