Conan's follow-up has been canceled due to claims that it was "too ethnic". I'm not a fan of Lopez (other than his serious work, which isn't too bad) but his cancellation basically screams Unfortunate Implications.

Who wants to bet that Nick at Nite or TV Land gives him a show now?

TBS claimed that the ratings weren't high because of Lopez's ancestry and appeal to Hispanic audiences and forced him to make it more Anglo-themed. Which is not what Lopez's routine is.

This is easily one of the dumbest reasons to cancel a show.

Well let's see, you give an obviously Hispanic comedian with a Hispanic-centric act a TV show then bitch because it's too "ethnic." There's an idiot hiding somewhere in this equation.

I'm sure there will be people complaining that it's Conan's fault and he's done what Leno did to him. It's important to point out quickly that Lopez wanted Conan as a lead-in to try to save his own show.

Because the world's whitest comedian is definitely going to share fans with with a comic just slightly less ethnic than Carlos Mencia.

That actually screams racism. The ratings part of it, fine. That's a legitimate reason to cancel something. But being "too ethnic"? That seems really, really racist.

Blame the viewers, not the network. "Ethnic" is an ingredient you put in the show or leave out depending on what kind of appeal/demographics/ratings you want.

TBS wants mainstream appeal, which Lopez's strongly Hispanic show didn't provide.

Yeah I agree that "ethnic" shows shouldn't necessarily be canceled, but I think that is how it is usually. I mean unless it achieves real crossover appeal, it might not last. According to that article, the same thing happened to The Mo'Nique Show, which had a black female lead. But I am kind of surprised at that, because it was on BET.

When you're too black for BET, there's something horribly wrong.

As a mexican I find this the most hilarious fucking reason ever to get canceled.

Good riddance anyways, never liked Lopez.

I should point out that the "too ethnic" reason was a rumor, not the actual news report. If it was that would be quite a controversy.

In any case, there is a legitimate risk marketing-wise in appealing to a niche crowd that is too small to be worth anything. I imagine it's hard to make a Hispanic-based show appeal to a broad audience instead of a Hispanic-based show that only appeals to Hispanics.

There are exceptions, that's one of the reasons why there is a million cable channels out there because they appeal to a niche crowd.

I'm not sure the whole "too ethnic" comment was actually racist. I think what the person meant that it severely limited the show's potential demographic.

Besides, EVERY TV Network uses that kind of language behind closed doors in regards to demographics.

I dunno, ethnic programming can be entertaining as hell.

Lemme tell you, Telemundo is friggin' fun to watch when loaded on tequila. Even if I don't know what anyone is saying.

Lopez Tonight should've aimed for the Hispanic AND late-night drunk 21-30 crowd.

I get the idea from Stephen Colbert's Latin-American counterpart Esteban Colberto.

The "Too Ethnic" thing isn't racist. Lopez appealed largely to a single demographic. The network wanted someone who could appeal to a wider range of viewers to help generate more revenue. Lopez really only appealed to a single ethnicity so... too ethnic.

Didn't it run in the same timeslot as Daily Show / Colbert Report? Good luck beating either one.

It originally ran at 11, which would compete with both TDS and Colbert. Then it got pushed back an hour to make room for Conan.

Sounds like Conan did him a favor then.

Favor 1: asked TBS not to cancel Lopez to make room for him, so he wouldn't be "the guy that got Lopez fired"

Favor 2: one full season of lead-in from a popular late-night show.

Favor 3: took the brunt of Stewart/Colbert ratings competition

[up]If Conan was moved an hour later, I'd actually watch it. When it airs is the same time The Daily Show and The Colbert Report air, so I don't bother.

On another note, I've had a feeling that Lopez was overexposed. I used to like him and his material, but nowadays he's everywhere like he's the voice of Chicanos. He's not. Right now, he's only two steps above Carlos Mencia, and that's not a very good position to be in. I hope that Gabriel Iglesias learns form Lopez and stays away from politics.

[up] I hope so too. He's actually hilarious. I've been a fan of his for years. I'd really hate to see him go the way of Mencia and Lopez.

When I had cable, I DVRed Conan, TDS, and Colbert. If I was available, I'd watch Conan's monologue, flip to Colbert at 12:30, and watch Daily Show later.

Now that I don't have cable, I watch Daily Show on Hulu (sigh... to stay informed) and don't bother with the others.

English, I agree. Lopez has been overexposed. And he seems to only have material relating to being Mexican. His comedy is kind of a one trick pony.

Now Gabriel Iglesias? He's friggin' HILARIOUS.

I haven't watched any of Iglesias's material but from advertising, it seems like it's all fat jokes and nothing else.

And there seems to be a lot of other comedians who do that.

Hardly. Fat jokes make up probably less than half of his act. They're funny fat jokes, though.
