For my writing class. The assignment was just 15, which we were supposed to tack on to our already completed 60, but I decided I didn't like my first sixty so I re-did from the ground up.

I thought I was pretty hot stuff until I found out another guy in the class went from 30 to 90 that week. Then I did basic math and realized he wrote less than me, just barely though.

My first reaction is "Wow! That's amazing!" My second reaction was "Almost anyone can write that much in a week; the trick is writing that much at an acceptable quality level." My third reaction was "What class are you taking that demands you write so much?"

My first question is "How many words would that make?"

My second and third are the same as the previous poster. tongue

Seriously though, congratulations. Keep up the good work. smile

My first thought was "yes, but when are you going to edit them?"

Yeah...on a good day, I've written about 6000 words (shakes down to about 10 pages) in a day, but keeping that up for a week? Impressive.

I think it has to do with internal quality control.

Someone who can crank out 60 or 75 pages over a weekend is writing in a mental mode that is unconcerned with most - of not all - criteria of quality.

That's not bad, though. Not necessarily. It may well be a good strategy to write first and then think later. (I mean as a general approach to writing; I'm absolutely convinced it can be a good exercise to try a few times.)

Most of the rest of us, probably the majority, are at the other extreme. Too great a concern for quality, acting as an inhibting factor. Even if it means the revision process isn't insane.

The poster who said he could do 10 pages on a good day, but did not expect to be able to keep up that pace for an entire week... his approach may well be close to optimal.

Funny...even in high-speed mode, I don't get the idea that my quality suffers. My main problem is getting in that mode, which is fun but slightly exhausting, but once I'm there I get decent writing out of it. My revision process basically consists of reading it over for typos and pressing the spell-check button (I write Naruto fanfic, so I type with the spellcheck off because it's an epic pain adding every Japanese word and name in the dictionary). Of course, I have reason to believe that my sense for basic technical quality is greater than most, probably aided by the fact that I've been reading obsessively since I was 3.
