The image on Cutscene Power to the Max is not from an actual cutscene (it's from some webcomic again) and doesn't really illustrate anything: all the meaning is the text balloon. Show, Don't Tell.

Surely we can do better than this?

Akuma, moments before he punches an asteroid. Maybe the lower part could work.

^I would not recognize that as having any relation to video games at all.

Well, I guess I can give this a try.

From this vid of Final Fantasy X. Hopefully it doesn't need too much explanation, but they're basically grinding down anchor cables on their normal footwear to crash a wedding.

[up][up] True that -It is the ending of a game though... The point is, maybe I'm wrong, I think the image needs to show something "over the top"-ish in order to both be clear at first glance and cover the "power" part of the title, which is the thing that bugs me the most about the current pic.

I think we need an image from a cutscene and one from regular gameplay, to contrast them. This trope isn't "doing something cool in a cutscene", but "being clearly more powerful in a cutscene than in actual gameplay".

Personally I think the current image is fine. However, if people are going to insist on replacing it (something I don't support) you would need to do a split to show a big contrast between gameplay and cutscene, as just an impressive looking scene, outside of context, does not convey that they are any stronger in that scene or weaken elsewhere. This, incidentally, is why the current image is a good one, as by being explicit it doesn't need context.

And, also: Just like quotes don't need to be examples to be quoted, pictures don't need to actually be examples to demonstrate the quote.

Guess who, it's Kaosubaloo!

I'm cool with the current image.

This is weird. We are all acting like this is cutscene dissonance when it really is when someone is more powerful in a cutscene then in game.

Will anyone back me if I take this to TRS and ask whether cutscene dissonance goes here or is a separate trope?

Please.

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of any options thus far.

The suggested replacements are all probably worse than the current, but I'm not particularly fond of it either. I guess it's okay if we can't find better.

[up][up][up] I'm not sure what you mean. Cutscene Dissonance sounds like the supertrope of this one, and of its inverse Cutscene Incompetence.

Yeah, the cut was a little premature. Let's do this:

Motion to keep pic pulled

Doesn't demonstrate the trope.

I liked the previous image (it's probably the best we'll have for this), and the replacements weren't very good, so I'm against the motion to keep pulled. smile

It's better than no pic at all, if nothing, as it isn't completely bad. I'm not seeing any good raplacement coming up anytime soon, so we might as well keep it until something better is actually found.

I don't think the old picture adds anything. Voting to keep pulled.

The currant page picture demonstrates the trope well enough. Every picture doesn't have to be a literal demonstration to get the point across. Still, if we want to use something from an actual game, what about something from Ninja Gaiden?

Yeah, that seriously needs a pull. The suggested image doesn't really work because, unless I'm missing something, it doesn't show how the characters act outside of cutscenes.

I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!

I thought it's a decent lampshading. Not crazy about it, but I'm Keep Until Better Image Suggestion for this one.

Correct me if I'm missing something, but if the opposition is merely on the grounds of textophobia, I tend to disagree.

I think the Hiimdaisy one was alright. If we're really set on changing it, then how about something out of the opening cutscene from Devil May Cry 3 showing a comparison between normal gameplay Dante and cutscene Dante?

The Hiimdaisy pic is perfect, IMO.
