Both sides of the political fence also seem to support it - the right because they see prohibition as an attack on freedom, the left because they see banning marijuana as an attack on their particular form of counter-culture.
Not quite.
  • It's primarily the more libertarian among "the right" who oppose marijuana prohibition. Conservatives of more authoritarian varieties still oppose it.
  • Not all "leftists" oppose marijuana prohibition, not all leftists see it as an attack on their counter-culture, and not all leftists who oppose marijuana prohibition do so due to seeing it as an attack on their counter-culture. (The right has no monopoly over believing in protecting freedom... or even simply just being pragmatic.)

I don't see how they're going to prosecute a law like that. It seems prohibitively expensive to do so, as well as a waste of time when cops and lawyers could be pursuing things like meth dealers and robbers.

Course, there are probably all sorts of laws that generally aren't enforced because they're either outdated or really stupid. *shrug* I think this is going to get turned down, actually. It's far too nitpicky.

Well, having seen Ken Burns' Prohibition it's comforting to see we've sailed the same lake of stupid before.

And yet, the US has gone out of its way trying to enforce such laws so far...
