Figured I'd do the justice and post it here.

Yeah, if you were waiting for that another game from Recettear's localizing team, then wait no longer.

http://www.carpefulgur.com/chantelise/

Demo avaiable now, release on Steam and Gamersgate (and elsewhere, wherever) next Friday.

Discuss.

That's nice. I've been hearing for a while that Chantelise was on their to-do list but actually seeing concrete plans is awesome.

I haven't been keeping up with this game, but Carpe Fulgur did well with Recettear, so we'll see what happens. I'm REALLY interested in Fortune Summoners though.

Just played a little bit of the demo.

I'll recommend binding the camera button to something else... or better yet use a gamepad. My hand hurts a lot now.

The camera is being a big problem for me.

If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.

Before I switched to a gamepad, I kept accidentally using magic when I meant to lock on to something. It was quite irritating.

Yeah, this is kind of a game you DON'T want to play with keyboard...or at least try to reassign the keys to your linking because the default Z X C V setting sucks. For refference, for games like this I'd use following setting: Z for button 1, X for button 2, S for button 3 and D for button 4. Camera rotation for Left and Right Shift. Simply because when I play something on PS 1 emulator, I always have buttons bound this way if I'm using keyboard (Z- Cross, X- Circle, S- Square and D- Triangle) so I got used to it.

I'm starting to think it might be a game I don't want to play with a keyboard or a gamepad, given that I can't seem to beat the first boss, and I'm sick to death of running through the whole dungeon to fight it again, painstakingly avoiding every single enemy, lest they rob me of my precious, not-replenished-by-starting-a-boss-fight hit points.

Pro-tip : buy Ferromin whenever you can. Try not to bother with equipment because if you've played Recettear, you'll know those are crap gear right off, trying to trick your pix

I have. I already bought four of them and found the one that's the Treasure in the first section of the Ruins, and I still don't have enough health to beat the boss. No matter what I do, I can't reliably dodge its attacks.

^Just get a leather glove and shield, or even two gloves (since you can equip more than one at the same time and still get power benefit of both), and just keep "hugging" the bastard and mash attack button. Sometimes his attacks will miss despite you being in Point Blank range of them. Also if you happen to kill slimes in the meantime, try to pick the spell gems since Magic deals some massive damage to Golem.

^^Bullcrap. To give you the perspective, barehanded I dealt like 7-9 damage to these slimes at first, with glove on I dealt 19-21. It makes a diffirence.

It's worth a try, I suppose.

I also can't figure out how to get the Treasure in the Cave immediately before the boss, but I have all the others up to that point figured out. (Except Tutorial 3, which I strongly suspect I can't get at this point in the game)

Alternate strategy: save up six fire/water/thunder gems from earlier in the dungeon, and use them to take off two thirds of the boss's health right at the start of the battle.

It's possible to get. ....and yeah, feels like getting that treasure in the cave is fucking impossible. There must be a clever way to uncover it but I haven't figured it out.

I know what do to; I don't know how to do it. Those grey slimes are immune to physical attacks and thunder magic, and I couldn't find enough fire and water to kill them all.

No, I'm mistaken. They just have very very high damage resistance to everything, so you can use any strong magic and a Focus Staff to kill them.

Why is everyone acting like it's the sequel to Recettear? As far as I understood, the two are only related by virtue of both being indie Japanese games localised by the same company.

Chantelise was a game EasyGameStation made before Recettear, so it probably has mostly the same set of developers, and the two games share a lot of art assets. They might also be set in the same universe, but don't quote me on that.

SD: They are set in the same universe. Remember when Griff was explaining the truth about fairies in Recettear? He made a comment about "humans turned onto fairies"; although Griff was likely speaking about it in general, for the devs at EGS, it was a direct reference to Chante's situation.

I do wonder what's up with Japanese indie games almost always avoiding the mouse like the plague. If I could control the camera with the mouse (and assign at least a couple of actions to the mouse buttons), this game would control significantly better.

and that's how Equestria was made!

^No offense, but why would you want to use mouse with game like that anyway? You want to move with WSAD, attack with Left Click, cast with Right Click and jump/lock-on with extra buttons? Well, doesn't sound convenient to me, but whatever works I guess. That kind of game is some sort of thing you usually see on consoles, therefore Gamepad is the most convenient solution.

As a side note: EGS's next game, Territoire, is a turn based strategy and it does use Mouse.

I know how to beat the first boss this morning. Do you?

First, you can only stock up to 6 magic stones, right? The ones furthest to the left are used first. Try and get two yellow stones for that, then all the blue you can find. Two yellow stones cast into a pretty long lasting armor spell which cuts down damage a lot

Second, wherever you passed out, you can go back in from the beginning. For example, if you're KO'd at the boss, just choose Story Mode, and waltz right in. Unbarriered exits stay unbarriered. This way you can avoid a lot of enemy bullcrap, which also explains why there are barrels stocked with blue crystals

Finally, how to dodge. The boss pattern is fairly predictable, but I can feel you on the jump and pound attack which puts Yoshi to shame. This is optional, but pay attention to the damn magic stone drops. You do NOT want to pick up the wrong set of stones at the wrong time

First, just stay up close, and hack away. Use any offensive magic right off. The faster you kill this Golem the better. When it raises the right hand, you dodge (hit and jump button pressed together) to where the left waist is, and vice versa. After a couple of punches, it will do a spinning whirl, so before that happens, get the frick away. Then you have to save your magic : it's gonna jump

If you're like me, using fixed camera, you'll lose track of the surroundings and end up getting bagged. Don't worry, I solved this all on my own. BEFORE it's gonna jump, it has done the spinning whirl. So after it does just that, run straight away from him. If you're like me using fixed camera at its direction, just run towards your camera. If it doesn't jump the second time it's just gonna pound on the ground like the first pattern

Repeat this and boom

Oh, and one more thing. Chantelise takes place and was made before Recettear, and the two of them along with Territoire are in the same world. We still have no idea how large the planet is, but we know that both Chantelise and Recettear have crazy dialogues. Gonna take some time getting used to a boisterous and bragful fairy though, because I liked Tear and how she deals with stuff
