If you're honest and don't adopt Shinji and Gendo's distant viewpoint of idolizing her, it's stunningly obvious that Yui was a vile creature who put her stunningly insane goal ahead of the husband who cherished her and the son who adored her.

Or to put it simply, she be crazy.

I interpret Gendo as being either a genius EOE!Shinji who was barely held together by Yui's affection and is now determined to annihilate all of creation itself if that's what it takes to get her back....

Or a Well-Intentioned Extremist who knows he'd suck as a single parent and believed that Shinji would be better off somewhere else... and is resolved to retrieve Yui so that the three of them can be a family again.

It kinda depends on what fic I'm working on.

[up]Having said that, I totally agree with you that Yui's not exactly right in the head. Again, how much I play that up depends on what fic I'm working on. Burning Vengeance? A little Axe-Crazy from time to time, but generally just averting Purity Sue. neon❖Knights? She'd give Light Yagami a run for his money. In both scheming and halfheartedly self-justified megalomania.

Not as crazy as someone who thinks using a word twice in the same sentence doesn't ruin the impact.

Seriously, though, it's entirely possible that Yui was a perfectly nice girl who just happened to be so out of touch with normal people and their ingrained desire to remain human that she thought she was doing everyone a favour by helping her dad's friends bring us all together in warm happy soup. Transhumanists as a class tend to not get what the big deal is about meat when immortality gets dangled in front of them. It doesn't make them cruel or crazy or dumb.

That's...a shockingly poor generalization.

Yeah...

Is it weird that one of the most crazy theories behind any anime is "the nice girl next door is the mastermind behind everything"?

I mean, I'm pretty sure I could get together the transhumanists of the world and ask them about instrumentality and they'd come close to 80% rejection; everybody likes an individual identity.

It's much more likely that Yui is extremely maladjusted then that she's well-intentioned and out of touch.

Technically not impossible, but I think it highly improbable. For NK, I go with the interpretation that she's a non-romantic form of Yandere (and at the same time being a Shipper on Deck for some people) regarding the people she cares about, and has a Lack of Empathy for those she doesn't.

Then again, I think that most transhumanists are thinking more along the lines of genetic engineering or cybernetics.

Eh from what I gathered Yui just wanted to fully complete an Evangelion and put a human soul in it so that something would always remain of humanity's existance regardless of whatever happened. But she didn't want instrumentality.

She was counting on Gendo to take care of Shinji, which wouldn't seem right if she wanted everyone to melt in a few years anyway.

And once instrumentality actually happened she was the one who tried to talk Shinji out of it.

A pal of mine wrote a fic analyzing Gendo's character and how complex he is, though he hates Gendo, he made sure to not bash him. The fic is here http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8284903/1/ , but the problem is that he uses English as second language, so it has a lot of errors (I already told him to get a beta).

My work is here. Current main fic: Tengen Toppa Gurren Solvernia

It just occured to me that if Gendo really wanted Shinji to be a soldier for him of maximum usefulness it probably would have been better for him to raise Shinji himself and indoctrinate him like so, drill him to be obidient, give him an extensive education, train him to be warrior etc. Sort of like how Asuka was supposedly (as in it's part of her backstory but she doesn't at all act like this) raised. In fact I'm pretty sure in one fic or many he does.

Instead he sends him away to be raised unloved in the boonies, then promptly brings him back and forces his wimp marshmellow of a son to be a fighter. It ends up working, but could have failed multiple ways (Shinji could have grown up resentful and wanted nothing to do with him, and thus not even gone to Tokyo 3, or Shinji could have ended up getting himself killed while piloting)

Maybe Gendo really did just not want him around, even though it would have been more effective to raise him himself.

It's not so much that he wants Shinji to be obedient, but rather wants him to be at his lowest point and be so goddamned lonely when it came time for his decision that he'd vote for starting Third Impact.

