I think jerks can be funny when they're meant to be. I find Jerk Sues insufferable. I hate self righteous characters that get to keep their 'superiority' all the time. I can't watch a character like Hayley without wanting them to fall hard on their ass, nor can I watch non-ironic The Unfair Sex without cringing. For all I complained about Roger in the past he's probably the most tolerable character now because his sociopathy is all part of the gag.
I admit maybe I should just accept Seth's shows aren't for me. I've never been much for Karma Houdinis or jerkassery for the sake of jerkassery. I've always been a comeuppance guy.

I don't really see how Stan is the designated loser of American Dad though. Pre Growing the Beard, sure, but then they brought everyone else down to his level, and he can be right or wrong as much as anyone else, as the situation ebbs and flows.
Though i'll admit to not watching recent seasons at all (pretty much everything post hottub)
Why do you keep blaming the bronies? Of course the show has morals every episode. Last time I heard, this show was supposed to be aimed at little girls from ages five to ten right? What does the fact that demographics outside the target audience liking the show and making it popular invalidate the fact that its target audience is supposed to be young children?
I'll take your word for it. That show was after my time. However, I have seen people complaining about the show on these forums. Personally, I find it heartening that at least some kids shows still focus on the humor.
Exactly! Until I started troping, I had NEVER seen such strong reactions to certain gags that everybody around me, both in real life and online, found hilarious.
Hey now, plenty of us gals enjoy slapstick too.
Hayley has been called out a number of times, though ("You're annoying. Everything you say is annoying."). I don't see her as being portrayed in a positive light most of the time.
It has no impact on the demographics themselves. The fans, though, that's another matter. Given that so many people think it's one of the greatest toons today...
I don't think kids' shows have been ultra-moralistic since the "knowing is half the battle" days.
While I do think you'll agree that gags can go too far and end up mean-spirited instead, it's actually kind of bizarre how sensitive some tropers can be.

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."If only Hayley had previously seen Rodger sell out a loved one of hers she'd have been on her guard this episode.
"Show us the Galaxy Warp."So is that it? American Dad is moving to another channel now?
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult. What, why would you say that?

Out-foxed.
I blame the horrible work he did on Cosmos as the final straw that got him kicked off the network.

"Show us the Galaxy Warp."Um, WHAT?
It was announced about a year ago that AD was moving to TBS. FOX always enjoyed screwing the show over. Besides, Seth merely provided the funding for Cosmos. He himself admitted that he was the least essential person behind the show. Jeez, will the scapegoating of the poor guy never end?
Cosmos is critically acclaimed and has an average score of 9.5/10 on IMDB out of nearly 15,000 votes. Just sayin'.
I must remind myself to find out the channel equivalent American Dad will be moving to...
Bump
Dislike this show. Very mean and unfunny. Every time Roger or stan talk, i have to change the channel. Surprise that so many people like it 0.o
Supports cartoons being cartoony!edited 19th Aug '14 2:25:25 PM by Eagal
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!Maybe I am. I've only watched like 10 episodes In my lifetime. My sis likes it a lot
Supports cartoons being cartoony! The earlier episodes are much better than the later ones.
Save for the play episode. That was fucking hilarious.
Oh really when?I'd say the opposite. The show followed it's parent's arc. Much like Family Guy, it started off mediocre (though early family guy was better than early AD, talking pre-cancellation in the first case and up to "Stan of Arabia" in the second case, early family guy still felt too schmaltzy, early AD was, of course, too political). Both Family Guy and AD peaked, but AD managed to hold at the peak longer, and its decline has not been as severe. It's the middle that's the best in both cases. Family Guy BEFORE season 7, American Dad more or less up to the Hottub, when it was uncanceled and started going a little stale.
I'm mixed about the political aspects of earlier aspects. A lot of the premise had more depth with it's political undertones. The CIA was more than a 'convenient super device factory', Stan had a more defined personality with his overzealous right wing agent moments, slowly devolving into another pathetic Peter-esque imbecile afterwards. I'm mixed about Hayley in both eras for reasons I already mentioned, but she was definitely a less superfluous character in the early episodes. Roger being an alien actually mattered in some early episodes too. I actually thought it became more like a generic Seth show afterwards, all the same archetypes are slowly taking over, even worse since Family Guy in all it's flaws, has at least gotten to the point of making some Deconstructions.
You'll definitely find many who feel the same about the early 'schmaltzy' seasons of Family Guy too.

I was expecting not to like this show, but oddly enough I find it to be pretty watchable.
Roger IS a complete asshole, but I think the gags revolving around his sociopathy work most of the time. And even then a lot of the jokes about him don't even revolve around that so much as how just WEIRD he is.

I think they got a better balance with Roger in later seasons. He felt a bit too much like Family Guy territory in the earlier seasons, having his Jerkass Karma Houdini antics overdone for the sake of mean spiritedness. In later seasons they tend to be more clever with it or moderate it for when it is genuinely funny.
That's a very common reaction.
Also, I feel the need to point out that outside of this site, Roger's sociopathy is celebrated by the fans.

I'm glad American Dad is moving to TBS, because that ending was pretty underwhelming.
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.I think it had to do with a certain guest star...
I did enjoy Stan shelving the "American Dad on FOX" book and the melancholy Theme Tune Cameo. Still, this episode would have been so much more solid if they used a guest star who actually ACTED and didn't simply read lines off a script. The wooden acting actually ruined the episode in my opinion. This particular person was apparently approached because they wanted a "sexy" voice. Was Kathleen Turner unavailable?
The Golden Turd continuation was AMAZING, however.
I will leave my opinion of that certain guest star out of this post.

who even was the guest star? I couldn't pin the voice.
Edit: oh, duh, right. Kim Kardashian, right?

I LOATHE American Dad. Severly. It's not like Family Guy AT ALL. Unlike Family Guy, I don't find it funny, I don't like—-or at least enjoy watching—-the characters at all (Roger more unbearable than Elmyra Duff to me, and the fact that they OVERUSE him just makes it 1000,000 times worse), the storylines all just involve the dad learning a lesson, and there's often gross or bizarre stuff that doesn't work without the good, over-the-top jokes or hilarious character Family Guy has.
I don't like The Cleveland Show, but I LOATHE American Dad. I'm sorry, I just hate it and the only reason I find myself watching it is because there isn't more Family Guy out there for me to enjoy.
Without slapstick it'll become herstory.
"Show us the Galaxy Warp."
