It's Nick at Nite. That's been grown-up programming since Nickelodeon was created. Kids go to bed at like 8 or 9.

Well, I been on this Earth for at least a quarter of century so far. I can see how the shock value may exist for those who have seen Friends when it first aired, and they don't think it should exist on Nick at Nite because it's not "nostalgic" to them. It still feels the same. When I think of nostalgia, I think I Love Lucy, not something that aired while I was alive!

I'm sorry, what? Don't you have to have been around when it first aired for it to count as nostalgia?

Nostalgia counts for movies and shows you watched when you were younger, yes.

Note I didn't say "first aired while you were alive".

I saw I Love Lucy when I was younger but that's when it was on Nick at Nite in the early 90's, when it had already rerun for 4 decades. Therefore shows like that seem more distant to me, and thus, I feel like that's what Nick at Nite should be known for.

Nick at Nite has always just been about whatever syndicated show they can get cheap that people will watch. I remember when it was stuff like Cosby, but I'm fine with it being newer stuff.

What's more unconscionable is TV Land, an entire network founded on the idea that people want to watch classic television, is running whatever just lapsed into syndication now.

Could be worse. It could be George Lopez every hour, on the hour.

Well I hate to say it, but Friends first premiered 17 years ago. Kids who were born the year it came out are seniors in high school. So this is one of the few shows that I can say they are justified in showing now. They started showing a lot of 90's shows in the early 2000s too.

How much has it been syndicated in the intermediate years in the USA? Because in the UK we've had it on repeats on E4 and C4 since...well pretty much since it first started. E4 has shown it pretty much daily since the channel first began. For two episodes. They've gone through the entire series several times. There have been presenters who have joked and lampshaded this fact who have had entire careers in the time it has been on. It. Just. Won't. STOP!!!

Well, actually they did cancel it recentlt.

But my point is- here, in the UK, everyone has seen Friends. There are probably people who were born after it Jumped the Shark (depending on if/when you think it Jumped the Shark) who are very familiar with the show. How about you?

Yeah, it's still showed on the WB during daytime hours pretty much every weekday here in the US. Plus it's on TBS as well.

Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.

Meanwhile, legal tape has kept The Simpsons from airing on any American cable channel (it's a money maker in syndication and Syndex rules would lead to a lot of blackouts and lost ratings).

Yeah, Nick at Nite basically started as a way for Viacom to do something with their huge back catalog of old CBS sitcoms. The funny thing us, when they did a dry run as "Camp Nickelodeon" earlier in 1985, the shows they used were old Screen Gems properties (The Donna Reed Show and Dennis the Menace), probably because Columbia wasn't doing all that well at the time (these were the Coke years) and MTV Networks likely got them cheap.

It's not just legal matters keeping The Simpsons off cable. Fox's contract states that the makers have to offer syndication to Fox affiliates before any other station. Pretty much every Fox affiliate takes it.
