Yeah, I wonder if they want sue Blizzard for using the word Oblivion in one of their games
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/Oh, jeez. We're back to this crap again? Look, take a glance at that bigass post I made; it clearly details how Zenimax is in the right, and why you shouldn't be so quick to call Notch 'the good guy'. His trademark ends with him essentially owning the word "Scrolls", and putting Zenimax, which has a far more specific and fair trademark, in a position to get sued/lose their property. Notch's TM also jeopardizes that of many other companies, from clothing designers, to vehicle makers (I think) with more fair trademarks. This was bound to happen; I don't see why everyone's reserving a spot for their tongues on his arse.
And on top of that, they'd probably like the chance to get the lawsuit under their belt as show of proof of their defending their property.

Again, this is kinda bad for PR because it looks like the bigger, older company bullying the smaller, younger one.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelThat's Notch's fault; he made it public. Every other company knows that a trademark suing is par for the course, and deal with it in the background, but he had to go and put it out there, and cast himself as a martyr. If he'd not said anything, this probably wouldn't have ever turned into such a big thing.
Oh, Walter, I feel like I'm talking about a drug deal, or something.

That's because a bunch of people on the internet are impatient and tl;dr the articles and papers that prove that everything Zenimax is doing is perfectly legit and in the right.
"Seriously, don't eat the mermaid. And not just because it's half cannibalism." ~OtherarrowI dunno, pull the Average Joe off the street, ask him what'd he say if a company was being sued over a single word and he'd probably say that it's ridiculous.
(Unless it was a cuss word or slur, but that's not the issue.)

"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelAnd that's because your average Joe isn't running a company. And isn't familiar with trademark and copyright law. It's also why people don't normally put this kind of business into the public eye; the Average Joe sees it, and starts making uninformed decisions and statements.

Also, Notch did try a compromise, but Zenimax didn't really agree.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelAnd now the argument's come full circle: We're back to where we were just a few hours ago; Zenimax was certainly in the right until that happened. Now, we're not sure what they're suing for, but it's probably to get the lawsuit under their belt, so that they can use it as evidence of them defending their trademark later; they wouldn't waste money filing the lawsuit and flying out to Sweden just because.
And you've gotta realize that if Zenimax was trying to ruin Mojang, they'd have made them fly to the U.S. instead of going there themselves, and would have been far more beligerant about the whole deal.

So basically know one knows what the fuck right now.
But it's still dumb to support one side or the other without all the facts
"Seriously, don't eat the mermaid. And not just because it's half cannibalism." ~OtherarrowAh, fuck it.
Forget everything that I have said earlier, I just want Zeni to accept the whole Quake deal and I dont care really care about what side wins anymore...After all, its not like it is going to change anything at all , lol

"That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death itself may die."Okay, I can understand defending a brand, but what if Zenimax were to win the suit?
I mean, besides reaffirming the brand, obviously. What would Zenimax be asking for in terms of damages?

"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelExactly.
For all we know, Mojang employees flew over to Bethesda Softworks and beat them all up, and Zenimax are suing for the cost of their hospital bills.
EDIT: Didn't see that post... they really don't need to win, they just need the papertrail; think of it as filing for insurance: they're doing this now, so they don't regret it later, when someone infringes on their trademark and they need evidence that they've been protecting it.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I can't really see any gain to this on Zenimax's side, other than making sure Mojang doesn't get Scrolls trademarked
"Seriously, don't eat the mermaid. And not just because it's half cannibalism." ~OtherarrowYeah, since they are going to court, the best-case scenario is that Zenimax asks for little to no cash in return.
Anyways, speaking of one-word titles, it is amusing that most if not all games Zenimax owns the rights to have one-word titles or are referred to by one word: Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Brink, Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein...

That being said, they probably won't win, but they'll get what they need regardless.
That's because they never picked any infringing names. Also because saying the full titles of those games is a mouthful. Besides, their trademarks aren't as broad and sweeping as Notch's.

^I was just making an observation.
And with you want a mouthful, try Call Of Cthulhu Dark Corners Of The Earth.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelWalter Christ, that's ugly. But not as ugly as Nasty Sucker Bitches Brass Orchestra. Believe it or not, that's a song title.

I'd be pissed if I was being sued for something so stupid, too.
