Trope Description Improvement Drive:

I've always sort of seen it as the fetish equivalent to Straight Gay.

Casual Kink is, as I've understood, when a kink mentioned in a work just doesn't "mean" anything specific, i.e. an aversion of kink-related tropes.

There's a great example from the Doctor Who episode "Forest of the Dead", which rather astonishingly is not listed as a trope example. The Doctor asks what River Song (his future wife, who's living their relationship backwards via Timey-Wimey Ball) is doing with a pair of handcuffs. She grins at him in a very meaningful way and says only, "Spoilers."

The handcuffs thing comes up again in season five with Amy Pond, and again is not elaborated.

This description is near-incomprehensible as a main.
For anyone feeling the feels, PM box is open.

That's understandable. The current description is an obvious candidate for the Self Demonstrating namespace.

Ugh, Fantastic Fighting Style's description is a stub. I'm tempted to chuck it to TRS, but want to see if it could be easily solved here instead.

I would add "Often involve unrealistic or dangerous fighting styles" if were sure it didn't sound like complaining.

Doesn't sound like complaining to me. <adds that> Anything else?

A description doesn't need to be long and involved. I think that one's fine; it's a succinct statement of the definition of a high-level supertrope.

(In fact, that leads me to an observation: the higher the position a trope occupies on the supertrope-subtrope tree, the more concise and brief the definition can be and still be clear. The lower the position, the more detail is necessary in the definition to distinguish it from other subtropes.)

835 Larkmarn, Thu, 8th Aug '13 8:24:37 AM Relationship Status: Hello, I love you
I think maybe making mention of why the trope gets used (Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp", or so they can make stuff up without being called on What the Fu Are You Doing?, or just Rule of Cool) wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But it's not strictly necessary. The description could stand to be short.

The Complaining about Complaining trope really needs work. It's a trope, I can see that.

I have to wonder if that wasn't trimmed down from a wordier description.
Neoclassicism, AKA the Tinkerbell school of economics.
It should have been replaced with something more... descriptive. I think it was trimmed for complaining.

Complaining about Complaining's description was never longer than that if you ignore Alice and Bob examples and editor notes.

Also, Justifying Edit. Would anyone mind if I revert it to the oldest version? The current is three different pages stuffed into one.

It's been mentioned that the Unexpectedly Realistic Gameplay description is too long and needs cleanup.

I'm bringing it here to discuss ideas.

Real-Time Strategy's article looks unnecessarily long; I was thinking of taking out the explanation about common unit and building archetypes and put it in analysis, but then it hit me that we don't seem to have a (super)trope for such things, a la An Adventurer Is You, Common Character Classes, and Fantasy Character Classes for role-playing games. What do you guys think?

[up] It doesn't look that long to me. It's viewable from start to finish within a single browser screen; I think that's one standard (but not the only one) of judging whether or not an article here is too long.

That trope specifically talks about the differences between factions in general strategy and specialities, and not always related to what types of units each side has.

Ok, now for something that hopefully won't make me look as much an idiot... tongue

The description for Creator Thumbprint has one line with the description... and a not-small paragraph going into a lot of different tropes it isn't.

However, I also noticed a lot of people were apparently not paying attention to the part of that one line that says "across several works". I took a chainsaw to the Webcomics misuse, knocking the section down to 4 items from the original 16, and trimmed down the Web Original section by a somewhat lesser degree, but it still has a lot of misuse as Author Tract, with a healthy flavoring of Author Appeal.

So, would just fixing the description here be sufficient followed by a cleanup thread in the Short Term Projects forum, or should I open up a TRS thread dedicated solely to Creator Thumbprint if/when there's a slot open?

edited 19th Aug '13 2:34:46 AM by Nohbody

Nothing Is the Same Anymore has a confusing description that, once again, names a lot of tropes that it isn't.

Do the articles Strength, Constitution, and their parent The Six Stats really need example lists? What would be the point? Do we even need the first two articles in the first place?

I don't know, but changing them would fall into TRS's responsibility, in any case.
