French test (17/20)

http://www.jeuxvideo.com/articles/0001/00017620-dead-or-alive-5-test.htm

In short: "it's fast, nervous, pleasant to the eye, can be accessible as well as technical, but it doesn't really offer anything new apart from small tweaks."

A bit surprised that the tester praises the character modelization but finds the environments lacking. I find the arenas pretty damn impressive for what I saw… the guy also loved the story mode apparently.

IGN liked it too.

I think the mechanic changes won't be appreciated by casual players that much.

Evaluating the plot in Dead or Alive 5 is ultimately a waste of words. Oh, you can make a qualitative judgment – observe that it somehow manages to be a train wreck, a plane wreck and a car crash all in one. It's like watching all combustible vehicles on Earth hurtle into each other at a singular point of stupidity, and then burning in the consequent fireball of awkward, unintentional comedy.

I think I'll get it. From what I read, it seems to be mostly just "more of the same", but since I'm lacking that "same", due to the lack of a X-Box (360) (I only have 2 and Dimensions, which while good, is "just" a hand-held game and has odd flaws like the fixed battle Arcade Mode), that's good enough for me.

And it's the first main game, in which Creepy "The DOA-Girls-Are-My-Daughters" McAsshole had no part. That's something.

Gunpla is amazing!
It may be more of the same but its as good as I remembered back when I played 3 with my friend.

I like it.

And I love playing as Brad Wong.

The fight scene over the piece of food with Eliot is amazing. [lol]

Alpha testers and fans wanted the breasts to remain huge. Can't really blame them, there's series history to live up to. Of course regardless of breast size I think DOA 5 has the sexiest girls since they actually look like real people now, ditching the "Big eyed child proportioned sameface" they've had going since 2.

In other news, the realization that the game requires an online pass has severely diminished my interest.

Well, I have to admit that they did tone the fanservice down. Breasts don't bounce as much as they did before. But they still bounce noticeably. Still, that's more than I expected. I thought that the claim that they will tone it down will be completey bullshit.

And while the characters look more "real" than in previous games, they still have that "artificial, doll-like" look going on (the girls, at least). But it's much better now (and more of a change than the fanservice).

It seems that Virtua Fighter characters are unlocked in the story mode. At least, I unlocked Akira after beating him, when he appeared out of the blue for no apparent reason and Kokoro challenged him... for no apparent reason.

The rest of the story mode is barely better. But in it's badness it can be quite, but unintended, amusing. Even when it attempts to be funny, it's still only unintended so, in a "hahaha, was that an attempt at humor?" kind of way. Like when Hitomi goes through a South American jungle in safari clothes to train and Ayane asks her whether that's the right clothes to train in.
People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.

I'm actually having a blast trying a new one over here. I just have to stop relying on Hold too much and just try blocking casually, and that's it. Story is kinda meh, not as epic as Mortal Kombat 9, but it's servicable and not too bad compared to the rest.

We should try getting online sometime. ChrisX_212 PSN.

Also, I still can't get over the fact that I probably would be using English voice the whole time. Even with names like Hikaru Midorikawa and Nobutoshi Canna amongst the cast AND Hideyuki Hori as Hayabusa. I have to admit, Troy Baker did a real good job in emulating him.

You have to get to the bottom of this, or else everything will be over before you come to terms to it.

I love the marketing campaign they've got going for it. It just screams "please take me seriously".

... Maybe I'll buy it.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.
DLC costumes.

After the Magic Skirt, Christie invents the Magic Jacket, Helena dresses in Napoleonian era, and Kokoro takes out the sarashi. And Zack is the fifth Teletubby. Yyyep.

Those where some of my favorites from 4.

Yeah, Zack and Helena's outfits are series staples. In fact, Helena's outfit was her default in DOA 2 and 3.

RE: The Story:

I have to admit, the story actually had two plot twists I didn't see coming. I think that's a first for a fighting game.

Oh, so that alien costume has already been used? I'm surprised I never heard of it.

Mortal Kombat had some twists in it, but those where mostly directed at people who where already pretty knowledgeable about the canon...

Oh, I know. I actually like MK's plot (or at least, I did before the reboot).

But DOA 5 actually used foreshadowing, allusion, and misdirection.

I KNOW! I'm shocked too!

Most of those DLC costumes seem to be throwbacks. Gen Fu's is his original costume, so is Bayman's. And both Mila and Tina are using outfits from Tina's original Dead or Alive appearance.
MK 9 still has one of the best story modes among fighters, IMO, I just disliked how some of the villain characters were reduced to goons...poor reptile. Oh and the how a majority of the good guys got killed off. Raiden's incompetence was hilariously annoying too. MK 2 arc was awesome.

I saw like the first 5 chapters of DOA 5's story, it was really stupid and sloppily paced for the most part(Kokoro can go die in a fire) but I heard it gets better later on.

I haven't played DOA 5, but past experiences tell me that the story in the DOA series tend to be (really really good) FM Vs with miniscule (if any) actual plot development for those who aren't morally ambiguous Japanese hard-asses. And even then, not so much.

Are they still doing that?

Side note: Tina's alternate from DOA 1 is a highly unexpected and pleasant surprise (and Mila wearing the alternate version even more so)!

Don't ask what's wrong with me, because I don't know either.
No, it's more like MK 9 now. But much worse written.

Now I want to play the story mode just to see how bad it could be.

Ninja Gaiden 3's story was it's strongest point so I thought Team N where getting better at this stuff. It was still pretty weak, though...

Vertigo is right: it's very, very sloppily paced (90% of the chapters are filler which have no story impact whatsoever). Further, nothing is ever explained and the story really amounts to nothing. There's two major plot twists and one minor one, and the Brad/Eliot food fight was Crazy Awesome, but that's about it.

Is the AI still in full "Fuck You" mode or does it have a 'bearable' difficulty setting? I was fine with DOA 3 for measure, but DOA 4 was generally too hard for me.

I haven't played it yet, but considering Hayashi's policy of accessibility, there has to be a level for beginners...
