Mary is also pretty important (even if Holmes threw her off a train).

When your main two protagonists and main two antagonists are all adapted from 19th Century British adventure stories, that's kind of inevitable.

There was a rather uncomfotorable scene in the stories where Sherlock and Watson both take disdanful shots at woman's suffrage.

That was most definitely a product of its time, although Watson was always polite to women, and even Holmes at his most insufferable never showed open disdain towards a woman.
