FWIW, we have the phrase "out of left field" over here, too, where most people don't even know how to play baseball.

[up] The saying "out of left field" is pretty common even if people don't know where it came from; it's also plain English. "Diabolus ex nihilo" is neither, and most Tropers cannot be assumed to speak Latin.

That's one of the cool things about language. Origin isn't important, only mimicry is necessary for proper use.
