What if you could write a show aimed at girls?

I know everyone has heard fo Girl-Show Ghetto where the mantra is anything girly will Tastes Like Diabetes and suck. But if you had the talent of Lauren Faust then what kinda of girl show would you make that appeals to girls and anyone outside that age demographic espically older guys.

My girl show would be called Judge Debra and have it be that it would be about a girl who becomes the protector of a magical world created by a Phoenix who gives her the power to turn into a Magical Girl Warrior and would have the power of light as her main ability. This Magical Land would take place in a Dungeon Punk setting with it averting Medieval Stasis and have it be sorta in an Industrial Revolution time frame approxiatly 1850's.I also see it as being a Fantasy Kitchen Sink with many creatures from different cultures inhabiting the world.

It would be WITCH meets Dungeon Punk meets Narnia

[up]Besides that Lauren Faust bit, Pretty Cure already fits the bill of "girl show would you make that appeals to girls and anyone outside that age demographic espically older guys" pretty damn well.

Most of my stories are to have female protagonists. I don't think they'd be oriented exclusively for girls, although they do feature things the younger female demographics tend to like, like Ho Yay.

I am a guy though, so I could fail horribly at this.

Knew who made the topic...

Anyway. I'd never write a show aimed specifically towards girls. None of the themes are really anything I can get into, most of which are based heavily on romance and a childish outlook on friendship. I am a fan of female protagonists, but I can't see myself conjuring up a show aimed at such an audience. I take Oda Eiichiro's approach in my style of writing, aiming for "the boyish at heart."

It would be a lot like Avatar The Last Airbender (in tone and content, not setting and character dynamics), but the central protagonist would be a girl. I am firmly of the belief that girls' tastes are not markedly different from boys' tastes. They like adventure, they like humor, they like escapism...and they like to see themselves reflected in the media they watch.

Stuff what I do.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of strong female protagonists in shows that aren't aimed at either gender.

Aeryn Sun from Farscape is probably my dream girl and all around favorite female protagonist. Her and the male lead did end up together, but not until almost 3 seasons of character development for both of them along the way, and making the development of their relationship seem very natural.

It bugs the shit out of me when there are female characters in media who are there only to appear as a damsel in distress/love interest/TheChick.

Only little girls enjoy shows about other girls. Once they hit 13 or so it's homosexual men or bust.

I'd make the show celebrate self-reliance, personal autonomy, defiance against the establishment and Ethical Slut sexuality: Might as well take the chance to instill good values on youth.

Girls shouldn't learn personal autonomy and self-reliance? Dunno about ethical sluts but I don't think it'd hurt for teens to examine/evaluate their attitudes toward sex...

[up]Personal autonomy and self-reliance are things I could get behind by but there are just some lines I will not cross and Savage will be hearing some angry words from if he did somehow manage to air it.

[up] If it was a series aimed at female teenagers, a sex-positive message couldn't hurt, considering all the guilt-tripping about sex they're routinely subjected to.

Sex is something positive: you can enjoy your sexuality. Only you are entitled to decide where, when, how, why and with whom you consent to it, and there's no reason to feel ashamed. as a theme might be refreshing, especially for girls who are subjected to the horrors of abstinence-only education or other anti-sex crap.

Savage Heathan I have a feeling you have watched Degrassi The Next Generation so many times and is this show going to be a more female aimed version of it.

[up]I really don't like that message and I think you should focus more on the self-reliance stuff which I think is better.Plus I am not anti-sex education its just that it your message has some Unfortunate Implications to it.

[up] I haven't watched that.

It'd be probably a somewhat dark sci-fi setting: The characters would be in their late teens (portrayed by 18-22 actors), mostly female, with a few sexy boys thrown in for Fanservice. The show would be shot from a bisexual Male Gaze, providing plenty of plausibly deniable Fanservice for all genders and sexual orientations. Instead of setting it at high-school, I'd set the show in an academy of starship pilot ''cadets''. They'd do cool maneuvers during training, often threatening career-ending injury. The main cast would be a squad of junior year cadets. There'd be 13 important characters: Eight girls and five guys. There'd be two lesbians and a bisexual girl (it'd get complicated), a handsome gay guy, his bi boyfriend, and three other dudes. The show would focus on their lives'n'antics, it'd show them growing up into actual warriors, it'd inevitably angst a bit about these guys eventually going to war and possibly dying. It would take progressive sexual values for granted: Everybody Has Lots of Sex. Safe sex would be promoted in a non-intrusive fashion.

I'd draw from sci-fi, boot camp and teenage series plots. Inevitably, it'd be sort of political: It'd oppose surveillance and censorship (themes with wich teens probably sympathize), it would be critical of drug prohibition and promote the struggle against it, it'd tackle issues of homophobia, racism, injustice... Y'know, a slick modern progressive standpoint. All those temes would be tangential to the plots instead of blatant anvils: Show, Don't Tell. It'd examine those things (and many others) as that kind of stuff starts affecting some characters, mostly in realistic ways. It goes without saying, but it'd be a World of Snark.

The soundtrack would be a mix of post-metal, drum and bass and industrial metal.

I'd make a show kind like Xena: Warrior Princess featuring a badass chick kicking all kinds of ass.

Speaking of Xena, I think I'll watch season 1 on DVD tomorrow...

Savage: "evils of drug prohibition"... [lol] Rider of Brohan, you crack me up. Though I endorse the whole showing sex as a positive thing and not something to be ashamed of.

Savage@ My idea of Judge Debra has a lot of Christian symbolism and a mixture of mythologies from around the world and not just Europe.

I also see her as being African American and teach the old lesson of With Great Power Comes Great Resposnsibility as she goes through a Coming of Age story as she matures into the role of Judge.

It would also have some influence from Narnia,Miyazaki, and Disney.I think the main message would be what a true protector/warrior is and the responsiblity that comes with it.

Heavy@Yes,I can but it could get very popular over in Japan because that country loves Christian symbolism and magical girls.Plus I could I could get it past the radar so subtely that they wouldn't notice besides Avatar the Last Airbender got away with a lot of Eastern symbolism and philosophy so why can't I use Christian symbolism and philosophy.

I sorta have a love for putting in African American protagnists because I am black myself.

Christianity does have some cool mythology to it, like the war between Lucifer and God, and St Michael is just straight up badass. He's the original gangsta of Christian heavenly asskicking. And on a side note, my most recent New Vegas character is an African American chick who specializes in explosives.

But yeah, your show's idea sounds pretty interesting joy.