That too however, was mostly just how things coincidently worked out thanks to things beyond Gendo's control. Before everything fell apart Shinji was sort of happy but then...

Misato became distant to him because Kaji died, which was due to Seele not Gendo.

Shinji became afraid of Rei because he found what she was. Also not Gendo's doing. He never wanted Shinji to ever know.

Asuka went comatose due to the Angels, and then died fighting the MP Evas. Again not Gendo's doing.

Kaoworu also befriended him, but then had to die due his nature. Also not something Gendo planned.

Not to mention Shinji getting control of 3rd impact was not at all part of the plan. Gendo wanted control of 3rd impact. Rei turning on him was not at all according to his plan.

Meanwhile raising Shinji to be his loyal minion and making their final goal "We're gonna cause 3rd impact to see Mom again" would have gotten Gendo what he wanted, regardless of what happened.

Gendo was just Stupid Evil where it mattered the most, despite being borderline Magnificent Bastard everywhere else. I think his case was a classic "The trees don't let you see the forest" one.

I have the sense that Gendo just wanted all the Eva pilots to be completely broken. There could be any number of reasons for this; pick any of: only broken pilots can synch with the Eva properly; non-broken pilots might enter greater synch a la Shinji against Zeruel in different circumstances, throwing things into unpredictability; non-broken pilots might make the Evas as a force into a sufficiently powerful group as to make humanity less desperate, potentially reducing NERV's power and potentially throwing off the scenario; non-broken pilots might stand against Gendo if/when he made it clear that he was going for Tang End.

There's a fic somewhere in which Asuka is raised by Batman. It's kind of interesting.

It's established canon that Gendo is Not Good With People - apparently, all that Manipulative Bastard stuff was accidental.

Link to that "Asuka raised by Batman" fic?

Huh... I guess that's the appeal to Evangelion now. You learn a little more about it everyday if you can dedicate yourself to finding out about all the little things about it.

[up][up]It's not really that established, though; all that manipulative genius stuff serves as a counterpoint to anything Gendo himself, or others, may say/do on the subject. This is Evangelion, and the possibility that the characters and narration and even Word of God cannot be relied upon to truthfully present anything is sort of a given.

Really, there's no true definition of Gendo's character. There will always be a Gendo Ikari in each fan's minds, and each one will be a true Gendo Ikari.

Asuka raised by Batman: [1]

It's by the same author as Last Child of Krypton (plus related things) and NGE: Valkyrie. Unfortunately only two chapters are done and it's currently on hiatus.

Wasn't Last Child of Krypton the one where Shinji is Superman?

It wasn't too bad, but SOE 2: Lone Heir of Krypton is infinitely better.

Yeah. Though there were two versions. The first basically became an all out DC crossover with Green Lanterns and Batman, the Amazons and all kind of various DC villains showing up. While the remake cut most of that out and boiled it down to just someone like Superman existing in the otherwise completely bleak world of Eva. Though the remake all sets up for some kind of super crossover thing that's just starting.

I think the one I read was the second one. Where Shinji couldn't pilot due to not being Yui's biological son, being Kryptonian.

AquamanOS Since: Apr, 2011

That was in both of them. Presumably so Shinji would be demoted to Misato's meek Clark Kentish assistant and could sneak off to be Superman instead of being stuck in EVA-01 during Angel battles.

Which actually isn't that bad an idea really. One of issues with the SOE stories featuring Rei and Asuka is that they rarely get to get use their superheroine identities against the Angels since they're usually piloting instead, causing an notable variance between an Angel chapter or a hero chapter. Naturally this isn't an issue with the other ladies who aren't pilots.

Although thinking about it Rei usually has the excuse of Unit 00 not working, and can fool everyone with her copies as the Silver Surfer so really this is mostly a problem for Supergirl Asuka.

Instead in those stories Asuka is Shinji's replacement while Eva-02 goes to either Mari or....I forget who used it in the 2nd story. Kaworu I think.
