Really?

Now I'm not a big fan of affirmative action, but this is not how to go about it. I find it amusing that book author feels the same way.

Not that the threats of violence against these guys are any more effective. I wonder when people will start to learn that there are better ways to make a political stand...on both sides of the issue.

Wait, isn't this customer discrimination?

edit: Dumb question, yes it is. Which I do think does well to point out the irony in affirmative action.

Well, that point was hammered home decades ago, when it was first implemented.

When you have racists citing an anti-racist measure as justification for racism, you really ought to know you've gone about it the wrong way.

It's just pointless retreading of old ground.

So do albinos get free cookies, or do they have to pay double the white guy price?

I really don't think this is exactly a massive moral outrage. They're making a point about the unfairness of positive discrimination, and I find it hilarious that people are shouting them down for the sale of cookies at different prices being discriminatory.

The fact that its racist against white people is the point.

It would only really be comparable if they made cookies cheaper for minorities because they felt that other places were short changing them on confection sales.

That is the part where I hand in my full 2.00 and say keep the change.

I actually agree with the message here. People should not be admitted to a college because they're black, or female or whatever. They should be admitted to a college because they are good students. Race or gender should not be a factor in making a decision, only what the student has actually done to show that they deserve to go to this college.

On the other hand, do we need affirmative action? Considering the other discriminatory shit that goes on in this country from before birth all the way to the college application, yes. Requiring affirmative action is not a good thing, it is a symptom of an unhealthy society, but it is better to have it than not have it when opportunities for minorities are the way they are now.

Currently, it's more of an economic problem than a racial one. Studies have shown that when you account for financial background and school quality, all kids perform the same academically regardless of race. (Courtesy of Freakonomics.) The issue is that more black children tend to come from a poorer background. And due to the way U.S. schools are funded, this means the schools they attend usually will be sub-par.

While racism did cause this problem, it's not what's keeping it going (it's a self-perpetuating cycle at this point). Solutions need to be tailored around providing education incentives and career opportunities for poor people in general, as well as equal standards for schools regardless of region.

I totally agree with what they did. Affirmative action is stupid as hell, there are poor white people and wealthy black people, tuition assistance should be based upon income level, not race.

Just shows how tolerant the tolerance police at Berkeley are.. Death threats over a cookie sale?

I'm a little biased, I fucking hate Berkeley.

Well, they're right. It's not even race they should base such things on, it's economic background. Affirmative action is generally idiotic...

Still, the analogy and sliding scale idea was priceless. I [lol]'d.

I totally agree with what they did.
A bunch of white guys bitching over having to pay more from a position of ignorance prevents me from complete agreement.
tuition assistance should be based upon income level, not race.
This + a blind selection process for tuition assistance and stuff like scholarships, so the people selecting have no idea of what the ethnicity of the applicants/candidates are.

If you're going to subvert demographic privileges entirely, do so properly.

That would require a revamp of how a lot of scholarships are selected. Quite a few of them involve interviews of some kind, and I would not be terribly surprised if most involved a background check.
