Don't idealise romantic partners, and learn to let things go.
Scepticism and doubt lead to study and investigation, and investigation is the beginning of wisdom. - Clarence DarrowZooey Deschanel would make a terrible girlfriend.

Love is blind, especially if you think your reflection looks like Han Solo.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.Love Hurts. And, only having dreams and idealising the world and complaining the day you realise reality doesn't agree is bound to bring you pain. Better option: keep dreaming. Stay romantic. But also learn to look at the world for what it is - and the people in it as well.
Remember what Paul, Tom's friend says about his girlfriend: "Robin is better than the girl of my dreams... She's real."
Change, my dear, and not a moment too soon.Wow... all very good answers!
I was fearing everyone would go "SUMMER'S A SLUT WHORE!"
There are two good answers, you mean.
Wait, really? Because I was being facetious.
Ok, not ALL good. But still better than "SUMMER IZ A HEARTLESS WHORE!"
Serious answer: The film is a deconstruction of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, showing that this kind of character would not be the perfect girlfriend, and exposing just how much of a wish fulfillment fantasy the trope is.
People actually say that about this movie? Wow, talk about Misaimed Fandom. The whole point is that she's right and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character (whose name I forget) doesn't know what he's doing.
Except for the very end, where the movie completely forgets what the message was supposed to be for the sake of a cheap gag.

Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.500 Days of Summer is great in some parts (expectations vs reality) and an irritating modern indie romantic comedy in others (the all-knowing little girl). Annie Hall is a better movie with a similar message.
Do you want to have sex? I think we should have sex. CASUAL SEX.I find it amusing that I've gone through the plot of this film almost exactly; indeed, I found out about it because the girl in question realised this and told me I should watch it (we ended up as good friends after wards, though it did take a lot before that happy ending was earned). Even better, she has played through the events of the film twice in real life, once as each character.
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.
I would like to debate the themes and messages of 500 Days of Summer.
What do you think was the message?
