The university's board touted the new policy as a way to keep students safe on campus, stating that it could help prevent incidents like the 2007 shooting at Virgina Tech University that left 33 students dead.

?

I don't think bringing more guns at the hands of people that aren't as capable is the solution...

That aren't as capable as whom? The VT shooter?

I don't think it's ever a bad idea to give people options to protect themselves. Mostly because "please don't shoot me, crazy person" tends to not work...

I don't think guns should be banned completely in general, though in a university I would rather be safe.

I just don't think this will prevent Virgina Tech scenario.

[up]It probably won't prevent such a scenario... But banning guns didn't prevent the action itself, so why not reverse it?

Eh... I don't think weaponry of any kind belongs in certain places, which include hospitals, city halls, police and fire departments, hospitals, and schools.

They should just hire security guards and arm them.

Why couldn't they simply bring back academic fencing?

I agree with the decision, but the reasons are stupid. I don't think you should try to prevent school shootings with policies. They're so rare, and the policies so easy to work around that it doesn't do anything except harm the people least likely to commit an atrocity.

[up]Pretty easily.

And I'd feel much more safe that way, rather than with no one armed in any way save for the person who's intending to commit harm...

I feel safe because I know that they're not going to shoot me. Or I would say that, except that I only have a resonable expectation that they're not going to shoot me.

What I should be saying is that when there's a policy in place I don't feel the least bit more safe.

[up][up][up][up]So to counter guns you brings more guns? While you as an individual that just happened to exercise that choice wisely and got caught in a gun fight might feel safer, I can't say the same for the university as a whole.

There would be more campus news of guns accidentally causing holes in the wall, if not worse. It would also complicate regulations.

Question: There's a shooting on campus going on, and you see someone firing at someone. How do you know if they're the shooter or trying to stop the shooter? After all, in the heat of the moment, you're not necessarily going to have all the relevent info and you could make a fatal mistake.

[up][up][up] The people who are going to shoot you don't care jackshit about some policy. They're going to bring a gun anyways. These things stop school shootings the way SOPA will stop piracy.

Well, if the shooter is shooting into a crowd of unarmed people, chances are, they're the crazy one.

If they're focusing only on someone else armed with a gun, well, it could be that they're trying to take out a crazy.

Choose carefully, the life you end could belong to the crazy or to the good guy, and once the bullet leaves the barrel, you ain't getting it back.

@CDRW OK, but by the same reasoning, if not having a gun-ban policy won't make things safer, then we might as well put the policy in place again. So we're going in circles...?

Clearly there's more than "prevent Virginia Tech" at stake here.

Is it no surprise that Jerry Falwell founded this university? And it's in Virginia (land of Complete Monster Eric Cantor)?

[up][up]Putting the gun ban in place is just more unnesecary policies that confound issues and siphon resources that could go to other things that are actually important.

What resources? It takes more resources to allow but regulate guns, because clearly you're not going to have a complete lack of rules.
