Korean building project invokes images of 9/11:

So what do you think? Too Soon? An utterly ignorant or deliberate negligence in the part of the designers? Or a good design that happens to echo an unfortunate image?

Personally, I think the building looks awesome and hope it's completed. If the controversy proves to be too much, I think it could be altered to have several of those "clouds", though that would obviously drive up costs.

Shrug. Asian-pacific aesthetics do not work over here.

Witness the monument to Martin Luther Zedong.

I heard about this on the radio the other day and couldn't fathom how a building design could make you think "9/11!!" within a split second of seeing it. Well... now I can fathom it.

...still looks really awesome.
I'm glad they're doing it, and I hope they don't back down over this.

For one thing, it's an excellent design. Seriously, look at that thing. It's awesome. The concept is a self-contained neighborhood all in one building, so you don't have to ride anything but an elevator to get to a convenience store or whatever. That's great. I'd love to live in something like that. Someone should do something like that in the US. Well, they probably couldn't get away with that exact design, but something similar.

And on another note, 9/11 was a terrorist attack. The goal was to make us think about it. Every time something draws this reaction, the attack gets a little more successful. It's been ten years. It's time to just stop talking about it so much.

[up][up][up] Actually it was a Dutch company that designed this.

[up] The designers have apologized for the design but there isn't any confirmation about whether this will be scrapped (it's the firm's employers' decision):

Actually, that is a pretty cool building. I'd support its construction.

Fact remains, these people live in Korea, and the designers in Holland. They have not been affected by 9/11 the way America has. Maybe Americans see 9/11 in this building, but they probably don't.

While I do see the resemblance to WTC, I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't think it's disrespectful at all.

I think they should build it.

I also hope nothing happens to it when/if it gets built.

Am I missing something? Is there more to the similarity than "two tall rectangular buildings oriented diagonally"?

Apparently the cloud makes it look like the buildings are collapsing, but I don't see it myself.

Won't ANY building which incorporates any kind of rectangular twin skyscrapers resemble the WTC?

This may sound heartless (as I'm aware) but isn't there a point when Too Soon turns into unwillingness to work through the trauma and let it heal? I do see the point of people seeing the similarity and finding it disturbing...just the outrage I'm reading does strike me as somewhat...unhealthy. (First Comment at the first article calls for firing and blacklisting the architect...)

Also...if you see this Building AFTER you have been told it resembles 9/11 WILL make you see the resemblance because you'll watching for it. Its like a trick picture.

The "cloud" part is reminiscient of the billowing smoke and flames coming out the side of one of the building during the attack, and is in many famous pictures of it.

I see the Awesomeness.
I thought they were supposed to look like an explosion or something.

I personally would have gone with a slightly different design, but hey, aesthetic values and all that.

Didn't find the similarity as striking in the above picture but this angle...okay the resemblance is there.

Still, doesn't justify some responses. A moderated response explaining the issues with it and requesting a possible redesign could have been made instead of just interpreting it as an insult. You know...adult behavior.

As an American I do find it a bit unnerving but Koreans and Dutch can do what they want.

I can't really think of a reasonable way to "fix" the design, either, because it's supposed to be a cloud and clouds look a lot like smoke, and I think adding more "cloudness" to it would probably make it worse. However, if one was able to forego the whole cloud idea in the architecture it might be better — more convenient, anyway — to have many bridges attaching the buildings spaced out at many levels (making it 'laddery'? I don't know), but I don't know if that would work.

[up][up] Yes...also a german newssite had a similar article yesterday with some rather...enraged statements, for example a statement that the design was intended to resemble the exploding WTC Towers for publicity.

[up] How about rounding the cloud out? make all the edges smoothly round and "nice"...just as idea.

I was thinking about having multiple clouds sticking out of the buildings, some of them connecting the two. As it is now, the one cloud looks a little like a cancerous tumor.

My main problem is that I don't quite get the purpose of the cloud. It seems impractical, and a waste of space. Surely, there could be a more efficient way to create community space for the inhabitants of the two towers? And since it's still all cubic and stuff I don't think it's that remarkable aesthetically, either...

^It creates a single large area, so all the shops and stuff can be next to each other. That way, if you want to go to three stores, they're nearby, while in the "ladder" version, you might have to go all over the place.

I believe Americans want a pillar, or two pillar. Big honkin' towers.

Not interconnected towers. That ruins the symbolism.

Americans don't believe in interconnectedness?

^^ Now that you put it that way, I can appreciate the practicality of the design even more.

This reminds me of the time when people were raising such a huge unreasonable stink over the fact that people were planning on building a religious/recreational center for the muslim community near ground zero.

^Oh, yeah, that lovely mess.

The worst part about that wasn't the intolerance, but the fact that it wasn't actually anywhere near it.

The multiple ladders idea would yes, make it less convenient if it was a mall, but still, it would make some shops closer to people if they did not live near the cloud. Also, it would give you more places to cross over to visit neighbors than a single crowded mall.
