An excerpt from a diplomatic meeting between Elena of Lancel and Nra'Qus of Molo'Qraaat.

Elena: My, my, do you think we would keep something else under our sleeves?

[Nra'Qus, under the watch of a humorless-looking Swords Master: Yes. You are Lanccel. We know you cover every field allowed.

Elena: Ehehe well, that would have to come as a suprise, wouldn't it? Though I won't deny some prototypes in some installations deep beneath the earth...

Nra'Qus: Of courssse. And not for sale.

Elena: There is nothing that should not be learned. But there are stuff that you shouldn't sell.

Nra'Qus: A people becomes wiser through hardship and agony. Let us hope your people do not have to suffer the latter, as we did, and as we inflicted.

Elena: Indeed, I hope the Lancel never have to feel such pain. We fought against people as did many others, but we were lucky in our engagement. The Lancel remain untouched but by each other

Nra'Qus —makes a gesture of blessing—: May you know continued prudencce to your creations...

—tone shifts from solemn to businesslike pleasantness—

Nra'Qus: But let uss move to other topics, shall we?

Elena: Indeed, let us then -Says Elena, crossing one leg over the other-

Nra'Qus —touches prongs of topmost limps together, tenting them—: It hass come to our attention that you have the techniques for building manufacturing facilities of great size and high out put.

Elena: That we do. Production is one of our fortes after all -Says Elena proudly, intercrossing the fingers on her hands- Nra'Qus —nods head in a deliberately human gesture—: Good... Would your Company be interessted in sharing those techniques?

Elena: Define sharing.

Nra'Qus: We pay you, recognissing your copywrite, allow you new trade routes into our territory, all in return for giving us the methods of setting up our own facilities.

Elena: Hmmmm so I see... please, do describe me the current way of events production wise for your people.

Nra'Qus: Simple. All our devicces are claw-crafted.

Elena: Spaceships too? All of your mechanized transportation, claw by claw?

Nra'Qus: Weee have mechanical assistence in the use of certain materials, but yes.

Elena: -Coughs softly, bringing her hand to her mouth in a polite gesture- I had read reports, but still it does come as a bit of a surprise knowing that all of it is done that way. Your people really are amazing.

—Nra'Qus bows his upper segments, whiskers held out and waving; the Swordsmaster twitches, but otherwise remains still—

Nra'Qus: I am greatly honoured that you would think that of Molo'Qraaat. We value absolute control over quality in what we craft.

Elena: Do you believe that with our methods, you may retain that level of quality?

Nra'Qus: With tailoring, yess.

Elena: Ehehe now you are the which honors us, Nra'Qus.

—Nra'Qus waves his whiskers in a rotation—

Elena: Still, you do realize that this is an arragement quite unlike anything we have ever offered?

Nra'Qus: We realizze this.

Elena: Hmmm I see... The construction and overseeing of the opearation will require a great deal of Lancel personel. Personel which will be residing in your sector, yes?

Nra'Qus: Pleasse understand, we wish to learn the techniques, so that we can use them ourselves.

Elena: We do understand. That is why it's such a great undertaking... and why the cost will be high. We cannot just hand over such techniques in a manual. They must be adapted to your people and taught face to face.

—Nra'Qus looks Elena directly in the eye— Nra'Qus: As massster to apprentice. That is more familiar.

Elena: Ehehe, technology might progress at an incredible rate... but there are some things which simply do not change.

Nra'Qus: You are ssaying that your Company is willing to work with us in the way required?

Elena: Indeed. The details of course, need to be ironed out, but you got yourself a deal.

—Nra'Qus bows again; the Swords Master blinks—

Nra'Qus: May our godss smile on your Company for its choice. Thank you.

—The claw prongs enmesh—

Nra'Qus: What... payment would be acceptable?

Elena: Your friendship and the ties that will be made with your people are one. As for the other... well, lets just say that you should warn your banks Nra'Qus. But worry, not my friend. It shall be worth it.

—Nra'Qus raises a claw, studying the positioning of the prongs for a moment, before extending it towards Elena— Nra'Qus: Ssra'Quaa'Vio, Lancel'Zi'sk Elenaa.

Elena: A pleasure it was, doing business with you, Nra'Qus of the Molo'Qraaat. May our partnership make both of us grow.

There's a rather significant set of consequences to this meeting.

Thoughts?

I find it amusing—and to be honest, somewhat baffling—that everything the Molo'Qraaat make is done by hand. You're telling me that automated factories and/or assembly lines are something they don't have?

Based on the way said excerpt was written, I think I can be forgiven for coming to that conclusion, amigo. More to the point, I refuse to believe that any one race without such a high degree of mechanized mass production as is being implied here could successfully challenge more or less every major power in the known galaxy that existed at that time in a conflict which lasted for five years and come out on top, regardless of how skilled their assassins are or how high quality their hand-crafted equipment is.

I appologize, I truly do, but this is one aspect of the setting which my willing suspencion of disbelief simply will not tolerate.

Considering automated (though overseen) manufacture is a cornerstone of even our technology today...

Try and imagine 21st century Earth when all cars had to be made by hand. I think you're making an extraordinary assumption somewhere, though if it's regarding the nature of technology today, the theoretical nature of technology in our setting, or pertaining to the nature of automated production itself I cant tell where.

With an entire planet focused on the production of a starship it probably takes around several years to make! You have the agriculture of China mated with the industrial base of an impoverished eastern European country.

No way, I never thought of that! :o

...

You guys might want to edit the korpers so they have some sort of automated systems/factories if you're gonna use them, just saying. I'm also curious why you still planing to use them then, since they never really fitted in anyway, at least 'as is'...

Just saying, I originally designed them with the idea they built everything themselves. That said, they have more workable space for construction, since they live underground/aren't bothered by claustrophobic environments.
