Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes, I know. Doesn't stop me from having the urge when I see these articles, though.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"This shit is like holding a hearing about wiretapping's negative impact on the US without inviting the NSA.
What's even better is that the sole person called to testify by the Democrats pointed out the myriad ways "politically-driven science" has proven beneficial in the past, and rather than countering "Nope, Science doesn't do that" admitted that there may very well be flaws in the system, but that has an internal counter in the form of peer-review.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Interestingly, it seems as if the cartoon contest was being held by an anti-Islamic U.S. hate group. What happens when haters attack haters? I don't think that the contest holders can claim the same satire protection as, say, Charlie Hebdo. But is that a line we're willing to draw? It seems that it should never be okay to attack speech with violence no matter how hateful that speech may be. On the other hand, I can't bring myself to feel sorry for them, specifically.
Vote for anti-science nutjobs, get nutjob anti-science hearings. Seems logical.
CNN says that Mike Huckabee is running for President. There is no article link but rather a live feed. I'm sure articles will be going up soon.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The anti-Muslim haters have gotten evidence to bolster their side. The attackers gave them some of what they want.
I'm up for joining Discord servers! PM me if you know any good ones!I agree that it's stupid and counterproductive, but I cannot bring myself to personally sympathize with the victims. My tolerance doesn't extend that far. If someone bombed the WBC, I'd want them arrested and prosecuted on the basis of maintaining a civil society, but I would not mourn the dead.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"(Another reason to avoid using acronyms.)
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Wow. I never saw that one coming from Texas.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesNow Texas needs to pass a law allowing churches who wish to perform gay marriages to be allowed to do so.
Waiting...
I'm up for joining Discord servers! PM me if you know any good ones!New York times suggests putting John Ross on the 20 dollar bill I found this to be one of the more reasonable articles on the topic. The author points out that like it or not, Jackson and the 20 represent an important era in US history, and he did champion the right of the common man to participate in the democratic process. The author goes on to suggest that we should make Jackson and Ross share the 20. He also says it would be a good idea to force other more "traditional" figures to share their places on the currency with less well known figures from marginalized groups. For example, Lincoln and Douglass could share the five, or Grant and Harriet Beacher Stowe.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.I'm sure they won't complain.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I am more or less indifferent to the faces on my money as long as they aren't horrible gits like David Duke.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And Chuck Norris is getting in on the Jade Helm rumors.
It seems conspiracy kool-aid has been a part of his Bad Ass regimen for a while...
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Wouldn't be it less controversial if they just used iconic landmarks and symbols instead?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Remember when Chuck Norris released a terrible political ad claiming that reelecting Obama would bring about "a thousand days of darkness" or some such?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Anyone who takes Norris seriously hasn't been paying attention, or is WAY too susceptible to internet memes.
Well, a presidential term is more than a thousand days. Maybe he just really, really hasn't liked it.
Obama leading us into less than 3 years or so of darkness? I can see that.
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"Seeing how half a day is night time, then 1000 days of darkness is kinda correct, if you round up.
I thought he said a thousand YEARS of darkness...
Chuck Norris hates gay people; ergo, I strongly dislike him.
Another green world.Texas has banned fracking bans.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I thought democratic ideals required that decisions be made as close to the people as possible. Isn't that the definition of liberty according to Republicans? All it takes is some oil money to make them abandon that, it seems. Nice job standing up for your principles, guys.
I'm being a bit sarcastic here; we always knew that the GOP machine responds to big business way more than it ever does the people, but rarely is it so stark.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
It's the exact same response that leads to people burning the American flag and chanting "death to America", in fact that's pretty much what you'd be doing. You'd be taking one small group of exstreamists overacting to something an asshole did as representative of an entire group that you then go on to deliberately offend out of spite.
