Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Huh. So here's that campaign video Isaiah Mustafa did to show Marvel he was interested in being Luke Cage. I hope he gets it.

The eye thing was odd, though.

The eye thing was odd, but I do think he should be pretty high on the list of actors for the role.

...This discussion has been over a while, I just skipped in from the ethnicity thing to say that I always saw Dr. Strange as hispanic. Particularly, since I have an auditory mind and I tend to give actor voices, I always heard something along the lines of Ricardo Montalban circa 1982.

I got the DVD. Just like Captain America, it's pretty bare bones. It only has a "Making of" special and commentary.

All the other juicy stuff, like the deleted scenes or Item 47, is on the Blu-Ray.

I got the combo pack with both just in case, even though I can't actually watch the Blu-Ray.

Item 47 is on the Blu-Ray? That's not fair.

You know... if you're not watching it, you could just send that Blu-Ray over to Chicago...

Still waiting for Avengers 2, where all the Stan Lee characters are revealed to be Skrull sleeper agents.

Also, too bad we missed a great chance for someone to play Doctor Strange[up][up]... Desi Arnaz.

[up]Tell me about it. So I'm going to list some Avengers, and see if you can guess who I'm talking about:

Long lived military genius and honorable man with peak physical condition and an indestructable weapon that thanks to his special talent, he and basically no one else can will to return to him.
Answer: Captain America Thor

Flight, super-strength and ability to shoot otherworldly energy.
Answer: Miss Marvel Thor

Super strength, battle lust, and an at times simple mind.
Answer: The Hulk Thor

Super strength, superhuman durability, and a skilled brawler
Answer: Luke Cage Thor

Skilled manipulator who at times uses feminine wiles to get what's wanted
Answer: Black Widow Loki

It seems like Fox is now trying to challenge the Marvel Studios film by bringing in Mark Millar as a consultant. He claims his job is to make sure the upcoming Marvel films done by Fox are the kinds fans want to see, which I'm taking as an indication that they'll try to make them truer to the comics (as much as that could possibly happen given the liberties already taken with the X-Men movies). http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/GraphicCity/news/?a=67948

Honestly as much as I dislike much of Millar's work hopefully this means we'll get a non-sucky Doctor Doom.

[up] Not a chance. Mark Millar is who we have to thank for the execrable Marquis of Death arc.

So I had a Blu-Ray player after all. Hooray! Who knew?

Anyways, I saw Item 47. Twas good. I was expecting it to be more tragic than it was: in particular I was expecting the boyfriend to die. It kind of seems like they were expecting that, as there were two fake outs (though I never believed the second one for a second), but it ended quite adorably.

I'm fully expecting our two Villain Protagonist turned SHIELD Agents to play a role in the upcoming SHIELD show.

The deleted scenes give quite a bit of supplemental information, including characterizations that will probably be important later and a few hints and and a confirmation of a few guesses I've seen here ore there.

You know what I just remembered? Libraries exist. And you can rent things from them. Even Blu Rays.

Actually, I'd been borrowing books, but remembered to get Avengers transferred here.

[up][up][up] With Coulson dead, I'd have to imagine Sitwell and his partner will be in the show as well. Scarlett Johannson, Samuel L. Jackson and Jeremy Renner are likely out of their price range anyway. Isn't How I Met Your Mother ending soon? Cobie Smulders could conceivably be on the SHIELD show since she doesn't really have a film career.

Since it's looking a bit less likely that we'll be getting a SHIELD movie with the show on the way, I really want to see the show do a "origins of SHIELD" arc set in the 60's, with an aging Phelps and the Howling Commandos taking on a resurgent HYDRA group led by either Zemo or Strucker, and in the aftermath decided to turn the Scientific Strategic Reserve into a more lasting government presence.

As for the present, Scorpio and the Zodiac would be an interesting Big Bad group. However, if the series is, as advertised, going to act as a hub for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would be a great place to bring aspects of other heroes' plots back into importance - for example, bringing back Justin Hammer so he could have his revenge.

Also, this is just a general MCU desire, but I really, really want Moses Magnum somewhere in either the films or the series. I've always thought his niche as an evil weapons designing genius would've made him a great foil for Tony, and would've wonderfully filled in the inevitable niche of having someone supply powerful weapons and technology matching the Avengers' might to various unsavory groups (especially since the main group to do such a thing, A.I.M., is more of a megalomaniacal organization - Magnum could have a more freelance role which could thus give explanation and setting for various films).

The Iron Man 3 trailer is dropping October 23rd: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=95484

And Scarlett Johansson is reportedly reprising her role as Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. http://www.deadline.com/2012/10/five-actresses-testing-for-captain-america-2-role-black-widow-might-drop-by-as-well/

Deadline seems to think they're casting for a love interest, but don't we already have an actress for Sharon Carter?

Sincere question: what other major characters might they be casting for? I don't know much about the Winter Soldier storyline, so I don't know if there are any characters important to that story they might be casting. We've been given hints that A.I.M. is majorly involved in the story, so it could be someone there - a quick search brings up this name as a major A.I.M. related character.

There's also the possibility of another S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, I suppose. Or even, given that they're going for a shared universe, a character who is more famously important to another mythos but appears here in a major way anyways.

Have any of you guys seen this?

It's a short film by Adam Levermore (a designer for stuff like Battlestar Galactica and Firefly). He did it because he wants a job on the SHIELD show and uses this to show his skills.

Plenty of great celebrity cameos also.

[up][up] There were rumors that Anna Kendrick would be playing Sharon but they were just that, rumors. So it could be the love interest they're talking about is Sharon and Kendrick is no longer available for the role.

As for who else it could be? I have no idea. Diamondback was a female villain that became Cap's love interest for a while but I don't think they'll be going with her. Sharon had a pretty big part in the original Winter Soldier story, being the love interest and obligatory Distressed Damsel as well.

Isn't it a little creepy for Cap to have a relationship with a descendent of the woman he loved before he was frozen? I get that it's from the comics, but as part of the movie audience who doesn't read the comics I find it more than a bit weird.

It could have been worse. I think the original stories implied Sharon looked almost exactly like Peggy. At least with a new actress there isn't the "You lost your one true love so here's an identical replacement as a consolation prize" squick factor.

I like the idea of Cap initially starting a relationship with Sharon, but then breaking it off when he realizes that he has a lot of issues and their relationship is largely built around a few of them. It could all be part of his coming to terms with time displaced nature.
