X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

Well if everyone became Mutants then we'd have to hate the Inhumans.

Its only logical.

[up]Well, let's just make everyone inhumans then. Problem solved.

That way, everybody would have to hate everybody.tongue

Not everyone has the mutant gene. Instead of people never having theirs activate everyone with one would. Suddenly mutants goes from being 0.01% of the Earth to 5-10%.

The actual number of mutants has varied really, really heavily. The Powerless arc in the '90s said there were only a few hundred worldwide, but just a couple months later, the Eve of Destruction arc had over 10,000 in a single Genoshan stadium alone. Morrison's run said that the 16,000,000 killed in Genosha were slightly over half the world population, which is as close to an exact figure as I'm aware of.

There are as many mutants as the plot needs there to be.

So I'm on an X-Men kick again. What's worth reading on comixology? So far I have Operation Zero Tolerance, All New Wolverine, and Larry Hama Wolverine on my list.

Simon Spurrier's runs on X-Men Legacy and X-Force are both worth reading. I also really enjoyed Sam Humphries' X-Force, and Dennis Hopeless' Cable & X-Force. Any of Greg Pak's stuff is generally worth reading: Storm, X-Treme X-Men, especially Magneto: Testament.

I've read Legacy before, and I really didn't like it. It was basically an entire run of "superheroes are dumb and don't solve real problems.

It did at least have some positive things to say about mental health.

I remember there was that one X-Force run people like, but I'm kinda sick of X-Force (I even ditched my UXF collection a while back).

EDIT: Oh, is X-Men Gold any good? A back to basics comic with a bunch of characters I like seems good. Ditto for Generation X.

I just read that he's putting Kitty and Colossus back together and blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh no.

Maybe I'll give Gen X a shot.

Speaking of Gen X here's a hard one for you, what are some good Nineties X-Men comics? Not gonna lie, I'm kind of in love with that time period's aesthetic, especially when Joe Mad was drawing them.

It's alright. I like Morph a lot.

Of the various minis I think I liked Gambit and Generation Next the most.

Magneto/Rogue is super creepy.

X-Men Gold has felt completely pointless to me. It's a "back to basics" approach, but what that means is it's a nostalgia-wank-fest. Guggenheim has nothing new to say about anything. He's just rehashing what's come before, with no cleverness or anything unique about it. Just a constant feeling of being something I've read before, but not done as well.

For '90s X-comics: Well, X-Factor, obviously. I thought Nicieza and Lobdell both did a ton of great done-in-ones, between the mandated crossovers and mysteries and shit. X-Man had its charms. X-Force was a bit uneven, but had plenty of good stuff, after Liefeld left. Excalibur, obviously. If I'm honest, I was actually able to enjoy a lot of the '90s comics. There was plenty of enjoyable writing and character stuff, even if a lot of the plots left something to be desired.

Time to dig into Operation Zero Tolerance. 20 bucks for 30 issues isn't a bad deal. Hopefully it's good.

Was gonna try out All New Wolverine but a certain revival killed that interest for me.

As for Nineties comics, I'll probably pick up the four volumes of X-Factor someday. I didn't like the revival but I did generally like what PAD did back in the day.

New X-Books on the other hand, I think I'll just wait for Gen X.

[up] I'd say All-New Wolverine is still worth checking out. It's been a great comic. And hopefully, the revival won't affect the book. I really, really hope Laura gets to continue on her own, doing her own thing, without being overshadowed by the obnoxious fuckwad that Marvel insists on shoving in every single fucking thing they publish.

Whyyyyyyyy.

Wasn't there some preview that had Laura back as X-23? This could be why.

He stayed a Flash.

Dc rebirth was also them admitting that they fucked up. Here marvel said this was their plan all along. But honestly I think Laura will stay as wolverine but OML will go back and die o the way to his home universe

"Wasn't there some preview that had Laura back as X-23? This could be why." The covers for the upcoming Cable arc show Laura in her X-23 outfit, which is a piss-off. Turning her back into X-23 would be a huge mistake. She's not an experiment, she's not a weapon, she's her own person, so let her be more than a number.

[up][up] But Marvel has something of A History with reverting legacies when the originals return. Shit, they're doing it with Sam, changing him back to being Captain America now that Steve's back. The only reason Kate gets away with still being Hawkeye is because of Fraction - I'm pretty sure that if he hadn't used her in his Hawkeye run, she would've been forced to use another name. Bendis got ahead of the game with Riri by starting her off with her own name.

So if Logan comes back, I honestly have no faith in Marvel not to quickly strip the Wolverine title from Laura. And, fuck, probably shove her into a minor team book, or just turn her into a supporting character for Logan.

[up][up]

She's not an experiment, she's not a weapon, she's her own person,

Not if Marvel has anything to say about it. If they think that turning Laura back into what she started as will lure in some old fans and turn a pretty penny, (and keep her from sharing the spotlight with Logan, natch,) then that's what they're gonna do, common sense be damned.
