TVTropes builds a campaign setting!:

Half Human Hybrids

When a Human breeds with the pure specimen of another race, one does not get a mixture, you get a dilution, where some traits are lost and instead show up in some lesser form. For example, how Half-Orc do not go through a Goblin stage but instead faintly mimic the metamorphosis with a long pre-adolescence building up to a rapid puberty.

Half-Sylvan do not stop aging as true Sylvan do. Instead, at some point, between 15 and 45, their aging will suddenly slow by half and then they have approximately, rather then exactly, a hundred years left. Much like pure Sylvan, they know exactly when that slowing has started and near the termination of their lives they will suffer premonitions. Unlike Sylvan, they do not shrink back to 'gnome' size as Sylvan do. Half-Duergar never progress pass the 'gnome' stage, as physical manifestation of their ancestral element refuses to emerge. However, their flesh and blood bodies will grow beyond gnomes and they may keep growing and aging for a long time until literally square-cube law and age takes it toll.

Half-Elfs, scion of Anima Elfs, much like their ancestors, do not show any uniting sign of their heritage except for some long ear or ear-like appendage on their head. They do not have animal speech innately but have animal empathy and are capable of learning the more advanced ability. Half-Dwarfs do not look a single bit like Dwarfs, their Human heritage is more likely to show aesthetically. However, as the Gift inherent to Mortal Dwarfs strikes the rich collective gene of nigh-all humanoids, a new Gift, possibly unique, is liable to emerge. They also will have a monkey tail, even though Dwarfs are more ape-like and have no tail. Half-Brownies tend to be called 'Halflings' by some. They are generally taller then Brownies but still shorter then most humanoids, do not have tails despite Brownies having tails, only half have opposable thumbs on their feet and half have slight agoraphobia for some reason. They are hairy though.

To use OOC terms, a Half-Beastfolk tends to look like Felicia from Darkstalkers and a second generation with more Human will look like a cat girl.

That very last part: Oh hell no. Maybe a second-gen would be closer to Shifers from D&D? Because something that's human with cat ears and a tail, but no fur or other feline features, is something that has aggravated me since the dawn of time.

Also, Sylvan got nixed.

Everything else looks pretty boss, though. I like how you handled that.

I'm going to go with No-half anythings, for now. I like the idea that half-anything is simply human.

It is a human. He's talking about traits manifested on the first-generation jump to being Human. The qualities each race contributes to the Human gene pool, basically. The child of a run-of-the-mill dude and a bipedal badger isn't just going to be a regular dude, after all.

@Exelixi: Sylvan didn't get nixed, some people just said 'Gnome' would no longer be used in them.

Though I dunno when that decision was made.

After looking up Shifters, I'd say they look more like First Generation hybrids, then Felicia, then catgirls.

◥▶◀◤
No no felica not cat girls, If anything the ones later down the line would look something like the Elf-race in Jak and Daxter* but with shorter ears, and maybe have more hair and body hair, but it would be hair not fur. Logically speaking that makes the most sense.

While I agree it makes more logical sense, I believe invoking the associated imagery of the Cat Girl trope to be more important.

◥▶◀◤
That suspends way too much disbelief for me.

I came up with 'first-gen hybrids are catgirls' initially in my head and didn't bother me much. I just felt like extending it out further.

So, hey, how about we actually start an RP and see what can be fleshed out through there?

1086 Sijo, Sat, 25th Feb '12 4:37:06 AM from Puerto Rico
I'm not sure if we're ready for an RP yet, but how about if we try making characters using the data we have eg. Race, class etc? Just to "test" the setting, as it were. (No game system needed.)
Forum talk is just casual talk. It's not a debate you have to win.

We're not remotely ready to start an RP, though we can do character test runs.

The cat girl trope isn't one I've ever liked. My inner biologist screams "Fuck that!" every time one is mentioned. If we're honest with ourselves, it's essentially a fanservice thing, and we don't need those.

The Eight Crystals of Undeniability

Long ago, when the barrier between the Aether and the Material was at its thinnest, the mystic run-off of Celestial gods leaked into the Material and literally crystallized, forming eight semi-sentient Terrestrial Gods in the form of power gems. However, each was mostly powerless without a mortal conduit, hosts to bear within them their power. Six of the eight were called the Crystals of Inevitability, representing aspects of nature that were inevitable truths, and they searched for hosts that had personalities that best fit the ideals they meant to represents.

Red of Inevitable Death choose nihilists, killers, anarchists but also those who may seek to bring comfort in death, Orange the Inevitable Suffering choose sadists and masochists, those who would prophet from the pain of other or try to mitigate it, Yellow the Inevitable Selfishness chooses mercenaries, career criminals and those who might devote themselves to a good cause for selfish reasons Green the Inevitable Life choose healers, guardians and those who would protect a live even at the cost of suffering, Blue the Inevitable Joy chooses hedonists and those who desire to alleviate pain and maximize joy and Violet the Inevitable Selflessness, chooses heroes, martyrs and those who would dedicate themselves

Each crystal bearer of the Inevitable chose of their own free will to take up the mantle and the power, knowing full well that the crystal may influence their decisions, emphasizing the traits that caused it to choose them in the first place.

The last two were the Crystals of Immutability who represented each immutable truths. The Black Crystal of Immutable Fate chose those who were born at the exact moment as the last bearer died, taking over their minds from the crib, overthrowing their free will and turning them into perfect agents of fate. The White Crystal of Immutable Free Will, which actually is more clear then white, chose whoever was closest to their host as they died, someone's whose collective choices led them to be there. While they actually have no choice to host the power of the White Crystal or not, the White Crystal does not have any influence on their thoughts at all and they are free to do with it what they will.

