"Painting The Fourth Wall" creates a memorable image.
"Medium Context Clues" is a bland, uninteresting term with very little to make it stand out from innumerable other ones.
Not that I expect this to stop anyone, I'm just unreasonably upset for losing this one. But if anyone can suggest a vivid name, I'm all for it.
Painting the Fourth Wall does creates a memorable image, I agree with you.
The problem is that, according to how people are using the trope, it creates the wrong image.
The other Fourth Wall tropes involve breaking, or coming close to breaking the fourth wall. This trope has nothing to do with that.
I don't like Medium Context Clues either, but the fact is that Painting the Fourth Wall is just not a good name. I'm sure we can find a better one if we put some effort into it.
I changed the "At issue" part a bit to fit the page's new description.
I'm also thinking that words like "non-diegetic" and "paratext" aren't really as relevant as I thought they were. I like some of those other names better.
I'm of the opinion that NONE of these proposed renames are good. And the fact that everyone (myself included) is at a loss for finding a rename that doesn't just sound like a dry, technical term bodes poorly.

@139- Huh; unknown words? So what about medium conventions? Does italics always indicate a whisper? Does font size 14 always indicate normal conversation levels? Medium-Context Clues, perhaps?
If this post seems weird, it's cause I'm tired.

Still new. Still learning. Asking questions and making mistakes.
Oh, yuk, that big Rule of Perception list.
I've been meaning to do something about that for a while now. It really needs to just be an actual index.
I don't see any conflict with Painting the Fourth Wall though.
Not conflict with the trope, but with our repair!
A recent oots strip http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0837.html where a joke works because the audience may have confused the two, when the characters would not make that mistake.
The two tropes are nearly the same thing.

Alternative Titles: Painting The Fourth Wall

Vote up names you like, vote down names you don't. Whether or not the name will actually be changed is determined with a different kind of Crowner (the Single Proposition crowner). This one just collects and ranks alternative names.
At issue:
Last Crowner established that we need to rename.
The name should indicate that the trope is "Making changes to usual medium conventions to represent things about the story" For instance, changing the appearance of a speech bubble to show that a character is evil, or a TV show changing to black-and-white to show that a flash-back is happening.
Look at the list of subtropes to get a complete idea of what the trope includes.
