How will you deal with Rule 34

Self Explanatory, really. Given a read over of the Rule 34 – Creator Reactions, a lot of creators have had reactions to fans making odd pairings and porn of the characters. How will you handle it if your work gets published? Will you approve? Disapprove? Remember, this is just a question and food for thought.

Approve. If I don't "like" some fanart, then I won't get mad or anything, I just won't stare at it too long.

Though I will NEVER read fanfic. Just so I don't get in legal trouble.

I totally hate my avatar. Just saying.

Overall, I would consider it a good day — hey, I'm well known enough to get my own Rule 34! Besides, without going into details, let's just say it'd be a real circle-of-life kinda thing to bump into Rule 34 of my own work. That said, I'm wondering who'll get the Uke-stick: Sigmund, or his (straight) best friend Isaac. It'll be ugly either way.

I will approve of it too, I actually already had some done, by an old friend. It was kinky, weird and disturbing, but if its what he liked, then I have no reason to object.

[up] I am dealing with that too. Two of my new readers are Yaoi Fangirls, and both ship Matthew with Shuuji. I am glad I have readers, though. They mainly hit poor Matthew with the Uke-stick

Somebody once wanted to write a crossover using my own Nanoha work as the basis for their take on the Nanoha universe; particularly my take on the Wolkenritter. I essentially responded with "it's not like I can stop you, and it'd be damn stupid of me to try, so go ahead."

I think that adequately sums up my views regarding any form of fan effort I may ever deal with.

Generally, creators of published works are not allowed to look at fan-made pieces. This varies widely depending on the media (written fanfiction for a book is more strict than fanart or costumes for a book) and the place (the USA is much stricter than Japan).

So it won't be a problem.

I'd stay well away from it, but I'd find the idea of fans making it incredibly flattering.

I mean, when people find your characters sufficiently appealing to write porn about them, that's probably an indicator that you're doing something right.

I think I'd like that. Okay, some things would just squick me, but who cards? Randomly stumbling on them would be fun.

It would be awesome...! And disgusting...! >_<"

Yeah. Too be honest, I would be interested in hosting regular 'fan contests' on my blog or whatever, where fans can send in fanfiction or fanart with the prize being, I dunno, arranging with the fan to have it published as an actual *thing*. That is, as part of Canon. Yes, I'm being serious.

That said, all entrants would need to fill in a contract when they began where-by they hand over all rights to the fanfic in question. Otherwise, yeah, waaayyy to easy to get sued right there.

Bleh... I'd probably never read any of the fanfiction for a work of mine until I was sure I was done with sequels, etc. Then I wouldn't need to worry about the lawsuits...

I would probably try what Terry Pratchett apparently does: you can do whatever, but if it's a fanwork of something of mine, I own it, period...

I would never read fanwork (of whatever nature) based off my own works. Just so much easier on both me and the fans that way.

I'd be saddened and disturbed if nobody saw the potential. The setting is dripping with it.

As for writers not being allowed to read fan-works: Does that only apply to ongoing works? Because it seems silly if you've already finished the work.

I'd probably be thrilled. Even if it was an utterly squicky pairing/event, hey, if someone cares enough about my work to make it, I'm happy. For fanfic in general I would attempt to pay forward the favor people like Kishimoto and Rowling do for me in not making a fuss about fanwork.

In my story: Naomi is a runaway slave who escapes and is raised by her uncles Jack the Cossack Barbarian and Roger the Civilized thief.

If I ever get the story published, then squeeing fsn-girls will write Jack/Roger Fan Fic.

@Merlo: Oh, I'm not talking about the legal stuff. I just don't want to see what's been done with my characters. The fans can do whatever they feel like, but I'd rather not know about it.

I'll ask them not to sell, I'll discourage lolicon/shotacon, and I'll rejoice that my work is popular/attractive enough to have porn of it. That's all.

I'd enjoy it. People would ship the same pairings as they do with the original series, probably, anyway, so there would be (hopefully and thankfully) a derth of rabid Yaoi Fangirls. Yuri fangirls might be more common (I've got them now, actually, and I'm not sure what to do with them...). I'd enjoy the gorier things, but discourage lolicon and shotacon, with a few exceptions for certain people.

I'd just be happy people wanted to make Rule 34 of my work - I'd be dubious about fanfiction, though... Just...because it would be really fuckin' wierd...