Each of the crystals are sheer raw power, their energy capable of being turned towards any pursuit although their is a tendency of favorship. Red and Purple favor brute force, Blue and Orange quickness, Green and Yellow more awareness and Black and White fine manipulation. They do come with a prepackaged set of increased power of body and mind, energy manipulation in the form of shields and blasts, super speed, flight and regeneration, although they manifest in different ways. IE, for flight, Black and White wraps themselves in their power and lift themselves, Purple and Red push against the air with their feet and walk on air, Blue and Orange launch themselves at high speed and only Green and Yellow can seemingly fly like you'd normally expect.

The crystal bearer will have the Crystal resting inside their body, with most humanoids right around the waist near the bottom of the spine and then growing like a seed all throughout their body with branches of crystal veins everywhere inside and usually uniformly placed 'fruit' that peak outside of their bodies, acting as reservoirs of power and foci of a particular ability. Their eyes will change color and their hair will gain highlights to match their crystal.

The Crystals are though to require those with a latent Gift, submerged but existent in potentia. The Black Crystal often showed up in dwarfen infants, while the Inevitable often chose those past the usual age of a Gift's emergence and White was completely random but known to skip over one potential host despite proximity in favor of another.

[up]Hmm, sounds like the Infinity Gems with some ideas from the Color Entities. I like the concept, but I'm not sure how they fit into the campaign. For example:
  • Are the gods aware of the crystals?
  • Are they part of a larger plan eg. to prove which force is most "inevitable" of all?
  • Or do they just keep a cosmic balance of some sort?
  • What about mortals, is their full story known to them? If so to which people?
  • Are people like Hrod after them?
  • Are all of them in the Old Lands, or are some in the New?
  • What happens if someone tries to host more than one?

Forum talk is just casual talk. It's not a debate you have to win.

  • Yes, after a while they became aware of them and traced their origin.
  • Not initially, but the gods put some stock into it.
  • And some put stock in this. Some others think they 'just' exist by some happy accident without any purpose. The Black Crystal and the gods that would 'side' with it put stock in the balance theory though.
  • The collective memories are vaguely available to the various hosts, if they know what questions to ask (Except for the host of the Black Crystal who hasn't the free will to ask). Their are others historians and archives, some dedicated to keeping track of the crystals, some just that comprehensive of things, that have their stories. Much of these are filled by interviews with the crystal bearers themselves who may communicate with their Crystals.
  • Yes. He has, on several occasions, attempted to capture a crystal. He only succeed with the White one by killing the current host and getting it to jump into someone he set up close by compatible and loyal to him and kept it for a total of three hosts until #3 went rogue and he lost track of it again. The other ones have various means to escape a dying host, including various forms of teleportation. Once, Hrod tried to capture the Red with a clever cage to block all such forms of escape and it detonated all the branches and fruit inside its dying host to destroy the cage and harnessed the energy to tear a hole in the Material to slip through.
  • They have been variably all over the place. Some have disappeared for generations to centuries, presumably making rounds in the New Lands.
  • They can't. Each crystal actually needs to occupy the same physical and likely metaphysical space, so it's partly a matter of no room. Further, each crystal finds the idea of sharing a host with its opposite color to be repugnant.

I made changes to the 'Inevitabilities' they represent since 'Selfless' and 'Good' when I mentioned 'can still go for the wrong reasons' is a bit muddled to me.

Masked spirits / god- Fallen gift trees / Gifted ones-

These are created when the land around these trees or creatures is defiled or even destroyed. Being magical spirits they do not die from this process but due to the way Elena sees the world they are no longer of her kind, and thus abandoned having only whatever energies and powers they had before the defiling.

They often will gain freedom of movement, and not have to obey Elena's rules on how she sees nature and it's role in the world. Many often make masks from what's left for their physical form as a way to hold back their magical energies.

They are much weaker than Elena's other spirits but still much stronger than normal beings. Gaining and keeping magical power is key to their very existence, without it they will fade into the aether slowly, with no chance of an after life. This causing many to seek the aether and souls of weaker beings for power, others may try to regain their worshipers but theses worships usually leave them, at the same time Elena does. In rare cases they may chose a mortal and act as a personal guard in exchange for some of their aether.

They also usually cannot be seen or attack other non-masked gods unless they use up their existing magical power, making every single move well thought out. A missed attack or coming on to a potential partner wrong could easily seal their end. Those with close ties to nature or the aether can usually see them though.

Particularly strong masked spirits often form small groups of weaker spirits and rarely even sympathetic humanoids. Sometimes waging mostly unseen wars between themselves as they try to gain power of an area or, sometimes even trying to take down and defile other of Elena's spirits to add to their ranks or just to gain a hold over those areas and the aether within them.

Cults of the mask- Practically strong Masked spirits may attract worshipers of their own. While they may not be true gods, they are powerful enough to give gifts and blessings.

Theses cults will usually also crave ceremonial masks similar to the one's worn by their "Gods", for festivals and celebrations. Many god's view this with disdain and will often call these masked spirits demons, though that is more of a provocative slur rather than a description of what they are.

If these cults grow strong enough, some of their leaders have been known to taken Elena's tradition into their own hands and creating their own spirits who may or may not be defiled but regardless if they are defiled or not first, Elena sees them as such.

Masks and power- If a masked spirit is killed it's mask acts as a form of relic, depending on the power they had before death and how long they had the mask depends on what it's effect might be. But the effect is usually related to their abilities. So a tree's mask might allow it's wearer to pass through the trees with ease, or even call nature to their aid.

Another ability that the mask grants is the power to see ''Masked spirits" while being worn.
