Manly Gay and Macho Camp both have the same two lines from Village People's "Macho Man" as its page quote, and neither has a Quotes Wiki page. Anyone got an idea for a better quote for Manly Gay (or Macho Camp, as the case may be)?

The Village People are a complicated case. They started out more legitimately Manly Gay, but became more Camp Gay over time, similarly to what happened to the Porn Stache for masculine men regardless of sexuality. Though I agree that the primary Manly Gay quote should be more contemporary to the audience. At the moment I can't think of any.

Bumping. Are there any quotes from the examples that might work?

[up]Good idea. I'm not familiar with the songs listed on the page, is anyone else?

Not to hijack this thread, but while we're on the subject, we may want to double-check some of the examples. Particularly from the video game section. Brad Evans is a rather ambiguous example, and Zangief seems to go back and forth on the issue depending on the writer. I haven't played enough Star Fox to really know if Wolf's sexuality was ever addressed, but I can't imagine where it would be.

I'm not sure the wiki's policies on including ambiguous examples on a page, but even if it's deemed that they SHOULD be here, at least the ambiguous examples should be noted as such.

As for the page quote, I think it may be easier to find a different quote for Macho Camp than for Manly Gay. I'm not familiar with most of the songs/singers, and even if I were, I can't imagine that any of them would be fitting for the page quote. While the Village People themselves did sort of become camp over time, the song's lyrics themselves are more appropriate for Manly Gay than they are for Macho Camp. At least, that specific line.

Perhaps a page quote for Macho Camp can be drawn from reviews of Cho Aniki? I noticed this:

"He reminds me of something straight out of the movie "Beastmaster". Still, I don't recall anybody in that flick pulling off crotch-exposing yoga stretches in mid air, nor do I recall any of them wearing pink armor..."

Eh. *shrug*

Brad Evans never seemed ambiguous in context. Wolf invokes tropes more familiar in Japan than elsewhere. I can't vouch for Zangief though — perhaps that should be double-checked.

I don't want to dwell on this particular topic, as it's deviating from the real purpose of the thread, but I'll just say this:

Having played Wild Arms 2 myself, I can say that the subject of Brad's sexuality is ambiguous at best. The game never makes specific reference to his sexuality, it only really says that he has an emotional attachment to Billy. Now, he could be gay, or they could just be Heterosexual Life-Partners. It's never clear, and I think outright saying that he (and Wolf) are Manly Gay for certain seems...dishonest and misleading. (That said, I'm told that this may be different in the Japanese translation. Having played the English, I can't say for certain, but I've heard two different opinions, one saying that it's obvious that he's gay in the Japanese and another saying that's untrue and that even in the Japanese it's ambiguous. As I don't speak or read Japanese, I can't help here, I'm only speaking from the perspective of an English speaker.)

Yes, the English translation had some alterations. Another gay character, Caina, was changed to female. Brad and Billy was more simply played down.

And Wolf hasn't had a specifically Have I Mentioned I Am Gay? moment, but he didn't have to — he invokes a series of blatant Japanese Manly Gay tropes, just as Leon invokes a series of blatant Camp Gay tropes, and Panther subverts the pattern by being a straight Dandy. (This started with Star Fox Assault, and was refined in Super Smash Bros Brawl.) This is only subjective where it is culturally more obscure — an issue I have tried to raise before at Subjective Trope, where subjectivity exists depending on an entire country rather than viewer by viewer. This is why it can be so important to know whether a trope is invoked.

The existing quote doesn't encapsulate the trope. The singer finds it attractive, and links it to physical attractiveness. That's not enough to go on. Ideally quotes work by themselves: the status of the band is neither here not there.

My mind, none of the Video Game examples have enough details to know if they are examples or not. In fact they don't have enough details to be cited as examples at all, particularly the first two.

I removed the quote, and can't think of a better one. If someone disagrees, perhaps it can go back. But it seemed the most practical solution to the problem for now.

Also, expanded some of the terse examples you mentioned.

Let's close this discussion. The quote at issue was removed with no ideas for a new one. There is no other activity here. The Trope Repair Shop has too many threads and some need to be closed.

Agreed.

I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.
