How to corrupt a character:

Joining the Team.doc
Here are the cheap plot devices I've previously used to make characters evil:

- Brain scrambling machine

- Ear worm creatures that burrow into the host's brain and assume control of their body

- Total personality hacking a la that thing that happened to Bane in The Matrix

- Evil goo

- Evil clones

- Evil cyborg conversion

- Demonic possession

- Alien possession

- Demonic alien possession

- Exploiting a cute and innocent young girl's pure hearted intentions so she ends up single-handedly exterminating the human race

- Evil to begin with and just pretends to be all cute and innocent to fuck with people

- Strategically traumatized by a previous tragedy / someone buying a PS3

- Bitten by a vampire

- Mind control drugs

- Mind control magic

- Being eaten by a plant monster and converted into a half-anime girl, half-plant monster hybrid

Am I missing any, or do I pretty much have all my bases covered?

Yes.

Cultist brainwashing.

watching down on us
  • Grow up in a society with a rigidly-defined social structure or hierarchy, including gender roles. In my stories I've had this lead to neglectful families and abusive parents.

  • Have a troubled childhood full of neglect, or be spoiled as a child. If you grow up in a family that puts emphasis on receiving material possessions and blaming your faults on external things you cannot control, naturally you may grow up to learn these same things.

  • When given power over others, people have a history of abusing it—see the Stanford Prison experiment. While this does not always happen, this is a possible route to corruption.

Grew up as a commoner in one of the crapsackier areas of a Feudal Future, got caught in the fallout of some wars, then found out that he had access to power that is basically godlike in-universe.

I've actually been thinking of reworking that character, because he's awfully similar to Nagato in Naruto (Well-Intentioned Extremist seeking to bring down existing social structure to bring about peace, got traumatized by war as a kid, uses gravity powers, being manipulated by Big Bad but later gets a Heel-Face Turn). The funny thing is I designed the character just about entirely before I had ever gotten far enough in Naruto to know who Nagato was. Annoying synchronicities....

Strategically traumatized by a previous tragedy

This is too rich a source to summarize with just one bullet point, although it works better as "Suffered repeated trauma from a variety of sources, including betrayal by trusted figures."

Though if you just want to complete the list, I'd suggest "Addiction to a rare substance, which can only be obtained unethically (either because the only supplier demands that the addict perform his dirty work, or because the cost of the substance necessitates unethical actions to afford it.)

[down]Yeah, I guess that would work. I think the process of decay is more interesting than the end stage, though—sometimes, it's interesting even if the end stage is never reached—and Horror Hunger usually works quite rapidly.

The exploiting trauma thing is a reference to this, where someone killed our unfortunate heroine's love interest and then someone else forced her to watch his grotesque death scene over and over again to shatter her psyche.

The other thing about someone buying a PS3 is a reference to this.

BEST. PRINCESS. EVER
I've got a character right now who's trying to corrupt the protagonist for his own good. And trust me when I mean that. She tends to go about this by exploiting his tendency to get himself into dangerous and stressful situations of his own free will (a nigh universal "heroic" trait) to get him to "blow off steam" in increasingly questionable ways (starting with heavy drinking and stopping just short of out-right murder in one serious barfight). She's basically hoping to turn him into the ultimate party animal.

[up][up]Whatever they're getting all corrupted about. It's the classic method. And it rings true.

You only mentioned one form of direct psychological manipulation/flaw exploitation. There are so very many.

Misplaced and dependent love is always a fun initiator for gradual ethical disintegration.

Eh, she dabbles in a bit of that too, but not as much as the former.

... Uhh... Saurus, is it just me, or do a disproportionate amount of your stories seem to involve young girls getting Mind Raped?

It does appear unseemly, but I'm not going to Internet Cold Read you on it.

Well, yet.

Would it be less unseemly/weird if I shifted gears from primarily high school age corruption victims to something more along the lines of college aged corruption victims?

Or would it not really matter since I would still come off as a misogynistic pig?

[up]Well, jailbait torture-porn tends, as a rule, to be slightly more skeezy than regular torture-porn, but neither's exactly fantastic as the central theme of your literature.

Well I haven't written anything along the lines of Child Bride yet, so I guess it could be worse.

^^ Even in stories typically considered bad, there's always the possibility of good craft. You seem to focus on Deus ex Machina types of corruption, but very good stories can be produced based on psychologically realistic corruption. Figure out exactly what makes your characters tick, and set up situations such that their existing flaws will lead them to slowly corrupt themselves, and you might manage something genuinely artistic.

Yeah, I already tried doing something like that in Terrible Things Happen to Akane. As I implied in that other thread I made, she doesn't stay corrupted, though (unless you specifically choose the ending where she does).

On a side note, out of all of my skeezy fanfics where young girls get mind raped, which one would you say is the skeeziest?

[up]We'd have to read through them all first. And that's certainly one of the most... interesting attempts at self-promotion I've seen.
