Whenever I try to write something, it turns out shorter than I intended it to be. It's actually gotten my in trouble a few times.

Anyone else have this problem? Anyone who can offer advice?

1: What's the word count you aim for, and what is the word count you usually get?

2: Practice writing for longer periods of time to get a higher word count. For example, if you don't get enough words when you write for an hour, write for an hour and a half next time.

Depends on what you're writing for. For instance, I had to write an essay on the style of Persepolis, and in less than 1,000 words, I argued my case and provided the minimum number of citations to support it. I needed 1,500 words, so I added another cited case. And another. And another. Ultimately, I had twice as many cited examples as any other essay-writer (and the person who had half as many of me had written 2,500 words.) The teacher was actually quite impressed at how thoroughly I'd made my case, and I got an A.

I actually have this problem as well, at least when it comes to my fanfiction.

Perhaps it would help if you made an outline of what you're going to write so that you know what to include in the essay/story/whatever.

I personally find it difficult to write anything of length if I try to bring it out of my head instead from an outline.
