Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Now for some not so good news.
President Proposes $2.55 Billion FY 18 Budget for National Park Service.
This disturbs me, because this is actually a budget cut, they're dressing up like an improvement.

Eh, he's cutting just about everything but military spending. This is not a surprise, nor is it even the worst part of his awful budget proposal.
Disgusted, but not surprisedAnd even there, he is cutting benefits for veterans and serving military-par for course.
Look at that picture. Nobody wants to be there except for the Donald.
Of course Donald wants to be there. There's cameras.
The women look like they're in mourning.
His Holiness looks so done with this shit.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."I have never seen Pope Francis so pissed in my entire life.
"All you Fascists bound to lose.""Using all my charges of Smite Evil on the Mafia may have been a mistake."
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Well, there was the time when he fought with the mayor of Buenos Aires (our current president) for allowing gay people to marry*. Francis was very angry then.
- not exactly legalizing gay marriage (that happened nationwide the year after), but basically thanks to a judicial loophole in the city of Buenos Aires' laws, gay people were allowed to marry by judge order if the government of the city didn't fight it in court, and the now-president gave the order to not fight those appeals (effectively allowing homosexual marriage).

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVExpect Trump to parrot the Pope's advice and positions for all of two weeks before someone else impresses him.

Well, there's probably not a lot of colors that are considered "ok" to be meeting the pope in?? I'm not exactly up on the protocol of meeting with the head of one of the oldest religious organizations in the world.
And I'm pretty sure Pope Francis would have a lot to say. Not even about the gay marriage thing, about Trump's remarkably uncharitable behavior in general. Sadly, it will probably make Trump's heart grow three sizes. Plus, the oft remarked observation that Trump basically listen to the last person in the room, and the pope generally isn't that guy.
I think wearing black is the standard protocol for meeting the Pope. There might be exceptions for Queens of Catholic countries who gets to wear white.
4 days, tops. I refuse to believe his attention span extends beyond that outside lining his pockets.
Oh he'll take the Pope's advice to heart. For like a week. Remember when he met with Obama, and starred parroting his talking points for like a day or two?

Yeah, Pope Francis isn't going to leave any long-lasting positive effect on Trump.
Expect Trump's approval rating to rise anyway because the Pope didn't try to to exorcise him on the spot.
Disgusted, but not surprisedlike Rationalinsanity said, he used all his Smite Evils on the media.
The GOP's strategy to win the special elections and the midterms? Point the finger at Pelosi again.
Now that "Thanks Obama" and "But Hillary" are out of date, they are going back to painting all Democratic candidates as Pelosi pawns again. They are counting on the GOP base's fear of Pelosi's "San Francisco liberal values".

Disgusted, but not surprisedI mean, she has been there for a while. Could be time for newer blood.
But the GOP would go after any prominent Dem. But I'm not sure that playing up her social liberalism will rally the base, and it might backfire with swing voters.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I'm more inclined to think they're looking to twist the knife in the schism between the left and center-left wings of the party. I expect a fair amount of red-baiting targeted at the center leaning elements of the party to crop up as well.
We've seen that playing up the divisions between factions of the Democratic Party has been successful in the past. Why stop a winning strategy?
Corollary: it would be nice if the American Left stopped doing the Republicans' dirty work for them.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@Rationalinsanity
Maybe getting new blood would be a good idea...which is why the Sanders' supporters decided a racist and out of touch 71 year old white guy was the perfect candidate to primary Pelosi.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAre they still considered "Sanders Supporters"? It seems like they've gained more prominence than the man himself at this point.
True, it might be The Artifact at this point.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI still laugh at people who call House Dems status quo, especially Pelosi.
FFS, the House passed Obamacare WITH the public option....with dozens of Centrists who voted for it too.
New Survey coming this weekend!
I also want them to win for the more immediate practical benefits. If/when the AHCA gets sent back to the House for a vote, it would definitely help to have a few more Democratic Reps.
Disgusted, but not surprised
